kbdiulat.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout component, not a Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET runtime. If Windows reports that kbdiulat.dll is missing or could not be loaded, repair Windows or the related keyboard layout rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
kbdiulat.dll provides the Inuktitut – Latin keyboard layout. Microsoft identifies that layout with the iu-Latn language code and keyboard layout ID 0000085D in its official keyboard documentation.

Windows loads keyboard-layout DLLs through its input and window subsystems when the corresponding layout is installed, selected, or referenced during sign-in. Microsoft describes this architecture in its keyboard-layout sample documentation.
That means kbdiulat.dll is:
- A Microsoft Windows system DLL
- A keyboard-input component
- Associated with the Inuktitut–Latin layout
- Not a normal application dependency
- Not a device driver that should be installed through Device Manager
- Not a COM component that should normally be registered with
regsvr32
You may see the error even if you have never knowingly selected Inuktitut. A language pack, OEM Windows image, previous user, organization policy, migration, or incomplete language-feature installation may have added the layout. A program named in the error may merely have triggered Windows input handling; it does not necessarily own the DLL.

Common symptoms and likely causes
| What you see | More likely explanation | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “kbdiulat.dll is missing from your computer” | A Windows component is absent or damaged | Install updates, then run DISM and SFC |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL, a dependency, or its loading context is unavailable | Repair Windows and inspect the keyboard layout |
| “Error loading kbdiulat.dll” while changing language | An incomplete or damaged language feature | Remove and re-add the keyboard layout |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong, modified, or mismatched DLL | Remove the replacement and use Windows repair |
| The error began after antivirus activity | The file may have been quarantined | Check protection history, then scan and repair |
| SFC reports no violations | The problem may be layout registration or language configuration | Reinstall the layout and test another user profile |
| The error started after an update or shutdown | Component-store, disk, or update damage is possible | Restart after updates, then run DISM and SFC |
The exact wording varies. Common Windows loader messages include “could not be loaded,” “was not found,” and “not designed to run on Windows.” Those messages do not prove that a particular game, installer, or runtime package is responsible.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Start with Windows Update because a pending servicing repair may already contain the correct system component.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Repeat the test that produced the
kbdiulat.dllmessage.
If the error disappears, the missing component was likely restored during servicing. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than searching for a DLL online.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs or supplies the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected files.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for a while.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test again.
Microsoft’s current procedure is documented in Use the System File Checker tool to repair missing or corrupted system files.
A message saying that SFC found and repaired corrupted files indicates that Windows made a repair. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run the DISM command again before repeating SFC. If DISM itself fails, note the error and move to the Windows recovery options below.
Running these commands manually means interpreting logs and repeating repairs without always knowing what changed. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the underlying Windows problems and show what it found; its repair actions are available with the full version, but it is not required and Windows servicing remains the proper first-line repair.
Fix 3: Remove and add the Inuktitut–Latin keyboard layout
If the message appears while signing in, switching languages, or opening language settings, the layout installation may be incomplete.
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Time & language.
- Select Language & region.
- Find the language that contains the affected keyboard.
- Select the three dots beside it and choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select the unwanted or damaged layout.
- Select Remove.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Language options.
- Select Add a keyboard.
- Add Inuktitut – Latin if you need it.
If the layout is not needed, leaving it removed may stop the trigger. If Windows requires a matching language before showing the keyboard, add or select that language first. Microsoft explains these controls in Manage the language and keyboard input layout settings.
On Windows 10, the path is generally Settings > Time & Language > Language. Select the language, choose Options, remove the keyboard under Keyboards, then use Add a keyboard to install it again.
The repair worked if the layout appears correctly in the input-language switcher and the original error no longer appears during sign-in or keyboard switching.

