libsquish.dll Missing: Restore the Right GTA Tool on Windows

libsquish.dll is a third-party application DLL used by graphics and texture tools, including some GTA modding utilities. libsquish.dll is not a Windows system file, so the safest fix is to repair or reinstall the specific program that reports the error rather than copying the file into System32.

libsquish.dll belongs to the Squish image-compression library. Squish handles RGBA textures in DXT and S3TC formats, which are common in games and graphics utilities. Tools that import, export, or compress game textures may load it when they start or when a texture operation begins.

Public software listings associate the DLL with TXD Workshop, GTA San Andreas utilities, GTA IV modding tools, CLEO-related software, and similar programs. These are useful leads, not proof that every copy of the file belongs to the same product. The exact application must be identified from the error message and the folder containing the executable.

Windows does not normally install libsquish.dll as part of Windows 10 or Windows 11. It is normally an application-local dependency placed beside the program that needs it. Windows searches an unpackaged application’s own directory early in the DLL search order, so the correct copy usually belongs in that program’s installation folder, not in a global Windows directory. Some public file records show a 32-bit copy with a particular file size and hash, but those records are third-party catalog information, not authoritative release records. Do not use a catalog entry as proof that a downloaded DLL is the correct build.

Cause-by-symptom guide

Preserve the exact wording of the error. “The specified module could not be found” can mean that the named DLL exists but a dependency loaded by it does not.

Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the program that needs it

This is the highest-probability fix because the application selects the compatible DLL, its location, and any supporting files.

First identify the calling program:

1. Read the title bar and full text of the error.
2. Note the executable named in the shortcut or launcher.
3. Right-click the shortcut, select Properties, and inspect Target.
4. Open that program’s folder and search for libsquish.dll.
5. If several GTA tools are installed, launch each from its own folder rather than using a copied executable.

If the program has a built-in repair option:

1. Open Start → Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
2. Find the affected program.
3. Select the three-dot menu.
4. Choose Advanced options.
5. Select Repair, if available.
6. Restart Windows and launch the program again.

For a classic desktop installer:

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter appwiz.cpl and press Enter.
3. Select the affected application.
4. Choose Repair or Change, if the installer offers it.
5. Complete the wizard and restart the program.

If no repair option exists, uninstall the affected tool and reinstall it from the developer’s genuine installer or the complete original archive. Do not delete the program folder first if it contains custom profiles, texture projects, or mod backups. Preserve those files separately, then install a clean copy.

A successful repair restores the DLL beside the program executable and removes the startup error. If the same message returns, the installer may be incomplete, the wrong historical build may have been used, or antivirus software may be removing the file again.

For an old GTA utility with no maintained installer, use the complete package from its genuine distribution source. Do not mix libsquish.dll from one release with executables from another.

Fix 2: Verify a game or launcher-managed installation

If the error belongs to a Steam game or another launcher-managed title, use the launcher’s repair process instead of manually replacing files.

For Steam:

1. Open Steam and select Library.
2. Right-click the affected game.
3. Select Properties.
4. Open Installed Files.
5. Select Verify integrity of game files.
6. Wait for the process to finish, then launch the game again.

If a mod manager or texture utility is responsible, verify the utility itself rather than the game. A game’s file check cannot restore a DLL that belongs to a separate TXD or texture-editing program.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Antivirus protection may remove a DLL after an archive is extracted, after a program update, or when an old modding utility is launched.

1. Open Start and search for Windows Security.
2. Select Virus & threat protection.
3. Under Current threats, select Protection history.
4. Look for an entry naming libsquish.dll or the affected application.
5. Confirm that the file came from the legitimate program package.
6. Scan the original installer or archive before restoring anything.
7. Restore the file only when its source is trusted.
8. Reinstall or repair the application if the file is not offered for restoration.

Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined file can cause Defender to detect it again unless the file or application is explicitly allowed. Follow Microsoft’s guidance for Protection history, and do not create a broad exclusion for an entire Downloads folder.

If the file is repeatedly quarantined, stop launching the tool and obtain a clean, complete package. A filename alone does not establish that a DLL is safe.

