If cnbp_285.dll is missing, Windows is usually failing to load part of a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver rather than a Windows runtime. The safest fix is to identify the Canon printer or utility that calls it and reinstall the exact driver from Canon instead of downloading the DLL by itself.
What this file actually does
Public file records identify cnbp_285.dll as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver component associated with CANON INC. It is not documented as a standard Windows file, DirectX component, .NET file, or Visual C++ Redistributable file.

The filename alone does not identify a particular printer model. Canon’s current support portal selects software by printer model and Windows version, so the same-looking error can require different driver packages on different systems. Canon does not publicly provide a complete, current list of models that use this exact DLL.
Some older file databases report a 32-bit legacy copy and a Windows 7 DriverStore location. Treat those records as forensic clues, not universal installation details. Do not assume that the file belongs in System32, SysWOW64, or the folder of the program showing the error.

The file may be:
- genuinely deleted or quarantined;
- damaged during a failed driver installation;
- present but unable to load a dependency;
- the wrong architecture for the Canon application;
- referenced by an old Canon utility that is no longer installed correctly.
The exact program in the error dialog matters. It may be a Canon printer utility, scanner component, maintenance tool, setup program, or an old startup entry rather than the Windows printing service itself.
Causes by symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Best first response |
|---|---|---|
| Error appears while adding or reinstalling a Canon printer | Incomplete or damaged driver package | Remove the Canon software and reinstall the exact model driver |
| Error starts after a Windows upgrade or update | Driver mismatch or outdated Canon utility | Check Windows Update, then install the current Canon package |
| Error follows an antivirus alert | Quarantined or blocked driver file | Check Protection history and reinstall from Canon |
| Error appears after removing a printer | Stale startup entry or partial uninstall | Remove old Canon software and reinstall only if the printer is still needed |
| “Specified module could not be found” appears although the DLL exists | A dependency of the DLL is missing | Rebuild the complete Canon package rather than copying one file |
| Error appears after every restart with no printer connected | Old Canon utility or startup reference | Identify the calling program and uninstall the obsolete software |
| Several unrelated Windows programs also fail | Windows component corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| No Canon printer or software was ever installed | Stale bundled software or possible impersonation | Inspect the file path, signature, calling program, and security detections |
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely repair because the DLL belongs to a driver package. Reinstalling the package restores its related files, configuration, INF metadata, and dependencies together.
1. Identify the printer and affected program
Write down:
- the complete text of the error;
- the application named in the dialog;
- the Canon printer model, if one is installed;
- whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit;
- when the problem began.
To check Windows architecture:
- Right-click Start and select Settings.
- Open System > About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
A 64-bit Windows installation can still run a 32-bit Canon utility and require a 32-bit DLL. Do not choose a replacement based only on a “32-bit” or “64-bit” label from a file website. The printer model and Canon package must match the application using the file.

If you still use the printer:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Search for Canon software, printer utilities, scanner utilities, or Canon maintenance tools.
- Select the relevant entry, choose the three-dot menu, and click Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On older Control Panel layouts:
- Press Windows-R.
- Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the Canon software in Programs and Features.
- Click Uninstall.
If the printer itself remains listed, remove it separately:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Click Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Do not remove unrelated printer drivers merely because they appear in the list. If the Canon uninstaller is missing or fails, remove the visible Canon applications, restart, and continue with a fresh Canon installation.
3. Install the correct package
Go to Canon’s Software and Drivers portal.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select the correct Windows edition and architecture when Canon presents those choices.
- Download the complete printer driver or Canon setup package.
- Close printing and scanning applications.
- Run the installer as an administrator if Windows requests permission.
- Connect the printer when the installer asks, not before, unless Canon’s instructions say otherwise.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a Windows test page or open the Canon utility that previously failed.
Success means the error no longer appears and the printer is visible under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. If the same message returns, note which program displays it. The failing component may be an old Canon utility that the current printer driver did not replace.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several driver packages and guessing which device entry is stale; its free scan shows detected driver issues, while the repair or driver installation requires the full version. Canon’s exact-model installer remains the definitive fix for this Canon-specific DLL.

Windows Update can provide a suitable printer driver, although it may not include every Canon utility.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates and restart.
- Return to Windows Update.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Canon printer driver if one is listed.
- Restart and test the affected program.
Microsoft explains the driver-update process in its official driver guidance. If Windows Update offers no Canon driver, or the error concerns a Canon maintenance utility, use Canon’s model-specific package instead.

