hpzstw71.dll is an HP LaserJet printer-software file, not a Windows component, so the safest fix is to identify the printer package that requests it and reinstall that package. Do not download the DLL into System32 or SysWOW64; remove the broken HP installation and install the correct driver for your printer and Windows version instead.
What this file actually does
Available file metadata describes hpzstw71.dll as HP LaserJet Generic String Table, associated with Hewlett-Packard Corporation. It appears to be a support resource used by older HP LaserJet printer software or driver packages.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That association comes from third-party file metadata rather than a current, publicly verified HP package manifest. No specific HP printer model can therefore be confirmed as the universal owner of this file. The exact version, file size, architecture, and installation path may also differ between packages.
The file is not supplied as a normal Windows system DLL. It is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, or .NET file. A message naming it usually means that an HP printer utility, print driver, installer, or leftover startup entry is trying to load software that is missing, damaged, incompatible, or blocked.

Find the cause from the symptom
| When the error appears | Most likely explanation | Best first action |
|---|---|---|
| During Windows startup | An old HP utility or printer monitor still launches | Remove unused HP software or its obsolete printer |
| When opening printer properties | The installed driver package is incomplete or incompatible | Remove the printer and driver, then reinstall |
| When printing | The print processor, driver, or dependency is damaged | Reinstall the model-specific HP driver |
| After uninstalling an HP printer | A stale driver or startup component remains | Remove the old driver from Print server properties |
| After a Windows upgrade | A legacy driver no longer loads correctly | Install an HP package intended for the current Windows version |
| After antivirus activity | The DLL or a dependency may have been quarantined | Check quarantine, then repair or reinstall HP software |
| After restoring an old disk image | The driver no longer matches the current Windows installation | Rebuild the printer installation from HP |
| With a different-looking filename | The message may concern another HP DLL | Check the spelling exactly before changing anything |
Also confirm whether the printer still exists under Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners. On older Windows interfaces, check Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact HP printer package
This is the most likely solution.
- Write down the exact printer model shown on the printer, its label, or the existing Windows printer entry.
- Open HP’s Software and Driver Downloads page.
- Enter the complete printer model, not just “HP LaserJet.”
- Select the Windows version installed on the computer.
- Download the offered full software package or printer-specific driver.
- If HP offers several packages, prefer the model-specific package. Do not replace it with a generic DLL.
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable temporarily if the installer tells you to do so.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Approve the administrator prompt and follow the connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when installation completes.
- Print a test page from Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners > your printer > Printer properties.
A successful repair normally means the startup message disappears, printer properties open normally, and the test page prints. If the installer reports that the printer already exists, remove the old entry using the cleanup steps below before running the installer again.
HP’s Universal Print Driver supports multiple LaserJet models and has PCL 6, PCL 5, and PostScript variants. It is mainly intended for managed or multi-printer environments, so use it only when HP’s guidance or your organization requires it. For a home or single-printer installation, the model-specific package is usually the better match.
When manually hunting through several driver packages and guessing which one matches an old printer becomes difficult, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation requires the full version. For this file, however, reinstalling the exact HP printer package remains the definitive fix.
Fix 2: Remove the printer and stale HP driver
Reinstalling over a damaged driver can leave the same broken files behind. Remove the old installation first.
Remove the printer in Settings
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected HP printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Remove old HP software
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps or Apps & features.
- Search for HP entries related to the printer, such as an HP printer assistant, imaging utility, or older setup program.
- Select the relevant entry, choose Uninstall, and restart when prompted.
Do not remove unrelated HP software if you cannot establish that it belongs to the affected printer.

