Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver

1. Identify the printer model
Check one of these locations:
- Open Settings.

If the printer is not listed, check the label on the device or its original documentation. Do not select a similar-looking model. Canon packages can contain different files for closely related printers.
2. Check Windows details
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Record the Windows edition and version.
- Under Device specifications, check System type.
Use this information on Canon’s official Support or Software and Drivers page. Select the exact printer model, your Windows release, and the driver offered for that configuration. Do not use a generic package simply because its name contains the same printer family.
A 64-bit Windows installation can still use some 32-bit printer software. Do not guess based only on the operating system’s bitness. Use the architecture specified by Canon’s installer and the package intended for the program loading the driver.
3. Remove the damaged Canon software
If the Canon installer offers Repair or Change, use that first:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the Canon printer software.
- Choose Change, Repair, or the equivalent option.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Restart Windows.
If repair is not available:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for Canon printer software.
- Select the three-dot menu beside the relevant package.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows when removal finishes.
You can also use Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features. If several Canon printer packages are installed, identify which printer uses each one before removing anything. Removing the wrong package may affect another printer.

4. Install the Canon package again
Run the downloaded Canon installer as an administrator if required:
- Right-click the installer.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Print a test page.
If printing works and the Canon utility opens without the error, the repair is complete. If the same message returns, continue with the checks below rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.
Manually comparing many driver packages and determining which one is stale can be tedious. Fix 2: Check whether Microsoft Defender quarantined it
An antivirus action can leave a printer package incomplete. Do not assume a detection is a false positive merely because the filename resembles a Canon file.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries from the time the error began.
- Expand any detection involving
cnbjop78.dllor Canon printer software. - Record the detection name, original path, and action taken.

Only restore a quarantined file when you have verified all of the following:
- The file came from the official Canon installer
- The original path belongs to the Canon driver package

Fix 3: Repair Windows components when other files are failing
System File Checker does not normally restore a third-party Canon driver file. Use these commands when Windows itself reports damaged components, multiple unrelated applications fail, updates fail, or system files are also missing.
Run DISM first
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Try printing again.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, test the printer and Canon utility. If it reports that it could not repair some files, repeat the Canon driver reinstall and investigate broader Windows recovery options. Do not expect SFC to recreate a missing Canon package file from Microsoft’s component store.

Fix 4: Remove old driver leftovers carefully
Several Canon packages may coexist after printer replacements or Windows upgrades. Avoid deleting files directly from System32, SysWOW64, or the Driver Store.
First remove the Canon software through Settings > Apps > Installed apps or Control Panel > Programs and Features, restart, and run the correct Canon installer again. If Windows still lists an old printer:

For complex print-server or shared-printer installations, an administrator may need to remove an unused driver through the print-management tools. Do not remove a package if another working Canon printer depends on it.

Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a universal repair
Do not begin with:
regsvr32 cnbjop78.dll
Printer-driver support DLLs are not automatically repaired by COM registration. The regsvr32 command is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer, as described in Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation.
Use it only if Canon’s installer documentation explicitly requires registration of this specific file. A registration error usually means the command is inappropriate, the architecture does not match, or a dependency is missing.

- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select a restore point created before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs, not personal documents. Afterward, install a compatible Canon driver rather than allowing the same failed package to return.
Why downloading the DLL separately is unsafe
A standalone DLL download can be:
- The wrong version for the installed Canon package
- The wrong architecture for the process loading it
- Missing other required dependencies
- Modified or bundled with malware
- Placed in the wrong directory
- Unable to repair the damaged driver registration or package metadata
Do not copy cnbjop78.dll into System32, SysWOW64, an application folder, or a random Canon directory as a first-line fix. The safe source is the complete, model-specific driver package supplied through Canon’s official support channels.

- The executable or Canon utility showing it
- The exact printer model
- Windows edition and version
- System architecture
- Whether the file is present and its current folder
- Recent driver, Windows, cleanup, or antivirus changes
- The Canon installer log, if available
- Any related Event Viewer error
If every Canon reinstall fails and other Windows components are also damaged, review Microsoft’s Windows recovery options. On supported Windows 11 systems, Settings > System > Recovery may also offer Fix problems using Windows Update or Reinstall now, which can repair the current Windows installation while preserving apps, files, and settings when that option is available.