Security software can remove or quarantine a damaged or suspicious copy. Do not restore a file simply because its name is kbdiulat.dll.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
kbdiulat.dll. - Review its path, detection reason, and action.
- If the file was outside a normal Windows directory or was modified, leave it quarantined.
- Run Scan options > Full scan.
- Use DISM and SFC to restore the Windows copy.
A credible Windows file should be restored through Windows servicing, not through a random download. The file’s presence in System32 alone does not prove authenticity. Check its Properties > Digital Signatures tab when available, and confirm that the signer is Microsoft. A missing signature, unexpected location, or recently downloaded replacement is a reason to remove it through a supported repair path.
Fix 5: Check for disk or file-system damage
Repeated corruption can indicate storage problems rather than a single missing DLL.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator.
- Run:
chkdsk /scan
- Let the scan finish.
- Restart Windows.
- Run DISM followed by SFC again.
If Windows repeatedly reports unrepaired files, back up important documents and check the drive’s health using the manufacturer’s supported diagnostic utility. Persistent corruption may require System Restore, Windows recovery, or an in-place repair.

kbdiulat.dll is not a keyboard hardware driver. Device Manager will not normally restore it.
If you also have a separate keyboard problem, you can check the hardware driver without trying to repair the DLL:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Keyboards.
- Right-click the affected physical keyboard.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart if Windows installs an update.
Do not uninstall a keyboard device merely because kbdiulat.dll is missing. That addresses hardware input, not the Windows keyboard-layout component.
Manually hunting through many driver versions is unnecessary when the problem is broader than one keyboard device. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its driver installation requires the full version, and updating a driver will not replace a damaged Windows keyboard-layout DLL.
Fix 7: Escalate to Windows recovery or repair installation
Use this path when updates, DISM, SFC, and layout reinstalling do not resolve the error.
First, try System Restore if the problem began recently:
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it and select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Follow the wizard and restart.
Microsoft lists System Restore and related options in its Windows recovery guidance.

Before a larger repair, back up important files. If the message continues after an in-place repair, test another Windows user profile and inspect Event Viewer for the exact process that triggered the loader error. That process may identify a stale language registration or third-party startup component.
Why you should not download or register this DLL
There is no need to install a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX package, or .NET runtime for kbdiulat.dll. No official Microsoft standalone download for this file is needed for normal repair.

Avoid these common wrong turns:
- Downloading a DLL from an untrusted file-index site
- Copying a DLL into a game or application folder
- Overwriting
System32orSysWOW64 - Mixing files from different Windows builds
- Choosing a 32-bit or 64-bit file by guesswork
- Running
regsvr32 kbdiulat.dll
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. A keyboard-layout DLL is loaded by the Windows input subsystem, so registration is not the normal fix. Microsoft documents the intended use and limitations of Regsvr32.
On 64-bit Windows, architecture-specific system files may exist in different protected locations. The correct copy depends on the Windows build and servicing architecture. Do not decide what belongs in System32 or SysWOW64 by comparing online file listings.
Frequently asked questions
Is kbdiulat.dll malware?
It is a genuine Microsoft Windows keyboard-layout DLL. A file with that name can still be fake or modified if it came from an unexpected location, so check its path and Microsoft digital signature.
Do I need Inuktitut to have this file?
No. The layout may have been installed by a language pack, OEM image, previous user, policy, or migration. If you do not need it, remove the keyboard layout through Windows Settings after repairing Windows.

One-click scans. No signup required.
Is this file part of a game or application?
No reliable evidence identifies a particular game, installer, or application as its owner. A program named in the error may simply have caused Windows to load keyboard input.
Should I reinstall Visual C++ or DirectX?
No. Those packages are not the correct first response to a missing Windows keyboard-layout DLL.
What does “specified module could not be found” mean?
It can mean the named DLL is missing, but it can also indicate an unavailable dependency or loading context. Copying one file does not necessarily address that condition.
What if SFC says there are no integrity violations?
The file may be intact while the language feature or keyboard-layout registration is damaged. Remove and re-add the layout, test another user profile, and continue with Windows recovery if necessary.
Where should the file be located?
The typical Windows location is %windir%System32, with architecture-specific copies possible on 64-bit Windows. Do not use a location alone as proof of authenticity, and do not manually copy a downloaded file there.
