If Windows reports assemblycsharp.dll missing, it usually means the Unity game or application that supplied Assembly-CSharp.dll is damaged, modified, incomplete or being launched from the wrong folder. The file is not a Windows system DLL, a universal Unity download or a component you should fetch separately.

Close the game, launcher and mod loader, then use the launcher’s Repair, Scan, or Verify files function. If the game is installed through Steam:
#1 Best Overall
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Click Verify integrity of game files.
Start the game again after verification finishes. If it works, the launcher restored the exact copy intended for that game.
If verification does not help, remove mods and custom loaders, check Windows Security’s quarantine history, and reinstall the game from its official store or installer. Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website.
What assemblycsharp.dll actually is
The canonical Unity filename is Assembly-CSharp.dll, with capital letters and hyphens. Search results, error messages and mod tools sometimes normalize it to assemblycsharp.dll, but that does not normally indicate a separate file.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnity commonly compiles a project’s ordinary C# scripts into a managed assembly named Assembly-CSharp.dll. In a Windows game installation, it is commonly located at:
<GameName>_DataManagedAssembly-CSharp.dll
The exact packaging can vary. The important point is that this assembly belongs to a particular game or application. It contains that project’s compiled code, not Windows functionality. Its contents must match the game’s executable, Unity player files, other managed assemblies and, where applicable, its mod loader.
That is why there is no universal correct version, publisher, file size or architecture to download. A copy from another Unity game can be perfectly genuine and still be completely wrong for your installation.
First identify what is trying to load it
Before changing files, find the program named in the error and note the full path.
Check these details:
- The game or application name
- The executable that starts it
- The launcher, such as Steam or another official installer
- The complete error text
- The folder containing the executable
- Whether the path includes a folder ending in
_DataManaged - Whether the problem began after a game update, mod installation, antivirus alert, cleanup operation or interrupted installation
If the error comes from a mod loader, the loader may be targeting a specific game version rather than reporting a broken Windows installation. If the error comes from Unity while developing your own project, use the developer steps below instead of reinstalling a retail game.
Fix 1: Repair or verify the game installation
This is the safest and most likely fix for a shipped Unity game. Verification compares the installed files with the launcher’s known files and restores missing or changed files from the official distribution.

Steam
Use:
- Steam → Library.
- Right-click the game.
- Select Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files.
Steam may report that some local configuration files could not be validated. That is not automatically a failure because settings and user-created files may intentionally differ from the original installation.
Other launchers
Open the game’s page or library entry and look for a control named Repair, Verify, Scan and Repair, or Validate. The wording differs between launchers, but the purpose is the same.
Recommended Free Tools
Do not run the game while repair is in progress. Afterward, restart the launcher and test the game without mods.
Standalone installer
If the program came from a publisher’s installer:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Select the application if a Repair option is available.
- If no repair option exists, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Install it again using the official installer.
- Choose a clean folder rather than reusing a directory full of old mods.
If the installer offers Run as administrator, use that only for the installer when Windows denies access to the destination folder. It does not make an incompatible Assembly-CSharp.dll compatible.
Fix 2: Remove mods and check for a version mismatch
A mod loader may patch, replace or inspect Assembly-CSharp.dll. Game updates can invalidate those changes even when the unmodified game is healthy.
To test this:
- Exit the game and its launcher.
- Disable or remove the mod loader and installed mods according to their developer’s instructions.
- Restore the original game files with the launcher’s verification function.
- Start the unmodified game.
- If it works, reinstall only mods that explicitly support your current game version.
Do not copy Assembly-CSharp.dll from a different game, an older backup or another Unity project unless it is an exact backup of the same game build. Even a file with the same name can contain different classes and references, causing type-load errors, crashes or further startup failures.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a modified game assembly, particularly after installing unofficial mods or an unofficial build.
In Windows 10 or Windows 11:
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review entries matching the game folder, executable or
Assembly-CSharp.dll. - Do not restore the file automatically.
- Confirm that the game came from a trustworthy official source and that the detection is a false positive before choosing Restore or Allow on device.
Microsoft documents Protection History and its restore and allow actions here.
For a legitimate installation, repairing or reinstalling from the official launcher is usually safer than allowing a quarantined modified file. If the same file is repeatedly quarantined, leave it removed and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly overriding security software.
Fix 4: Check whether the file exists but cannot load
A present file is not necessarily a usable file. It may be truncated, blocked, modified, incompatible with the game version or located in a different directory from the one the executable is using.
In File Explorer, open the game directory and look for a path similar to:
GameName
GameName.exe
GameName_Data
GameName_DataManaged
GameName_DataManagedAssembly-CSharp.dll
If the file is missing, verify or reinstall the game.
If it exists:
- Right-click it and select Properties.
- On the General tab, look for an Unblock checkbox.
- Only use Unblock if the file came from a trusted official installer or verified backup.
- Click Apply, then OK.
- Verify the game files anyway.
Do not use the file’s apparent size or date as proof that it is correct. There is no universal size or version for this assembly.
Fix 5: Determine whether the game uses Mono or IL2CPP
Not every Unity game ships a usable Assembly-CSharp.dll.
Mono-based games commonly keep managed assemblies in the game’s _DataManaged directory. IL2CPP builds can transform managed code into native code during the build process. Such games may not contain a normal usable Assembly-CSharp.dll, or may contain metadata or stub assemblies instead.
If the game is IL2CPP-based, adding an Assembly-CSharp.dll downloaded elsewhere is not a repair. The actual problem may involve GameAssembly.dll, UnityPlayer.dll, metadata, a missing native dependency or a mod loader that does not support that game.
Use the official game repair process first. If a mod loader reports the missing file, check that loader’s documentation for IL2CPP support and the exact supported game build.

