The most reliable destination is a complete driver installed through Windows Update or Canon’s official support system for the exact printer model. Microsoft recommends Windows Update first when looking for printer drivers.

Fix 1: Remove and reinstall the exact Canon printer driver
This is the most likely solution because cnbp_309.dll belongs to a driver package, not a standalone application.
1. Record the printer model
Look at the printer itself, its original packaging, or the existing Windows entry. Record the complete model name, including suffixes such as “TS,” “MG,” “TR,” or regional model numbers.
Do not select a similar Canon model. A related printer can use a different driver package and different supporting files.

2. Remove the printer
On Windows 11:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
On Windows 10:
- Open Settings.
- Select Devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove device.
Restart Windows after removing it.
3. Remove an old driver package if it remains
Press Windows + R, type printui.exe /s /t2, and press Enter. The Print Server Properties window opens on the Drivers tab.
Look for a Canon driver matching the removed printer. Select it, choose Remove, then select Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that choice.
If Windows says the driver is in use, clear pending print jobs first:
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select the printer, if it is still listed.
- Open the print queue.
- Cancel every pending document.
- Restart Windows and repeat the driver-removal step.
Do not remove unrelated printer drivers unless you know they are obsolete.
4. Install the replacement
First try Windows Update:
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options > Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates, if present.
- Install a Canon printer driver that matches your model.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows Update does not provide the driver, obtain the package from Canon’s official support site. Select the exact model, Windows version, and system architecture before downloading. Run the installer only after disconnecting and reconnecting the printer as its instructions require.

Finish by opening Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, selecting Add device, and printing a test page.
A successful repair means the printer installs without the DLL message, appears under the correct model name, and completes a test page. If the same error returns immediately, the wrong package, wrong architecture, or an old driver left in the system is more likely than a missing standalone DLL.

Fix 2: Check 32-bit, 64-bit, and Windows compatibility
A 32-bit cnbp_309.dll must not be substituted for an x64 driver component. The operating system and the printer package must be compatible with each other.

Then return to the Canon driver selection page and choose the matching Windows release and architecture.

The printer can remain visible in Settings even when its underlying package is damaged. Confirm whether Windows still has a usable driver.
Open an elevated Command Prompt:
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
pnputil /enum-drivers
Review the output for Canon entries and related printer packages. Do not delete a package merely because it contains an unfamiliar filename. First remove the printer through Settings, then remove only the clearly obsolete Canon package using the published Published Name, for example:
pnputil /delete-driver oem##.inf /uninstall
Replace oem##.inf with the actual published name shown on your computer. If Windows reports that the package is in use, restart and remove the printer queue before trying again.

A successful cleanup leaves no stale Canon package for the removed device. Reinstall the current driver afterward. Do not manually browse DriverStore and delete files from it.
Fix 4: Inspect antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a driver file, particularly if the package is old or damaged. This is a possible cause, not proof that the file is malicious.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a Canon printer-driver detection.
- Check the original file path, detection reason, and publisher information.
Restore a quarantined file only when the path belongs to a known Canon driver installation and the package came from Canon or Windows Update. Otherwise, leave it quarantined, remove the old printer package, and reinstall the driver from an official source.
If the file appeared in a temporary folder, a user profile directory, or an unrelated application folder, run a full Windows Security scan before reinstalling anything.

Use these commands when Windows Update is failing, several Windows components are corrupted, or SFC has reported protected-file problems. They are secondary for this error because SFC does not normally restore a third-party Canon driver that was uninstalled.
Open Command Prompt as administrator and run DISM first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish, then reinstall the Canon printer driver.
SFC may report that it found and repaired files, found no integrity violations, or could not repair everything. If DISM fails, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the DISM command again. Microsoft’s official system-file guidance documents this repair sequence.

Repeating SFC will not recreate a missing Canon package. If both commands complete successfully but cnbp_309.dll is still reported, return to the driver-removal and reinstall steps.

Fix 6: Repair a failed update or recent driver change
If the error began immediately after Windows Update or a Canon driver update, reinstall the printer driver first. If a device driver is listed in Device Manager, Windows may also allow a rollback.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Imaging devices.
- Right-click the Canon device.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Driver tab.
- Select Roll Back Driver if it is available.
- Restart Windows.
If rollback is unavailable:
- Right-click the Canon device in Device Manager.
- Select Uninstall device.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the correct driver through Windows Update or Canon.
Do not uninstall unrelated devices while troubleshooting the printer.

Random DLL download websites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, a mismatched version, or a file with no relationship to the driver currently installed. Copying cnbp_309.dll into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 can also create conflicts and bypass normal driver servicing.
A “module not found” message may refer to a dependency required by the named DLL. Replacing only the visible filename therefore may not change the error.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer; there is no verified evidence that this printer-driver DLL should be registered manually. A 32-bit or 64-bit regsvr32 workaround is not appropriate for an ordinary printer-driver binary.
Windows Features are also unlikely to help. Enabling .NET, DirectPlay, or other optional components does not restore a Canon printer package, and reinstalling Visual C++ or DirectX is usually irrelevant.
If Canon no longer provides a compatible driver
For an older printer:
- Remove the damaged printer entry.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Allow Windows to search for a compatible driver.
- Check Windows Update for optional driver updates.
- Test printing with the Windows-provided class driver.
A class driver may support basic printing but not scanning, maintenance tools, borderless options, or other model-specific features. Compatibility can be especially limited on ARM Windows.
System Restore is reasonable only when the printer worked previously and a suitable restore point exists. It should not be the first response to a missing driver DLL.
