cnbic4_1.dll Missing: Diagnose Canon Driver Errors on Windows

cnbic4_1.dll is a Canon printer-driver component, not a normal Windows system file. If Windows says it is missing or cannot load it, identify the affected Canon printer and reinstall its official Windows driver or MP Drivers package before trying manual DLL fixes.

What this file actually does

cnbic4_1.dll is associated with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver software. It is used by the Canon driver installation that added it to Windows, so the error may appear when you print, scan, install Canon software, or start Windows and an old Canon component loads automatically.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Canon’s driver packages use names including Printer Driver, MP Drivers, ScanGear, and Canon IJ Driver Installer. On supported multifunction printers, MP Drivers contain both the printer driver and ScanGear.

This file is not established as:

  • A protected Windows component
  • A Microsoft Visual C++ runtime
  • A DirectX file
  • A .NET component
  • A game or general-purpose application library

Public file inventories describe cnbic4_1.dll as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver file associated with CANON INC. However, the available records disagree about architecture and other technical metadata. Some report a 32-bit copy, while another listing describes a 64-bit copy. Reported versions, sizes, hashes, and locations also vary.

That means you should not treat one online version, checksum, or folder path as universally correct. The correct copy is the one installed by the Canon package for your printer and Windows configuration.

Causes by symptom

What you see Most likely cause Best first action
Error appears while printing Damaged or incomplete Canon driver Remove and reinstall the printer driver
Error appears while scanning Missing ScanGear or MP Drivers component Install the complete Canon MP Drivers package
Error appears during Canon setup Wrong package, interrupted installation, or old driver conflict Uninstall the old Canon package, then run the correct installer
Error appears at Windows startup Obsolete Canon startup entry or driver leftover Remove unused Canon software and printer entries
“The specified module could not be found” while the file exists Missing dependency or damaged driver installation Reinstall the complete package rather than copying the DLL
Windows Security quarantined the file Security software removed a driver component Verify its origin before considering restoration
Error started after a Windows or driver change Compatibility problem or damaged installation Reinstall or roll back the printer driver
Only a legacy printer is affected Canon may no longer provide a current package Try Canon’s newest compatible package or Windows’ built-in printer driver

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon driver

This is the most likely solution because the error normally comes from a broken Canon printer installation rather than from Windows itself.

Identify the exact printer model

  1. Look at the printer’s front or rear label.
  2. If the printer is still installed, press Windows key + I.
  3. Select Bluetooth & devices on Windows 11, or Devices on Windows 10.
  4. Select Printers & scanners.
  5. Note the complete Canon model name and number.
  6. If several Canon printers appear, disconnect or power off the unused devices temporarily so you repair the correct one.

Do not select a driver based only on the word “Canon” or on a similar model number. Printer families can require different installers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Download the official package

  1. Open Canon’s official support site manually.
  2. Search for the exact printer model.
  3. Select Drivers & Downloads or the equivalent support section.
  4. Choose your Windows version and the architecture offered for that model.
  5. Download the Printer Driver, MP Drivers, or model-specific Canon installer.
  6. If the printer scans, prefer the package that includes ScanGear or the complete multifunction-driver package.

Avoid downloading cnbic4_1.dll by itself. A complete installer supplies related files, dependencies, configuration entries, services, and the correct architecture together.

Remove the damaged package

If the Canon installer says an older driver is already present or setup repeatedly fails:

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
  3. Find an entry such as Canon XXX MP Drivers or the Canon printer-driver entry.
  4. Select it and choose Uninstall.
  5. Follow the removal wizard.
  6. Restart Windows.

Then remove the old printer entry:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
  3. Select the affected Canon printer.
  4. Choose Remove.
  5. Confirm the removal.

On Windows 10, open Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners, select the printer, and choose Remove device.

Install the replacement

  1. Close printing and scanning applications.
  2. Right-click the Canon installer and select Run as administrator.
  3. Accept the license terms.
  4. Follow the connection instructions for USB or network setup.
  5. Allow the installer to complete all components.
  6. Restart Windows if requested.
  7. Print a test page from Printers & scanners.

The repair worked if the error no longer appears and printing or scanning completes normally. If the installer fails again, disconnect the USB cable, restart Windows, and run the installer with the printer disconnected until setup asks you to connect it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For users who regularly have to identify outdated hardware packages manually, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and show what needs attention; its full-version repair installs drivers, while the free scan is for identifying issues. It does not replace the need to use Canon’s model-specific package when that package is available.

Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine

Windows Security or another antivirus program may have removed a Canon component. Do not immediately restore it, because a quarantined file should first be traced to a legitimate Canon installation.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Windows Security and open it.
  3. Select Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Look for an entry involving cnbic4_1.dll, Canon software, or the affected printer driver.
  6. Open the entry and review its path, detection name, and action.

If the file came from the Canon installer or a Canon driver directory and you have verified its origin, follow Microsoft’s available restore or allow instructions. Scan the device first and reinstall the complete Canon package afterward if possible.

If Windows Security repeatedly quarantines the file, leave it quarantined until its origin and signature are verified. Repeated detections can indicate a corrupted or altered file, not merely a harmless missing-DLL problem.

Fix 3: Repair the Canon driver through Device Manager

Device Manager can remove and rebuild a printer driver, although Canon’s own complete installer is usually better because it can include scanning components.

  1. Right-click Start.
  2. Select Device Manager.
  3. Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Imaging devices.
  4. Right-click the affected Canon device.
  5. Select Uninstall device.
  6. If Windows shows an option to remove the driver package, select it only when you are certain this is the obsolete Canon driver.
  7. Select Uninstall.
  8. Restart Windows.
  9. Install the Canon driver package you downloaded for the exact model.