Fix 6: Read the complete dependency error
Sometimes Assembly-CSharp.dll is mentioned even though the real missing component is another file. Look for a separate filename in the full error, such as:
UnityPlayer.dllGameAssembly.dll- A Visual C++ runtime DLL
- A DirectX component
- A graphics-driver component
Do not install Visual C++ or DirectX merely because a Unity assembly is named. Install a prerequisite only when the complete error identifies it and obtain it from the relevant official Microsoft or game source.
For a Visual C++ runtime error, use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Choose the architecture required by the application. The game’s player architecture matters more than the name of the managed assembly.
Fix 7: Update the graphics driver only when the evidence points there
A graphics-driver problem normally produces rendering, device initialization or UnityPlayer.dll errors, not a missing managed assembly. Update the driver when the complete error or crash pattern identifies the graphics stack.

Use the GPU manufacturer’s official support page or Windows:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
If Windows cannot find a suitable driver, use the manufacturer’s official driver package and select the correct Windows architecture. Do not replace Assembly-CSharp.dll as a substitute for a graphics-driver repair.
Manually hunting through driver versions can mean guessing which of several packages is stale and repeating the process after every update. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan to show what it identifies, while driver installation is handled by the full version; it is optional, and the game’s official reinstall remains the definitive fix for its own assembly.
Fix 8: Repair a Unity development project
If you are building the project rather than running a retail game, Assembly-CSharp.dll may not be generated because the scripts do not compile.

A custom assembly definition changes which scripts are compiled together. A broken reference can therefore prevent the expected assembly from being created even though the source files are present.

Windows repair commands do not recreate a game-specific Assembly-CSharp.dll. Use them when several unrelated applications report damaged system components, Windows itself behaves abnormally, or the evidence points to component-store corruption.

cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:

Wait for it to finish, then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows and test the game again. Microsoft recommends the DISM-then-SFC sequence for Windows image and protected system-file problems. See Microsoft’s DISM repair guidance and System File Checker reference.
Do not expect SFC or DISM to restore a third-party game assembly. If only one game fails, repair that game instead.

Why regsvr32 is usually wrong
Do not run:
regsvr32 Assembly-CSharp.dll
regsvr32 is intended for registering certain OLE and ActiveX components that expose a self-registration entry point. Assembly-CSharp.dll is normally a managed application assembly, not a self-registering COM control. The command can produce a missing DllRegisterServer error and does not repair the game.
Microsoft explains the tool’s purpose and limitations here.
32-bit and 64-bit questions
There are not normally separate generic 32-bit and 64-bit downloads of Assembly-CSharp.dll. The managed file belongs to the specific game build. The game executable, native Unity player, native dependencies and selected platform target determine compatibility.

FAQ
Is assemblycsharp.dll a Windows file?
No. It is usually a reference to Unity’s game-specific Assembly-CSharp.dll, commonly stored beneath the game’s _DataManaged folder.
Can I download the missing DLL?
Do not use random DLL download sites. The file may contain malicious code, belong to another game, target another build or fail to fix the underlying installation problem. Use the game launcher’s repair function or its official installer.
Why did verification not restore it?
Mods may still be changing the file, antivirus software may be quarantining it, the launcher may be pointed at another installation, or the game may not use a normal Mono assembly. Remove mods, inspect Protection History and perform a clean official reinstall.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I install Visual C++?
Only if the complete error names a Visual C++ runtime or another native dependency. Assembly-CSharp.dll itself is not the Visual C++ runtime.
What should I provide when asking for help?
Include the exact error text, full executable path, game version, launcher, whether the game is Mono or IL2CPP if known, recent mod or update changes, Windows Security detections, and whether verification replaced any files.
