Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutecnbjdrv.dll is a legacy Canon BJ printer-driver component. The file name belongs to the Canon BJ Mini Printer Driver, not to Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or ordinary game software.
The safest first repair is to remove the affected Canon printer from Windows and reinstall it through Printers & scanners, Windows Update, or the exact driver package for the printer model. Do not download a loose copy of cnbjdrv.dll and place it in System32, SysWOW64, or a game folder.

Although some file records identify it with Microsoft(R) Windows(R) 2000 Operating System and Microsoft Corporation, that describes a historical distribution or build. Different historical driver packages can contain different versions, architectures, paths, and file details. The correct replacement must come from the matching printer-driver package.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the Canon printer
Time needed: About 10–20 minutes.
This is the best starting point when the error appears while printing, adding a printer, opening Canon printer software, or starting the print spooler. It restores the driver package instead of replacing one file and leaving its INF, catalog, configuration, and rendering files inconsistent.

Remove the existing printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer connected with the error.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
If more than one old Canon printer is listed, remove only the device you have identified as affected. If you no longer use the printer, removing its old entry may be the complete fix.
Add the printer again
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait while Windows searches for printers.
- Select the Canon printer when it appears.
- Follow the installation prompts.
- Print a test page from the printer’s properties.
If Windows finds the printer and the test page prints without the DLL error, the repair worked. If Windows cannot find it, make sure the printer is powered on and connected to the same network, or connect a USB printer directly before selecting Add device again.
Windows printer drivers are packages, not isolated DLLs. A package can include an INF installation file, catalog signature, GPD description, user interface files, monitor components, and rendering files. Windows stages these files in its Driver Store and selects the package appropriate for the printer and operating system.
Fix 2: Install the current driver through Windows Update
Time needed: About 10–30 minutes, depending on the update.
A damaged or outdated Canon driver may remain installed even after you remove and add the printer again. Windows Update can provide a compatible printer-driver package without requiring you to identify an old DLL manually.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if that category is available.
- Select the Canon printer update or other relevant printer-driver update.
- Select Download & install.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Add the printer again if it is not already listed.
- Print a test page.
If no Canon driver appears, Windows may already have the best available package for that printer, or the model may be too old for automatic installation. Use the exact printer model shown on its label and obtain the driver from Canon’s official support service or the printer’s original installation media. Do not choose a package merely because its file list mentions cnbjdrv.dll.
For an older printer, Windows also provides a manual driver-selection route:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Scroll down and select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select Add.
- Follow the Add Printer Driver Wizard.
- Choose the processor architecture requested by Windows.
- Select Windows Update when offered.
- Choose the Canon manufacturer and the exact printer model.
- Finish the wizard.
- Add the printer again and print a test page.
Microsoft treats this older-driver method as a last resort. It can help with legacy printers, but selecting a similar-looking model can produce printing failures or another missing-file error.
Manually checking every device and comparing old driver packages is tedious, especially after an operating-system upgrade. Outbyte Driver Updater can perform a free scan to show which drivers are outdated; the repair or driver installation is done by the full version, and reinstalling the exact Canon package remains the definitive fix for this printer-specific error.
Fix 3: Install a verified INF package with PnPUtil
Time needed: About 10–15 minutes after you have the correct package.
Use this method only when you already have a verified, signed Canon driver package containing an INF file for the exact printer and Windows architecture. It is not a way to install a random copy of cnbjdrv.dll.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Scan & Copy Handling - Utilize the device’s integrated scanner for efficient scanning and copying operations
- Download or copy the complete driver package from Canon, Windows Update, or trusted original installation media.
- Extract it to a known folder, such as
C:CanonDriver. - Confirm that the folder contains the appropriate
.inffile. - Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run the following command, replacing the path with the actual INF location:
pnputil /add-driver "C:PathTodriver.inf" /install
- Read the result in the Command Prompt window.
- Restart Windows if requested.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Add the Canon printer.
- Print a test page.
A successful PnPUtil operation reports that the driver package was added or installed. If Windows rejects the package, stop there. The package may be unsigned, intended for another architecture, intended for another Windows release, or not designed for that printer.
Do not modify files directly inside:
C:WindowsSystem32DriverStoreFileRepository
Microsoft says staged driver files should not be changed directly. Remove and reinstall the complete package through Windows, the printer interface, or PnPUtil instead.
Fix 4: Repair Windows component corruption with DISM and SFC
Time needed: About 15–45 minutes, sometimes longer.
Use this repair when Windows Update is failing, several Windows components are malfunctioning, or System File Checker reports corruption. DISM and SFC repair Windows component problems; they do not replace the need for a Canon printer-driver installation when the missing file belongs to that package.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove and reinstall the Canon printer using the steps in Fix 1.
- Print a test page.
If SFC reports that it repaired corrupted files, restart and test again. If it says it could not repair some files, run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC once. If the error appears only when a Canon printer is installed, reinstall the printer package even if both commands complete successfully.
Repeating repair commands without knowing what changed can waste time when the real problem is a missing printer package. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan showing detected Windows problems; the repair is done by the full version, and it should be treated as optional rather than a replacement for reinstalling the correct Canon driver.
Fix 5: Check Windows Security quarantine
Time needed: About 5–10 minutes.
If the error started immediately after antivirus activity, Windows Security may have quarantined a legitimate driver file. Do not restore it automatically. A file with the correct name can still be unsafe if it is in the wrong folder, unsigned, modified, or unrelated to the printer package.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection connected with
cnbjdrv.dll, Canon, or the printer installation. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Restore or allow the file only if you can confirm that it came from the legitimate, signed Canon or Microsoft printer-driver package and that the path belongs to the printer installation. Otherwise, leave it quarantined, run a full Microsoft Defender scan, remove the printer, and reinstall the driver from an official source.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless you deliberately allow it. That repeated detection is a reason to investigate the package, not a reason to keep adding exclusions.
Fix 6: Identify and remove a stale startup reference
Time needed: About 10–20 minutes.
A cnbjdrv.dll error at every login, when no printer is being used, often points to an old Canon utility or an incomplete uninstall. The important clue is the program named in the error dialog and the full path Windows displays.
- Write down the executable name shown in the error.
- Write down the complete path, if displayed.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Canon printer utilities or software associated with the old printer.
- Select the relevant application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Remove the unused printer from Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
If the error stops after uninstalling the old utility, the DLL was being requested by a stale program rather than by a current print operation. If it continues, inspect Task Manager > Startup apps for an identifiable Canon entry and disable only the obsolete entry you recognize.

