“The program can’t start because cnbp_288.dll is missing from your computer.” The cnbp_288.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, quarantined, or obsolete Canon printer-driver package rather than a missing Windows runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches your situation:
- You still use a Canon printer: remove the existing printer and reinstall the driver for its exact model and Windows architecture.
- Printing stopped after an update or software change: reinstall the Canon package, then check Windows Update for a compatible driver.
- You no longer own a Canon printer: remove the orphaned Canon printer and driver package.
- Windows Security detected the file: review Protection history before restoring anything.
- The message says “specified module could not be found”: the missing item may be a dependency, not
cnbp_288.dllitself. - The error occurs during startup but printing works: look for an old Canon utility or startup entry that still calls the driver.
- Several Windows components are failing: repair Windows with DISM and SFC, then retry the printer installation.
Do not begin by downloading an individual DLL. The driver package, its INF registration, related files, and architecture must match.

They may also be stored in the Windows Driver Store. Do not assume that cnbp_288.dll belongs directly in System32, and do not manually copy it there.
No single Canon printer model or executable has been confirmed as the universal owner of this filename. The program that installed the printer package is the important clue.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution if you still use a Canon printer.
1. Identify the model and Windows type
Find the printer’s exact model name on its case, control panel, or existing Windows entry.
Then open:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Note System type, such as 64-bit operating system or 32-bit operating system.
- Note the Windows edition and version.
Open Canon’s official support site, search for the exact model, and select a driver that matches the installed Windows version and architecture. Canon may label the package MP Driver, IJ Printer Driver, or use a model-specific name.
Do not select a similar-looking model. Printer drivers can share branding while using different installation packages.
2. Remove the current printer
Before installing the replacement package:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Click Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
After restarting, run Canon’s complete installer. If you prefer Windows’ built-in process, return to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and select Add device. Windows may retrieve a compatible driver through Windows Update.

3. Remove a stale driver package if necessary
If the old driver keeps returning:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Click Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the correct Canon package again.
Do not delete files manually from the spooler directory or Driver Store. Windows must remove the package through its printer-management interfaces.

4. Inspect installed driver packages
To see whether an old Canon package remains:
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers /files
Review the output for Canon entries and the files associated with them. PnPUtil is built into Windows and can enumerate driver packages and their files. The /files option is supported on recent Windows versions.
If you find multiple obsolete Canon packages, remove only the package that is no longer used by a printer. Removing an active package can make the printer unavailable.
Manually comparing driver versions across many packages is time-consuming, especially when Windows lists several similarly named entries. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers and identify what needs attention; its full-version repair and installation features handle the actual updates. It is optional, and the exact Canon model package from Canon remains the safest source for this particular file.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can remove or quarantine a driver file. Check this before copying anything from another computer.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open any detection associated with the Canon driver.
- Check the reported path and file name.
- Restore the file only if you can confirm that it came from the official Canon package and is digitally trusted.
Reinstalling the complete official driver is safer than restoring an isolated DLL. Do not disable antivirus merely to copy cnbp_288.dll. If the Canon installer is repeatedly blocked, submit the installer or detection to the security vendor for review after confirming its source.
If you do not recognize the file’s location or the detection is associated with an unrelated program, leave it quarantined and run a full scan. If malware is suspected, use Microsoft Defender Offline from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.

DISM and SFC will not normally restore a third-party Canon driver file, but they can repair Windows-side corruption that prevents driver installation.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Try Windows Update or the Canon installer again.
Microsoft explains the repair process in its DISM and SFC guidance.
Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing whether Windows or the printer package changed can waste time. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs repair; the full-version repair performs the fixes. It is optional, and it cannot replace the correct Canon driver package.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbp_288.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a second DLL required by the Canon driver.

Check the following:
- Note the exact executable named in the error.
- Open Event Viewer by searching for it in Start.
- Expand Windows Logs.
- Select Application.
- Look for an error at the same time as the failure.
- Record the application or module named in the event.
If the error names a Microsoft runtime DLL, investigate that component separately. Installing Visual C++ redistributables, DirectX, or .NET without a matching error is not a normal fix for cnbp_288.dll.
If only one Canon utility fails while printing works, reinstall that utility or remove it from startup. If the print spooler or multiple printers fail, focus on removing and reinstalling the printer-driver package.
Fix 5: Check Device Manager and architecture
Device Manager may reveal a failed printer or an incompatible driver.

- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers and Print queues.
- Look for the Canon device or a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and select Properties.
- Review the General tab for an error code.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Use Update Driver and select Search automatically for drivers, or install the correct Canon package manually.
A cataloged cnbp_288.dll record may describe a 32-bit build, while another record may be associated with an AMD64 Windows printer package. That does not make either record the correct replacement for every computer. Never substitute a 32-bit DLL for an x64 package or place an x64 file into a 32-bit application directory.
Fix 6: Remove an orphaned Canon driver
If no Canon printer is connected, the error may come from an old printer entry or utility.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Remove unused Canon printers.
- Open Printer server properties.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Remove unused Canon driver packages where Windows permits it.
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl + Shift + Esc.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable an old Canon utility only if you recognize it and no longer need it.
- Restart Windows.
If the message appears during logon, check Task Scheduler for a clearly identified, obsolete Canon task. Do not delete unknown scheduled tasks.

Do not download a standalone DLL
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, or a file from an unrelated driver variant. Even a clean copy may not fix the INF registration, dependencies, spooler configuration, or missing companion files.

Use the exact Canon model support page or Windows Update instead.
Do not run regsvr32 as a general repair
regsvr32 is intended for self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs. A printer-driver component is normally installed through its driver package and INF files.

Running this command is therefore not a standard fix:
regsvr32 cnbp_288.dll
It may produce an “entry point not found” message and will not reconstruct the Canon printer package. Microsoft documents the proper use and troubleshooting of Regsvr32.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsDo not use a registry cleaner
Registry cleaners cannot reliably recreate a printer-driver package and may remove entries needed by other devices. Remove and reinstall the printer through Windows or Canon’s installer.
If the error started after an update
If reinstalling the driver does not help and the problem began immediately after a driver, application, or Windows change:
- Search Start for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Follow the wizard.
- Restart when prompted.
System Restore affects system files, settings, and installed programs, but not personal files. Microsoft’s System Restore instructions explain how to choose an appropriate restore point.
FAQ
Is cnbp_288.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Canon inkjet printer-driver software. Older Windows installations may contain Canon driver packages, but the DLL itself is Canon-authored and should not be treated as a standard Windows component.
Which Canon printer uses cnbp_288.dll?
Public records do not establish one universal Canon model or executable. Identify the installed printer and use its exact official driver package.
Can I fix it by copying the file into System32?
No. Copying a DLL does not install its driver package and can create an architecture mismatch or leave dependencies missing.
Should I install Visual C++ again?
Only if the error also names a Microsoft runtime DLL. Visual C++ packages do not normally restore a Canon printer-driver component.
What if I no longer have a Canon printer?
Remove unused Canon printers and stale Canon packages from Printers & scanners and Printer server properties. Also check startup utilities if the error appears during logon.

What if reinstalling the driver does not work?
Check Protection history, inspect Event Viewer for a dependency error, verify 32-bit versus 64-bit compatibility, run DISM and SFC, and check whether the printer is supported by the current Windows version. If no Canon software remains but the error continues, use the executable named in Event Viewer to locate the stale startup or application reference.
