If Windows says this file is missing, the safest fix is to identify the Canon printer package that installed it and repair or reinstall that package.
Do not download cnbic4_3.dll from a random DLL website or copy it into C:WindowsSystem32. A loose file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, or fail because another driver dependency is missing.

Fix 1: Identify the Canon printer and reinstall its driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
The exact Canon model matters. Multiple Canon printer packages can exist on one computer, and reinstalling an unrelated model may leave the error unchanged.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind the installed Canon printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for Canon printers and note the complete model name.
- Select the printer and check whether it is connected, paused, or showing an error.
Also check installed Canon software:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for Canon.
- Write down the names of Canon printer utilities, drivers, and scanning packages.
If the error appears while opening a document or starting another application, that application may be calling a Canon print monitor, status utility, or plug-in. The named program is not necessarily the owner of the DLL.

Repair the Canon package
- In Installed apps, select the Canon program associated with the printer.
- Select Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows and test printing.
Traditional desktop software may use a different path:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Canon program.
- Choose Repair or Change, if offered.
- Follow the installer instructions and restart.
Not every desktop program provides a Repair option. If Repair is missing or the error returns, uninstall the Canon printer software, restart Windows, and install the driver again.
Download the correct Canon package
Use Canon’s official support site, select your region, search for the exact printer model, and choose the package for your Windows version and system architecture. Prefer the complete driver or software package when the error involves a Canon utility rather than printing alone.
During installation:
- Close print-related applications.
- Extract the downloaded Canon package if it is compressed.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Run
Setup.exe. - Accept the license terms.
- Select the correct printer.
- Complete the installation.
- Restart Windows if requested.
Test the printer by opening Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, selecting the Canon printer, and choosing Print test page when that option is available.
If the Canon installer reports that the package is incompatible, stop rather than forcing a random DLL into a Windows folder. Check whether you selected Windows 10 or Windows 11 correctly, whether the package matches x86 or x64 Windows, and whether Canon provides a newer driver for the model.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through driver versions and checking which installed drivers are stale. Its free scan identifies issues, while repair or driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the Canon model-specific package remains the preferred source for this file.
Fix 2: Let Windows Update find a printer driver
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the first printer-driver source. Availability depends on the printer model and Windows version.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart the computer.
- Return to Windows Update and check again.
Then look for optional driver updates:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Canon printer driver if one is listed.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Check View optional updates for a Canon printer driver, if that link appears.
After restarting, open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11, or Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 10. Remove the Canon printer if it is listed incorrectly, select Add device, and add it again.
If Windows Update does not provide a compatible driver, return to Fix 1 and use Canon’s official model support page.
Fix 3: Remove an old printer driver through Device Manager
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this step when the printer was replaced, Windows was upgraded, or an old Canon package appears to conflict with the current installation.

Restart Windows, then install the exact Canon driver again. Do not manually delete files from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore. Windows manages the DriverStore, and overwriting its files can interfere with driver servicing and signature checks.
Device Manager may not show every Canon utility or print-monitor component. If the error continues after removing the visible device, uninstall the Canon software from Installed apps or Programs and Features, then reinstall the complete package.
Fix 4: Check Microsoft Defender quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
If cnbic4_3.dll disappeared suddenly, security software may have quarantined it. That does not prove the file was safe or malicious.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an entry mentioning the Canon installation or
cnbic4_3.dll.
Only restore the file if you can verify that it came from a trusted Canon installation and the detection is confirmed as a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring a genuinely malicious file can put the computer at risk.
If you are uncertain, leave the file quarantined, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, and reinstall the Canon package from Canon’s official support site instead. Never whitelist an unknown DLL merely because its filename matches the error.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM and System File Checker are appropriate when several unrelated Windows components are failing or Windows itself appears corrupted. They are not the normal replacement mechanism for a third-party Canon driver file.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until SFC reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. SFC may report that no integrity violations were found because cnbic4_3.dll is a Canon driver component rather than a protected Windows system file. That result does not rule out a damaged Canon installation.
If you regularly repeat SFC and DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a guided scan of broader Windows problems. Its free scan shows detected issues, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional and does not replace reinstalling the correct Canon driver.
Fix 6: Check the architecture and dependencies
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
A reported historical record identifies cnbic4_3.dll as a 32-bit Canon driver component. A 32-bit driver file can be correct on 64-bit Windows because many printer utilities and applications remain 32-bit.
Rank #3

