What is hpomon05.dll
Available archival metadata identifies hpomon05.dll as the Status Monitor for an HP DeskJet Printing System for Windows. That metadata associates it with Hewlett-Packard and reports an old version, a small file size, and a 32-bit Win32 DLL. The file likely belonged in an old HP printer-driver directory. A historical report placed it beneath a path resembling:

That path is consistent with a legacy 32-bit printer driver package. It does not prove that every file found there is safe.
No authoritative public mapping confirms the exact DeskJet models that shipped this DLL. Identify the printer and the program calling the file before attempting a repair.
Why the error appears now
The usual causes are:
- An old HP printer installation is incomplete or damaged.
- Windows removed the printer driver while an HP utility or spooler entry remained.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
hpomon05.dllor the HP printer software. - Expand the detection and review the file path and detection name.
Do not restore the file merely because an HP program needs it. Restore it only when all of these are true:
- The file is in the expected HP printer installation directory.
- You still use the associated printer.
- The HP installation is known and legitimate.
- Your security product indicates that the detection was a false positive.
Reinstalling the complete HP package is safer than restoring an isolated quarantined DLL. If the file was found in a strange directory or has a suspicious detection, leave it quarantined and run a full scan.
Step 3: Reinstall the HP printer software
Use this path when the printer is still needed.
- Find the exact printer model from the label on the printer or from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Open HP’s official Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Search for the exact model.
- Select your Windows version when prompted.

Success means the HP utility opens without the DLL error and Windows can print a test page. If basic printing works but the old Status Monitor still fails, the printer may be supported only through a basic driver on current Windows. The status-monitor utility itself may no longer be compatible.
If HP does not offer software for the model, add the printer through Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device. Windows may provide an in-box driver. That can restore printing without restoring the old monitoring utility.
When manually hunting through old driver packages, it is easy to choose the wrong architecture or repeat the same failed installation. Step 4: Remove the obsolete HP printer and driver

Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the old HP printer.
- Select Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Remove the old driver package
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type:
printui /s /t2
- Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the obsolete HP driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart the computer.
If the package cannot be removed because it is in use:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Stop.
- Remove the driver through Print Server Properties.
- Return to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.
- Restart Windows.
If the message appeared only at startup, also check Task Manager → Startup apps and Task Scheduler for an obsolete HP monitor. Disable or remove the entry only when it clearly belongs to the unused printer.

Step 5: Repair the printer entry through Device Manager
Device Manager can help when Windows still has a broken printer-driver reference.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the old HP device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the relevant entry and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are removing the obsolete printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the printer and install the supported driver again.
Do not uninstall unrelated USB or printer devices simply because they look generic. Confirm the HP model first.
Step 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also failing
SFC and DISM do not normally recreate a third-party HP DLL. Use them when Windows has broader symptoms, such as damaged system components, repeated servicing errors, or several built-in features failing.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows system files. They may repair Windows components involved in printing, but they should not be expected to supply hpomon05.dll.

Architecture and dependency checks
Archival metadata identifies the known file as a 32-bit Win32 DLL. Do not replace it with an arbitrary 64-bit file. On 64-bit Windows, a 32-bit legacy printer component may still work, but the entire driver package must support the printer and operating system.
Check the application or driver that calls the DLL, not just the Windows edition. A 32-bit HP utility needs its expected 32-bit dependencies. Installing a file from another package can create a version conflict.

- Reinstall the complete HP package.
- Check whether the installer reports a missing runtime or dependency.
- Avoid moving the DLL between folders.
- Do not add it to a system directory as a workaround.
Why regsvr32 is usually wrong here
regsvr32 is for DLLs that specifically support self-registration, commonly certain COM or ActiveX components. It is not a general missing-DLL repair command.
There is no verified evidence that hpomon05.dll requires COM registration. Running a command such as this is therefore not a routine fix:
regsvr32 hpomon05.dll
If the DLL does not export DllRegisterServer, Windows will report that the entry point was not found. Reinstall the HP printer software instead.
