- System type: open Settings → System → About and check System type for 64-bit or 32-bit Windows

The exact message may say that cnbp_302.dll is missing, was not found, could not be loaded, or is not designed to run on Windows. “Not designed to run on Windows” does not by itself indicate malware. It can result from corruption, an incompatible architecture, or a damaged driver installation.

Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon driver

3. Remove the damaged Canon software if necessary

- Search for the Canon printer software.
- Select its More menu and choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
On Windows 10, use Settings → Apps → Apps & features, select the Canon software, and choose Uninstall.
You can also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features for older Canon entries. Do not remove every printer driver blindly if multiple Canon printers are in use. First confirm that the current model’s installer is available.
4. Install the fresh package
- Extract the downloaded Canon package if it is compressed.
- Open the extracted folder.
- Right-click
Setup.exeand select Run as administrator. - Follow the installer prompts.
- Connect or turn on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation completes.
Canon’s installation process commonly uses an extracted Setup.exe. Installing the complete package allows Windows to place all associated files in the correct driver locations and register the printer properly.
5. Test the result
Return to the printer list and select the Canon printer. Choose Print a test page, or open a small document and print it.

The repair worked if:
- The original error no longer appears
- The Canon utility opens normally
- The printer is listed without an error status
- A test page prints successfully
If the same message appears immediately after reinstalling, continue with the driver and architecture checks below instead of downloading a loose DLL.
Fix 2: Update or reinstall the printer driver through Windows
Windows Update may offer a compatible printer driver, particularly if the old Canon package was removed during an update.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.

- Select a Canon or printer-related update.

Device Manager can reveal whether Windows sees a broken or incomplete printer installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and, if present, Other devices.
- Look for the Canon printer or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected entry and choose Properties.
- Read the Device status message on the General tab.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider, date, and version.
Try Update Driver → Search automatically for drivers. If Windows reports that the best driver is already installed but the error continues, use the Canon installer rather than repeatedly selecting the same automatic option.
For a clearly damaged printer entry:
- Right-click the affected printer in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers a checkbox to remove the driver package, select it only when you are sure the package belongs to the obsolete or damaged printer.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the current Canon package.
Do not remove a working driver for another printer unless you know which package it uses.
Fix 4: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can quarantine a driver component. Do not restore a file merely because its name appears in an error.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item associated with the Canon installer or printer package.
- Restore it only if you have confirmed that it came from the official Canon installer and the system is otherwise clean.
Microsoft warns that restoring a quarantined item can make a detected threat active again. If the file was quarantined, reinstall the Canon package from its official source after checking the system. A clean installation is safer than restoring an isolated DLL and leaving the package incomplete.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself is malfunctioning, system files are damaged, or the problem began alongside broader component errors. They do not reliably reconstruct a missing Canon printer-driver package.
First install pending Windows updates and restart. Then:
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for it to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
DISM should run before SFC. Restart Windows when both commands complete and test the printer again.

SFC may report that it found and repaired corrupted files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair some files. Even a successful SFC repair does not prove that cnbp_302.dll has been restored, because this file belongs to a Canon driver package rather than being a standard protected Windows component.

Public third-party records describe a 32-bit listing for this filename, but public records conflict about its size, hashes, and Windows association. Those records are clues, not authoritative Canon release information.
Do not download a generic 64-bit replacement because your Windows installation is 64-bit. A 64-bit version of Windows can run some 32-bit printer software, but the correct architecture depends on the Canon package and the application or driver environment.

- Open Settings.
- Select System → About.
- Read System type.
- Return to the Canon support page.
- Select the package that matches your Windows release and the options Canon provides for that model.
If the printer is old, the latest package may not support your current Windows version. Avoid forcing a random legacy DLL into a newer driver. Instead, use the Canon installer, Windows’ available printer driver, or a supported replacement driver for the exact model.

regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It does not repair an ordinary printer-driver dependency.
Running:
regsvr32 cnbp_302.dll
may produce an error saying that the entry point was not found. That result does not mean the file needs a different copy. Unless Canon’s documentation specifically instructs you to register this component, do not use regsvr32 for it.
Similarly, do not try to repair this error by enabling random Windows Features. Windows Features can restore optional Microsoft components, but they do not reinstall the Canon printer package. Only use Control Panel → Programs → Turn Windows features on or off when the error explicitly identifies a Windows feature or framework that you know is disabled.
Avoid standalone DLL downloads
Do not download cnbp_302.dll from a random DLL website and copy it into System32, SysWOW64, the Canon folder, or the application folder.
A loose file may have:
- The wrong architecture
- The wrong Canon package version
- Missing dependencies

Check Event Viewer by right-clicking Start, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs → Application around the time of the error. Canon installer logs may also identify a failed package step.
If the problem began immediately after a driver change:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Choose Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Complete System Restore only if the restore point matches the timing of the problem.
The printer may also work with Windows’ supported IPP or class driver without the old Canon utility. If printing and scanning work normally, removing an obsolete Canon utility may be reasonable, but do not remove it until you know which printer functions depend on it.
