basefx.dll is an Animation Shop application file, not a Windows system file. If Windows says basefx.dll is missing, was not found, failed to load, or is not designed to run on Windows, repair the Animation Shop installation rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest order is:
- Confirm the error belongs to Animation Shop.
- Check whether antivirus quarantined the file.
- Repair or reinstall Animation Shop from your original installer or legitimate installation media.
- Check for a missing companion dependency.
- Use Windows repair commands only when other Windows programs are also affected.
- Avoid copying
basefx.dllinto Windows system folders.
What is basefx.dll?
basefx.dll is a third-party application DLL associated with Jasc Animation Shop. Its reported internal name is BaseFX, and it was developed by Jasc Software Inc.

The exact folder can differ if Animation Shop was installed somewhere else. The important point is that basefx.dll belongs beside the Animation Shop executable, such as Anim.exe. It should not normally be placed in:

Animation Shop is legacy 32-bit software. A 64-bit edition of Windows can generally run a 32-bit application, but it still requires the correct 32-bit application files. A 64-bit DLL is not a substitute for a required 32-bit DLL.
Which error messages does basefx.dll cause?
You may see one of these messages when starting Animation Shop:
- “The program can’t start because basefx.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because basefx.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading basefx.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load basefx.dll.”
- “The procedure entry point … could not be located in the dynamic link library basefx.dll.”
- “basefx.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
- A “Bad Image” message with status
0xc000012f.
The phrase specified module could not be found does not always mean that basefx.dll itself is absent. The file may exist while another DLL required by it is missing or damaged.
Before changing anything, note whether the message appears only for Animation Shop. If several unrelated programs fail with similar messages, the problem may involve Windows components, malware, disk damage, or a recent system change rather than one missing Animation Shop file.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall Animation Shop
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on whether you have the installer
This is the most likely fix because basefx.dll belongs to Animation Shop. Reinstalling the complete application restores the DLL and its companion files together.
First check the installation folder
- Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
- Browse to the folder where Animation Shop is installed.
- Look for
Anim.exe. - In the same folder, look for
basefx.dll.
If the file is missing but Anim.exe is present, the installation is incomplete or the file was removed. If both files are present, the problem may be a missing dependency, an incorrect file, or application compatibility.
Do not move basefx.dll from another application folder. A file with the same name from a different product may be the wrong version or architecture.
Use Windows repair or uninstall options
If Animation Shop appears in Windows’ installed-program list:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Animation Shop.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options if available.

- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find Animation Shop.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the original Animation Shop installer again.
You can also use the older Control Panel route:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type:
appwiz.cpl
- Press Enter.
- Select Animation Shop.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Uninstall, depending on what the installer provides.
Use the original installer, a trusted backup of your installation media, or legitimate media supplied with your software purchase. There is no verified current official Corel download page for the legacy Jasc Animation Shop installer, so do not treat a random download page as an official source.

After repairing or reinstalling:
- Restart Windows.
- Start Animation Shop from its normal shortcut.
- If it still fails, open the installation folder and confirm that
basefx.dllis present besideAnim.exe. - If the file disappears again, continue with the antivirus check below.
- If the error changes to name another DLL, repair the complete application again rather than downloading only that newly named file.
If reinstalling does not restore basefx.dll, check whether the installer is targeting a different folder from the one used by the shortcut. Right-click the Animation Shop shortcut, choose Properties, and review the Target path. The installed files should be in the same application directory referenced by that shortcut.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security Protection History
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes
Security software can quarantine a legitimate old application file, especially when the file comes from legacy software. A detection does not automatically prove that basefx.dll is malware. Check the path, origin, and current scan result before deciding what to do.
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open the app.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions.
- Look for an entry mentioning
basefx.dll, Animation Shop, or the Animation Shop installation folder. - Expand the entry and note the full path and detection name.

If the file came from your original installer and the path is inside the Animation Shop directory, you can review the available restore or allow options. Do this only after confirming that the installer and file are from trusted original media and that a current scan does not identify a broader threat.

After restoring a quarantined file, start Animation Shop. If Windows Security immediately quarantines it again, do not repeatedly whitelist it. Leave the file isolated and investigate the installer, application files, and system for malware.
Fix 3: Check whether another DLL is the real problem

A missing basefx.dll message can be caused by a missing dependency. Reinstalling the complete application is safer than replacing individual files because the installer should restore the expected group of companion DLLs.