Do not delete random startup items or registry values merely because their names are unfamiliar. If the caller is not clearly identified, capture the executable path and investigate that program before removing anything.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Fix 7: Check a game or unrelated application
Time needed: About 10–30 minutes.
cnbjdrv.dll is not established as normal game middleware. If a game launcher or unrelated application names it, first determine whether the request is coming from the application itself, an old printer utility, or a malicious file placed beside the program.
For a Steam game:
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for verification to finish.
- Start the game again.
If verification does not help, inspect the error’s executable path. A request from the game’s installation folder is different from a request from a Windows printer-driver directory. Do not copy a printer DLL into the game folder. If the game itself is damaged, reinstalling that game remains the definitive repair.
Why regsvr32 usually does not fix this file
regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It registers DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly for COM components.
A printer-driver DLL installed through an INF package is not automatically a self-registering COM component. Running this command is therefore normally irrelevant:
regsvr32 cnbjdrv.dll
It may produce an entry-point error, or it may register nothing useful. Use regsvr32 only when the specific software vendor’s instructions identify the DLL as a self-registering component and provide the correct path and architecture. For cnbjdrv.dll, repair the printer-driver package instead.
Why loose DLL downloads are a bad repair
Random DLL download sites sites can provide:
- A file from the wrong Windows release
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- A modified or malicious file
- A file with no matching INF, catalog, GPD, or configuration files
- A copy that does not match the installed printer model
Even when the error disappears temporarily, Windows may still be unable to initialize the printer because the rest of the driver package is missing. A loose DLL also does not repair a stale startup reference or a damaged installation.
Use Windows Update, the exact Canon model’s official support package, Microsoft’s printer-driver workflow, or verified original installation media. Never replace files inside the Driver Store manually.
32-bit, 64-bit, and legacy Windows details
Historical records show more than one build of this file, associated with older Windows versions and different printer-driver packages. Do not select a replacement based only on a file size, hash, metadata label, or a path copied from an old troubleshooting page.
A 32-bit legacy printer driver is not interchangeable with a 64-bit package. Current ARM-based Windows systems may also require Windows’ printer-installation workflow rather than an old manufacturer installer. Let Windows select the compatible package whenever possible.

The System32 and SysWOW64 folder names are easy to misread in old instructions. Do not infer the correct architecture from a folder name or copy the file between them. Install the complete driver package selected for the actual Windows edition and printer.
What probably caused the error
| Likely cause | Typical clue | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| Incomplete or corrupted Canon package | Error appears while printing or adding the printer | Remove and reinstall the printer |
| Old driver after an upgrade | Printer worked before Windows or driver changes | Install a current compatible package |
| Antivirus quarantine | File disappeared after a security event | Verify the package, scan, then reinstall |
| Windows component corruption | Several Windows features or updates fail | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Stale Canon utility | Error appears at login without printing | Identify and uninstall the old caller |
| Wrong or tampered file | Path, signature, or source looks suspicious | Scan the system and reinstall from an official source |
The most useful diagnostic question is: Which executable or service is requesting cnbjdrv.dll, and what full path does the error show?
A request during printer installation or printing points toward the Canon driver package. A request at every boot points more strongly toward a stale startup item or old printer utility. A request from a game or unrelated application requires checking that application’s files and the caller’s path rather than assuming the game needs a Canon driver.

FAQ
Is cnbjdrv.dll a Windows system DLL?
It is a legacy Canon BJ printer-driver component associated with historical Microsoft Windows printer-driver distributions. It is not a general-purpose Windows runtime library, and not every modern Windows installation is expected to contain it.
Is cnbjdrv.dll malware?
The filename alone cannot establish that. Check the full path, digital signature, metadata, antivirus result, and relationship to a legitimate Canon or Microsoft printer-driver package. A copy beside an unrelated executable deserves closer scrutiny.
Do I need Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No evidence connects this file to those runtime packages. Installing them is not the appropriate first response to a cnbjdrv.dll error.
Should I copy the file into System32?
No. Copying a loose DLL can create an architecture mismatch, leave the rest of the driver package broken, and introduce an unsafe file. Reinstall the complete printer-driver package.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Why does a game ask for a Canon printer DLL?
There is no verified general game dependency for this file. Verify the game files, then inspect the executable path and investigate old printer software or a suspicious DLL placed beside the game.
Can I delete the file?
Do not delete it manually from Windows or the Driver Store. If it belongs to an unused printer, remove the printer and uninstall its associated software through Windows. If it is outside a legitimate driver location, scan it before taking further action.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Record the exact error text, calling executable, full file path, Canon printer model, Windows edition and build, system architecture, recent driver or antivirus changes, and any relevant Event Viewer or print-service event. That information distinguishes a missing driver package from a stale reference or a malicious imitation.