If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if relevant, Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device and select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Use Roll Back Driver only if it is available and the timing clearly matches the update.
- Otherwise choose Uninstall Device, restart, and reinstall the correct Canon package.
Do not repeatedly install drivers for similar Canon models. A near match can leave incompatible files and dependencies behind.
Fix 3: Check whether Windows Security quarantined the file
If the error started after a security warning, Windows Security may have removed or blocked a driver component.
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for a Canon file or the program named in the error.
- Expand the detection and inspect its path and detection details.
Do not restore cnbp_285.dll automatically. Confirm that the original file was installed by Canon, verify the surrounding installation, and scan the system first. Microsoft describes this review process in its Protection history guidance.
The safer recovery is normally to remove the damaged Canon installation and download a fresh package from Canon. If a clean Canon installer is detected again, leave the file quarantined and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not reliably restore a third-party Canon DLL that was never part of Windows, so use them when several Windows programs are malfunctioning, an update was interrupted, or broader system corruption is suspected.
- Open Start and type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the Canon application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance.
If SFC reports that it repaired files, retest. If it reports no integrity violations, the Canon driver is still the likely problem. If either command fails, record the exact message and return to the Canon reinstall rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder.

Outbyte PC Repair can make the manual process of repeating repair scans easier by showing detected system issues, but its free scan does not make paid repair mandatory and it is not a substitute for reinstalling the Canon package.
Fix 5: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
You may see advice to run:
regsvr32 cnbp_285.dll
That is not a general missing-DLL fix. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; a printer-driver component may not be a self-registering COM DLL.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
If you run it against the wrong file, Windows may report that the entry point is missing, that the module could not be loaded, or that the architecture is incompatible. None of those messages repairs the Canon installation.
Use regsvr32 only if Canon’s own documentation for the exact package explicitly instructs you to register that file. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference and self-registration documentation.
Fix 6: Handle “specified module could not be found”
This wording does not always mean cnbp_285.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load another library it depends on.
Check the following:
- Confirm the file path shown by the error or application log.
- Right-click the file and open Properties.
- Check the Digital Signatures tab if present.
- Check whether the file is inside a Canon installation or DriverStore location rather than a random download folder.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package.
- Avoid copying dependencies from another computer.
If the DLL exists and reinstalling does not help, identify the exact calling program. Inspect Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > Application around the failure time. An old Canon utility may be requesting a component that the current driver no longer installs.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent system change
System Restore is appropriate when the error began directly after a driver installation, application removal, or Windows change and a restore point exists.
- Press Windows-R.
- Type
rstrui.exeand press Enter. - Choose Next.
- Select a restore point created before the error began.
- Review Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally affects system files, drivers, and installed programs, not personal documents. It is a fallback, not a replacement for installing the correct Canon driver. Microsoft lists this and other recovery choices in its Windows recovery guidance.
Why standalone DLL downloads are a bad fix
Downloading cnbp_285.dll from a random DLL site can give you:
Rank #4
- Wireless Print/Copy/Scan
- Up to 2 years of ink included (2)
- Print up to 6,000 black & white / 7,700 color pages using a single set of inks! (1)
- Save up to $1,000 on ink (1)
- 1.35” Square LCD display
- malware or a tampered file;
- the wrong architecture;
- a mismatched legacy version;
- a file with missing dependencies;
- a DLL that does not match the printer driver’s configuration.
Copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder also bypasses the Canon installer. The installer may need to add driver metadata, configuration files, services, and related components. A copied file can therefore make the error change without making the printer work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Do not treat an obscure filename as proof of malware either. Verify its path, signature, calling application, and Windows Security results.
FAQ
Is cnbp_285.dll a Windows system file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. Public file records associate it with the Canon Inkjet Printer Driver.
Which Canon printer installed it?
There is no authoritative public list confirming every Canon model that uses this filename. Identify the printer connected to the computer and select that exact model in Canon’s driver portal.
Will SFC restore cnbp_285.dll?
Usually not if the file is a third-party Canon component. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while the Canon installer restores Canon driver files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does the file need to be registered?
There is no general reason to register it with regsvr32. Use that command only when Canon specifically documents registration for the exact package.
What if the error returns after every restart?
Find the program named in the dialog, then check Settings > Apps > Installed apps for an obsolete Canon utility. Remove it, restart, and reinstall the current driver only if the printer is still needed. If no Canon software exists, inspect startup entries and Event Viewer for the program making the request.
What if no Canon printer has ever been installed?
Treat the reference cautiously. It may come from stale bundled software, a migrated Windows installation, or an unwanted program impersonating a Canon file. Do not download a replacement DLL; inspect the file path and run a Windows Security scan.