Remove the driver package
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Hardware and Sound.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Click any printer once so the printer toolbar appears.
- Select Print server properties.
- Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete HP driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Confirm, then restart Windows.
Windows may refuse to remove a driver while a print job or service is using it. Cancel pending jobs, close printer software, restart, and try again. If the printer is still in use, remove the printer entry first and repeat the driver removal.
After restarting, reinstall the driver from HP. Do not copy a DLL from another computer or from a different HP printer family.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and file authenticity
Security software may quarantine a printer component, but a filename alone does not prove that a file is genuine.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry mentioning
hpzstw71.dll, the HP installer, or the printer software. - Check the original path, detection details, and publisher information.
- Restore the file only if it clearly came from a legitimate HP installation and the security product confirms the detection was incorrect.
- Reinstall or update the HP package afterward rather than relying on the restored file alone.
If the file appears in a suspicious user-writable folder, has no credible HP signature, or is detected as malware, do not restore it. Run a full Microsoft Defender scan:
Recommended Free Tools
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
If malware is found, remove it and rebuild the printer software from HP’s official installer.
Fix 4: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
A reported catalogued copy of this file is 32-bit, but that does not mean every HP package uses the same build. A 32-bit printer application can load 32-bit components on 64-bit Windows through Windows’ compatibility layers. Copying a 64-bit replacement into that application, or placing a 32-bit file in a system directory, is unsafe.

Check your Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type.
Then download the driver offered for that Windows version and printer model. Do not manually place the file in both C:WindowsSystem32 and C:WindowsSysWOW64. These directories serve different architecture roles despite their confusing names.
If the printer is old and HP no longer offers a current package, check whether Windows provides a compatible class driver:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- If Windows does not find the printer, choose Add manually.
- Select the appropriate connection method.
- Allow Windows Update to populate available printer drivers.
- Select the closest verified model only when Windows or HP identifies it as compatible.
A class driver may restore basic printing but not every scanning, status-monitoring, or finishing feature.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows is also failing
DISM and SFC repair Windows components. They do not normally restore a third-party HP printer DLL, so use them when several Windows features are malfunctioning, Windows reports broader corruption, or the HP installer itself fails unexpectedly.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, retry the HP installation. If both commands report no integrity violations but the DLL error remains, return to the HP driver cleanup rather than repeating the commands.
If repeatedly running SFC and DISM leaves you unsure what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can show detected system issues in its free scan, while repair requires the full version; it is optional, and reinstalling the HP software remains the correct fix for this printer-specific DLL.

Do not register this DLL with regsvr32
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. Resource and driver-support files commonly do not provide that interface. hpzstw71.dll should not be registered as a routine missing-DLL remedy.

Running this command:
regsvr32 hpzstw71.dll
may produce:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not prove that Windows is damaged. It usually means registration does not apply to the file.
Likewise, installing Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not the default fix. Install a Microsoft runtime only when the error names that runtime or the HP installer explicitly reports it as a prerequisite.

If the printer is no longer used and the error appears only when Windows starts, restoring the DLL is unnecessary.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an old HP printer assistant, monitor, status utility, or setup entry.
- Select it and choose Disable.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Uninstall the related HP software if it is no longer needed.
- Restart Windows.
If the message continues, search Event Viewer for the exact executable requesting the DLL:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > Application.
- Look for an error recorded at the same time as the popup.
- Record the application path and filename.
The executable path can distinguish a remaining HP utility from an unrelated program or a suspicious file.
Final checks
After repair, verify all of the following:
- The exact printer model appears in Printers & scanners.
- Printer properties open without the DLL message.
- A Windows test page prints.
- The HP application, if required, opens normally.
- No antivirus alert returns.
- The error does not reappear after a restart.
If a clean HP reinstall still fails, check whether the message actually names hpzstw72.dll, hpzssw71.dll, or hpzsew71.dll. Similar filenames belong to different components. Also consider that a dependency of hpzstw71.dll may be missing.

FAQ
Is hpzstw71.dll part of Windows?
No evidence establishes it as a Windows component. Treat it as a file installed by HP printer software.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Which HP printer installed it?
No specific printer model has been definitively established from the available public information. Identify the printer or HP utility that was installed on the affected computer and use that model’s official package.
Can I download the DLL separately?
Avoid random DLL download sites. A download may contain malware, the wrong architecture, or a build that does not match the driver, and it may not include the missing dependency. Reinstall the complete HP package instead.
Should I copy it to System32?
No. System-folder copying can create architecture conflicts and does not repair the driver registration, dependencies, or startup configuration.
Why does the error say the specified module cannot be found when the file exists?
Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by the named DLL. Check the complete driver package and reinstall it rather than replacing only the visible file.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?

Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not ordinary third-party HP driver files.
What if the printer is no longer connected?
Remove the obsolete HP software, printer entry, and stale driver. If the error appears at startup, disabling or uninstalling the leftover HP utility is more appropriate than restoring the DLL.