- Crisp, Vibrant Prints - Experience impressive print quality for both documents and photos, thanks to its 2-cartridge hybrid ink system that delivers sharp text and vivid colors

- Seamless Multi-Page Handling - Tackle multi-page documents with ease using the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) for quick scanning and copying
Check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Check System type.
Install the architecture specified by Canon for your printer and Windows edition. Do not replace a 32-bit Canon component with an arbitrary 64-bit DLL.
The message “The specified module could not be found” can also mean that cnbic4_3.dll exists but one of its dependencies is missing. In that situation, copying the named file may not help. Reinstalling the complete Canon package restores the DLL and its related components together.
On ARM-based Windows computers, a conventional x86 or x64 Canon package may not work. Microsoft recommends using Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > Add device unless Canon provides specific ARM instructions.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
If the error began immediately after a driver update, printer cleanup, or Windows change, System Restore may reverse the change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore can revert drivers, system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before continuing. This fix works only if a suitable restore point exists, and it may not resolve a problem caused by an obsolete Canon driver.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why downloading the DLL alone usually fails
A DLL is part of a software package, not normally a standalone repair item. A downloaded copy can be:
- The wrong version for the Canon package.
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Missing required dependencies.
- Modified or bundled with unwanted software.
- Unsigned or unrelated to the installed printer.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or the application directory can also create conflicting copies. A DriverStore path reported for an older Canon package is not a universal installation path.

Common causes and the matching fix
| Likely cause | Best response |
|---|---|
| Incomplete or damaged Canon installation | Repair or reinstall the exact model package |
| Stale driver after an upgrade or printer replacement | Remove the old Canon package, then install a compatible driver |
| Wrong architecture or incompatible legacy driver | Check System type and Canon compatibility information |
| Defender quarantine | Review Protection history and reinstall from Canon if uncertain |
| Missing dependency | Reinstall the complete package rather than copying one DLL |
| Wider Windows corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Recent driver or software change | Try System Restore |
| Suspicious replacement or malware | Run a full or offline Defender scan and remove untrusted software |
If the printer is discontinued, the newest Canon driver may support only an older Windows release. Compatibility mode is not guaranteed, but it can be tried only after checking Canon’s documentation and creating a restore point. If no compatible driver exists, Windows’ built-in printer support may provide limited functionality, or replacing the printer may be the practical solution.
If the error remains
Collect these details before contacting Canon or Microsoft support:
- The exact Canon printer model.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its build.
- Whether the system is x86, x64, or ARM.
- The complete error text.
- The executable named in the error, if shown.
- The full path of any existing
cnbic4_3.dll. - Recent entries in Event Viewer.
- Whether the error occurs during startup, printing, scanning, or opening a document.
This distinguishes a Canon utility problem from a print-spooler issue, a missing dependency, or an unrelated application that happens to load the printer component.
FAQ
Is cnbic4_3.dll a Windows system file?
No verified evidence shows that modern Windows ships this file as an operating-system component. Reported public metadata associates it with Canon Inkjet Printer Driver and identifies Canon as the company.
Does it belong to Visual C++ or DirectX?
There is no verified evidence that it belongs to either runtime. Do not install unrelated runtimes just because this DLL is missing.
Recommended Free Tools
Should I put it in System32?
No. Restore it through the correct Canon printer-driver installation. Manual copying can create a wrong or unsafe installation.
Why does a non-Canon application mention the file?
The application may be invoking a Canon print utility, print monitor, or plug-in. The program showing the error is not necessarily the package that originally installed the DLL.
Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files and may not restore a third-party Canon driver component.
What is the safest fix?
Identify the printer model, remove or repair its Canon software, and install the matching package from Canon’s official support site. Use Windows Update first when it offers a suitable printer driver.
