Windows Update can also supply a printer driver. Open Settings > Windows Update, install available updates, then return to Printers & scanners and choose Add device. If Windows does not find a suitable driver, use Canon’s model-specific package instead.
Manually hunting through old driver packages and guessing which of several installed drivers is stale can take longer than the repair itself. Public records identify this particular file as 32-bit. That does not mean it belongs in C:WindowsSystem32, nor does copying it into SysWOW64 repair a Canon installation. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit Canon component can legitimately use a 32-bit DLL through Windows’ file-system redirection rules.
Check the Canon installer and printer model rather than trying to force the file into a system directory:

- Check System type.
- Download the driver explicitly listed for that Windows version and printer model.
- Remove the old Canon package before installing a different architecture or driver generation.

Never substitute a DLL from another Canon printer generation. Different packages can have different dependencies even when their filenames look similar.
Repair Windows components only when Windows itself is damaged
Fix 4: Run DISM, then System File Checker
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
cnbdr4_5.dll is third-party driver code, so SFC is not guaranteed to restore it. These commands are useful when the driver failure occurred alongside damaged Windows components, broken servicing, or other system-file errors.

DISM repairs the Windows component store first, which is why it should precede SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test the printer. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Canon driver installation rather than assuming SFC can supply this DLL.

Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer, commonly COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified evidence that cnbdr4_5.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbdr4_5.dll
A registration error does not repair a missing printer driver. It can also distract from the actual problem, which may be a missing dependency or incomplete Canon installation.
Why copying the file is unsafe

Understand the exact error message
The wording helps, but it does not identify the root cause by itself.