If the device reappears with a generic driver, printing may work but scanning or Canon-specific features may not. Install Canon’s full package rather than relying on the generic entry.

For a driver that began failing immediately after an update:

  1. Open Device Manager.
  2. Right-click the Canon device and select Properties.
  3. Open the Driver tab.
  4. Select Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
  5. Restart Windows and test the printer.

A rollback is appropriate only when the previous driver was working and the failure clearly followed an update.

Fix 4: Check whether the named DLL or a dependency is missing

“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean the named file is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency that cnbic4_1.dll needs.

Check the actual file without downloading a replacement:

  1. Open File Explorer.
  2. Search the Canon installation folders and the Windows driver store for cnbic4_1.dll.
  3. Right-click any matching file and select Properties.
  4. Check the Details and Digital Signatures tabs when available.
  5. Compare its location with the Canon installation that owns the printer.

Do not assume it belongs directly in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. A reported historical location is within a Canon DriverStoreFileRepository directory, but locations are package-dependent and not universal.

If the file exists but the error remains, reinstall the entire Canon driver. Replacing only the visible DLL leaves dependencies and driver-store registration untouched.

Fix 5: Run DISM and System File Checker

DISM and SFC are secondary repairs here. cnbic4_1.dll is associated with Canon driver software, not established as a protected Windows file, so these commands may not restore it. They are useful when other Windows components are also malfunctioning.

First install pending updates:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install available updates.
  5. Restart Windows.

Then run the repairs:

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
  4. Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
  1. Wait for it to finish.
  2. Then run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Restart Windows when both commands finish.
  2. Test the Canon printer again.

If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, test Windows and then reinstall the Canon package if the DLL error remains. If both commands complete without fixing the message, stop repeating them and return to the model-specific driver installation.

For users who want an automated check instead of repeatedly running repair commands without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can identify Windows issues through its free scan; repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon driver that owns this file.

Fix 6: Do not use regsvr32 as a default repair

regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose command for replacing missing or damaged DLL files.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no verified evidence that cnbic4_1.dll is a self-registering COM or ActiveX component. Running:

regsvr32 cnbic4_1.dll

is therefore not a normal fix. If it reports that DllRegisterServer is missing, that result is expected for a DLL that is not designed for manual registration. Reinstall the Canon package instead.

Do not use Windows Features to install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because a generic DLL article recommends them. No established evidence connects those runtimes specifically to this Canon driver component.

Fix 7: Handle old or unsupported Canon printers

If Canon no longer lists a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 package for the model:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Search Canon Support using the exact model number.
  2. Download the newest driver Canon provides for the closest supported Windows version.
  3. Remove the old Canon package before installing it.
  4. Run the installer in its normal compatibility mode first.
  5. If the installer refuses to run, right-click it, select Properties → Compatibility, and test the Windows version recommended by Canon’s documentation.
  6. Check Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners → Add device to see whether Windows offers a built-in driver.

Compatibility is model-specific and cannot be guaranteed. If printing works with a built-in driver but scanning does not, the missing ScanGear component may no longer be available for that printer.

Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change

Use System Restore only when the problem began after a driver, application, or Windows change and a suitable restore point exists.

  6. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  7. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  8. Let Windows restart and test the printer.

Back up important data before using recovery options. System Restore may remove a recent driver or application, but it does not guarantee that an unsupported Canon package will become compatible.

Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe

Do not download cnbic4_1.dll from a random DLL site and copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. That approach can introduce malware, use the wrong architecture, mismatch the printer’s driver generation, and leave the real dependency or driver-store problem unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The safe source is the official Canon support page for the exact printer model. Windows Update and Windows’ built-in printer driver are safer fallback sources when Canon no longer provides a suitable package.

FAQ

Is cnbic4_1.dll a genuine Windows file?

No. It is associated with Canon inkjet-printer driver software, not a standard Windows component. A legitimate copy should be traced to a Canon installation rather than accepted solely because its filename looks familiar.

Which Canon models use it?

No verified Canon source identifies the exact printer models or one universal installer containing this file. The association with Canon driver packages is strong, but the model and package relationship must be confirmed from the affected printer’s installation.

Is it 32-bit or 64-bit?

Public records conflict. Some report a 32-bit copy and another describes a 64-bit copy. Use the architecture supplied by Canon for the printer and Windows version instead of substituting a downloaded DLL.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Where should it be located?

There is no universal location. A historical report places it inside a Canon DriverStoreFileRepository directory. Do not move it manually to System32 or SysWOW64.

Can SFC restore it?

Usually not as a primary repair, because this file is not established as a protected Windows file. Run DISM and SFC when Windows itself is damaged, but reinstall the Canon driver to restore Canon-owned components.

Why does the error say the module is missing when the file is visible?

The named DLL may be present while one of its dependencies is missing, incompatible, or damaged. Reinstalling the complete Canon package repairs the surrounding files and configuration together.

What if I no longer use a Canon printer?

Remove the obsolete Canon software through Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, then remove unused Canon printers from Printers & scanners. If the message continues at startup, inspect Canon-related startup entries or scheduled tasks and remove only entries clearly tied to the unused installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Should I restore the file from quarantine?

Only after confirming that it came from a legitimate Canon installation and scanning the system. If its origin is uncertain or Windows Security repeatedly detects it, leave it quarantined and reinstall the driver from Canon.