Fix 4: Match the application architecture

A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit programs, but a 32-bit DLL and a 64-bit DLL are not interchangeable. Older GTA utilities are often 32-bit, while newer builds of related libraries may be available for both architectures.

Check the program rather than guessing from your Windows edition:

1. Open the application’s installation folder.
2. Right-click its main executable.
3. Select Properties → Details.
4. Check whether the publisher provides architecture information.
5. Review the program’s documentation or installer choices.
6. Restore the DLL supplied with that exact application.

Do not replace an application’s bundled file with a MinGW, MSYS2, or unrelated development-package build. Separate 32-bit and 64-bit packages exist for Squish, but those packages target their own toolchains and are not automatic substitutes for a game utility.

If the error says the DLL is “not designed to run on Windows,” a wrong architecture, truncated archive, damaged file, or DLL from another product is more likely than a damaged Windows installation.

Fix 5: Check dependencies after restoring the DLL

A DLL can be present while Windows still reports that the module cannot be found. In that situation, another library required by libsquish.dll or by the parent executable may be missing.

Start with the application’s own installer and documentation. Repair the program again, then install only prerequisites it explicitly requires. A Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package may be necessary for a particular build, but it does not provide libsquish.dll; use the architecture required by the application. Do not install random runtime bundles from file-download pages. If the error changes after repair and names another DLL, treat that new name as the next dependency to diagnose rather than repeatedly replacing libsquish.dll.

Fix 6: Run Windows component repair

Use Windows component repair only when other Windows programs are also failing, system files are corrupted, or the problem began after a broader system fault. These commands do not download or replace an application-owned libsquish.dll.

1. Open Start.
2. Search for Command Prompt.
3. Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
4. Run:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

1. Wait for it to complete.
2. Then run:

sfc /scannow

Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC in its System File Checker guidance. If both commands complete successfully but the application still reports libsquish.dll, reinstall the application. Windows component repair cannot restore a private DLL that was bundled with a GTA tool.

A graphics driver is not a provider of libsquish.dll, so updating drivers is not a primary fix for this error. Consider it only if the repaired application starts but crashes during texture rendering, or if Device Manager reports a separate display-device problem.

1. Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
2. Expand Display adapters.
3. Right-click the graphics device.
4. Select Update driver → Search automatically for drivers.
5. Restart Windows.
6. If the problem began immediately after a driver update, open Properties → Driver → Roll Back Driver, when available.

Use the graphics-chip vendor’s official driver package when Windows cannot find a suitable update. Do not enable random Windows Features to solve this error. .NET Framework, DirectX, and Visual C++ are separate components, and installing them should be based on the affected application’s documented requirements.

Do not register or download the DLL blindly

regsvr32 is generally not appropriate for libsquish.dll. Microsoft documents it for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, commonly ActiveX or COM components. Squish is a runtime library loaded by an application, not a known COM server. Running this command is unlikely to fix the error:

regsvr32 libsquish.dll

Do not copy the file into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, or a global PATH directory. This can create version conflicts and DLL-preloading risks. Keep the matching copy beside the executable that needs it.

Avoid random DLL download websites as well. A downloaded file may contain malware, use the wrong architecture, have incompatible exports, belong to another build, or hide the real missing dependency. The safe source is the original application’s installer, launcher repair process, or complete package from the software’s genuine distribution channel.

If the error remains

Search the application folder for duplicate copies of libsquish.dll and remove only files you can identify as leftovers from a failed installation. Check the shortcut target again to ensure you are launching the repaired copy rather than an old executable on the desktop.

You can also inspect Event Viewer:

1. Press Windows + R.
2. Enter eventvwr.msc and press Enter.
3. Open Windows Logs → Application.
4. Look for an error at the time of the failed launch.
5. Record the faulting application and any additional module named.

If the error began after moving the program, restore its complete original folder. If it began after extracting a mod archive, extract it again to a new folder with a trusted archive utility. If no legitimate package is available, do not assemble a replacement DLL from unrelated sources.

Is libsquish.dll a Windows file?

No. It is an application DLL associated with the open-source Squish texture-compression library and bundled by programs that use it.

Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?

No. Restore it to the folder containing the application that loads it. System32 and SysWOW64 are not general-purpose DLL storage locations.

Is libsquish.dll only for GTA?
