Identify windows.media.streaming.ps.dll
Microsoft lists this file in the Microsoft-Windows-Media-Streaming package. Its file description is DLNA Proxy-Stub DLL, meaning it supports the interfaces Windows uses for media and DLNA streaming rather than acting as a standalone application.

The normal native path is:
%windir%System32windows.media.streaming.ps.dll
On 64-bit Windows, System32 contains native 64-bit system files. Windows handles 32-bit equivalents through SysWOW64. Do not move a file between these folders simply because the error appeared in a 32-bit or 64-bit program.

The filename alone cannot identify which program triggered the failure. If Windows works normally and only one older application fails, that application may be damaged, incompatible, or loading the Windows component incorrectly.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
An incomplete update or pending component repair can leave a protected Windows DLL unavailable.
- Open Start > Settings.
- In Windows 11, select Windows Update. In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Start the affected program again.
If the error remains, continue with component repair. Do not search for a replacement file yet.

This is the most appropriate repair when the file is missing, corrupted, or present but rejected by Windows.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the operation to finish. It can remain at one percentage for a while.
- Leave the administrator Command Prompt open.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, which provides the source files used by System File Checker.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent, then restart Windows and test the program.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If the affected application now starts, the Windows component was the problem.

If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them:
- Run DISM again.
- Restart Windows.
- Run
sfc /scannowagain. - Review
%windir%LogsCBSCBS.logif the failure continues.
If DISM cannot obtain repair files from Windows Update, use a legitimate Windows installation source matching the installed edition and build:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows only with the actual path to that matching repair source.
Repeating SFC and DISM manually can make it difficult to tell what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can provide a free scan showing what needs attention; repair actions are performed by the full version, and it is not required when Windows servicing resolves the problem.

Fix 3: Install the Media Feature Pack on Windows N
Windows N editions omit certain media technologies. The Media Feature Pack restores those technologies, so it is relevant when media components are absent rather than merely corrupted.
Windows 11 N
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Optional features.
- Select View features next to Add an optional feature.
- Search for Media Feature Pack.
- Select it, choose Next, and then Add.
- Restart Windows when prompted.
- Test the affected application.
Windows 10 N
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Choose Optional features.
- Select Add a feature.
- Select Media Feature Pack, install it, and restart Windows.
- Open the program again.
Microsoft notes that some features may also require hardware-driver reinstallation after installing the pack. The Media Feature Pack is not a universal fix for every Windows edition. If your system is not an N edition, finish DISM and SFC first.
Fix 4: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If the error occurs in only one game or program, repair that application after repairing Windows.
First, use the program’s own launcher:
- Open the launcher.
- Select the affected game or application.
- Open its Settings, Manage, or Properties menu.
- Choose Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of files.
- Wait for the check to finish.
- Restart the application.

- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Apps > Apps & features.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu and select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program. Use Reset only if Repair does not help and you understand that it may remove the application’s local data.
For a traditional desktop program, download its installer only from the application developer’s official source, uninstall the damaged installation, restart Windows, and install it again. Do not copy windows.media.streaming.ps.dll into the program folder as a substitute for a damaged installation.
If Windows applications work but one old program continues to fail, check for an updated version or compatibility guidance from that program’s developer. The filename does not establish that a particular game or installer is uniquely responsible.
Fix 5: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a system file, although a missing file does not by itself prove a false positive or malware infection.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it and select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the DLL or for the affected application.
- Expand a detection to inspect its path, threat name, and available actions.
Only restore or allow the file when its location, origin, and Microsoft digital signature are trustworthy. If the file was restored but disappears again, run a full malware scan and investigate the security product’s logs. Repeated disappearance can also indicate storage problems or an unauthorized system-cleaning utility.

A 32-bit application cannot load a 64-bit DLL, and a 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit substitute. Check the program’s architecture and avoid choosing a file based only on its version number.
For a driver-related media failure:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, and Network adapters.
- Right-click the relevant device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
If Windows recently installed a faulty driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when that option is available. Do not replace windows.media.streaming.ps.dll because of an unrelated graphics, audio, or network driver error.

On supported Windows 11 installations:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings.
If the problem began after a recent change:
- Open Start and search for Recovery.
- Select Open System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the failure.
- Review the affected programs and complete the restore.
Back up important files first. If recovery still fails, perform an in-place repair installation using official Windows installation media and select Keep personal files and apps when offered.

Do not download a loose DLL
Random DLL download sites websites may provide malware, an unsigned file, the wrong Windows build, or the wrong architecture. A copied file can also hide the real component-store problem and create version conflicts.
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, the official Media Feature Pack for Windows N, or the affected application’s official installer instead.
Do not copy a replacement into System32
The correct path is %windir%System32, but that does not mean manually copying a DLL there is a safe repair. Windows servicing must restore the version that matches the system’s component store and architecture.
Do not use regsvr32 routinely
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. windows.media.streaming.ps.dll is a Windows proxy-stub component, not a typical third-party ActiveX control.

regsvr32 Windows.Media.Streaming.ps.dll
If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that confirms the command is inappropriate. It does not mean you need another downloaded copy.
Do not start with Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET
Those are separate dependency families. Reinstall them only when the complete error identifies a missing file from one of those runtimes. They do not normally restore a Windows media package file.

Back up your files, inspect CBS repair logs, run malware and storage checks, try System Restore when appropriate, and use Windows recovery or an in-place repair installation.