There is no verified evidence that basefx.dll itself is a Visual C++ redistributable file. If the message specifically names a Microsoft runtime, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ downloads. Select the architecture identified by the application or installer. Do not assume that installing the newest package replaces every older runtime.

Visual C++ packages can exist side by side. Install one only when the error identifies it or the legitimate application installer requires it. Do not install DirectX, .NET, a graphics driver, or a runtime merely because the word “DLL” appears in the message.
After installing a required Microsoft runtime:
- Restart Windows.
- Start Animation Shop.
- If the same
basefx.dllmessage remains, repair Animation Shop again. - If another Jasc DLL is named, use the Animation Shop installer as the source for that file.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes
Animation Shop is legacy 32-bit software. Windows 11 and Windows 10 may run many 32-bit desktop applications, but compatibility is not guaranteed for every old program or installation method.
Do not copy a 64-bit DLL into the Animation Shop folder. Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 to make the error disappear. Windows uses these folders for system components, and mixing application DLLs with system DLLs can cause new failures.

To inspect the Windows architecture:
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
This tells you whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit, but it does not identify the architecture of basefx.dll. The safest source for the application DLL remains the original Animation Shop installer.
If Animation Shop worked previously and stopped after moving its folder, restore the entire program folder to its original location or reinstall it. A shortcut may still point to an old directory while the program files are now elsewhere.
If the application starts only after using compatibility settings:
- Right-click the Animation Shop shortcut.
- Choose Properties.
- Open the Compatibility tab.
- Select Run this program in compatibility mode for.
- Choose an older Windows version only if it improves behavior.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the application again.
Compatibility settings may help an old application run, but they do not replace a missing DLL. There is no verified guarantee that Animation Shop is fully supported on current Windows releases.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes
Use this step when several unrelated programs fail, Windows reports damaged system files, or the error references files under C:Windows. These commands repair protected Windows components. They do not normally restore a missing private Animation Shop DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its instructions for using System File Checker.
Let each scan finish. Do not close the Command Prompt window because progress appears there. When both commands complete, restart Windows and try Animation Shop again.

Possible SFC results include:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected Windows files appear intact.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart and test again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: run DISM again, restart, and repeat SFC. If the issue affects multiple programs, investigate Windows recovery options.
- The command cannot run: confirm that Command Prompt was opened as administrator.

Fix 6: Check drivers only when the symptoms point there
Time needed: 10 to 20 minutes
A graphics or device driver does not normally install basefx.dll, and there is no verified evidence that a driver is the usual cause of this file-specific error. Driver work is relevant when Animation Shop fails alongside display problems, device errors, crashes in other graphics applications, or a recent driver change.
To inspect device status:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click the display adapter.
- Select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab to review the available actions.
If a problem began immediately after a driver update, Roll Back Driver may be appropriate. Otherwise, use Update driver and follow Windows’ prompts, or obtain the driver from the computer or graphics hardware manufacturer.
Do not use Device Manager to replace basefx.dll. It is an application file, not a device-driver component.

Fix 7: Consider System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20 to 45 minutes
If Animation Shop worked before a recent uninstall, cleanup operation, update, or application change, System Restore may help when a suitable restore point exists.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open the matching Control Panel result.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs.
- Follow the wizard to start the restore.
Microsoft explains available recovery methods in its guide to recovery options in Windows.
System Restore does not replace personal files, but it can roll back applications, drivers, settings, and system state. After it finishes, test Animation Shop. If the DLL is still missing, reinstall the application from legitimate media.
Why regsvr32 usually does not apply
Do not routinely run:
regsvr32 basefx.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. An ordinary private application DLL does not necessarily expose those functions. Registering it will not recreate a deleted file, repair a damaged installation, or install missing dependencies.
If regsvr32 reports that an entry point is missing, that is evidence that the DLL is not designed for that registration operation. Microsoft documents the command’s syntax and purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Use the Animation Shop installer instead.
Why downloading basefx.dll is unsafe

Even a clean file may not solve “specified module could not be found” if a dependency is missing. Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, the Windows directory, or a random application folder can also create version conflicts and DLL search-path risks.

That is not recommended unless the other computer has the same legitimate Animation Shop installation and you are restoring files from trusted installation media. Copying a single DLL may leave other files missing and may introduce a mismatched version.
Should basefx.dll be in System32?
