Start with this quick check
Before replacing anything, note:
- Which program or game fails:
mfcm140.dllalone does not identify the application. - When the error appears: at launch, after an update, after antivirus activity, or after moving the program.
- The exact message: “missing,” “was not found,” “not designed to run on Windows,” or error
0xc000007b. - The application architecture: 32-bit or 64-bit, if the developer documents it.
- Whether other programs fail: one affected app points toward its installation; several affected apps point more strongly toward the Visual C++ runtime.
- Any recent quarantine event: antivirus protection history may explain why the file disappeared.
The safest first repair is the official Microsoft Visual C++ v14 Redistributable, followed by repair or reinstall of the application that reported the error.
What is mfcm140.dll?
mfcm140.dll is associated with Microsoft Foundation Classes, or MFC, the native C++ framework used by applications built with Microsoft Visual C++. Its public file description is “MFC Managed Library – Retail Version.” “Managed” here is a file description and does not mean that mfcm140.dll is a .NET Framework component.
Microsoft documents the related MFC 14.x runtime files as part of the MFC library. They can be deployed through the Visual C++ Redistributable or placed in an application’s own directory when a program uses private runtime files. The file is therefore not a standalone Windows feature, DirectX component, or game file in the usual sense. It normally arrives because an application installer deployed the Microsoft runtime it needs.
The filename also does not prove that the file itself is the only problem. MFC depends on other runtime components, including files such as vcruntime140.dll, msvcp140.dll, and Universal CRT components. If installing the runtime changes the error to one of those names, repair the dependency named in the new message.

Fix 1: Install or repair Microsoft Visual C++
Microsoft’s current v14 Redistributable supports applications built with Visual Studio 2017 and later and remains binary-compatible with the Visual Studio 2015-era runtime family. This is the appropriate starting point instead of searching for an individual DLL.
Use Microsoft’s latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. The direct installers are also available for x64, x86, and ARM64.
Choose the correct architecture
- A 64-bit application needs the x64 package.
- A 32-bit application needs the x86 package.
- On 64-bit Windows, install both x64 and x86 when you do not know which type of program is failing or when both 32-bit and 64-bit applications are affected.
- ARM64 Windows may require the ARM64 package, depending on the application.
Installing x64 alone does not satisfy a 32-bit application. This is one of the most common reasons a seemingly successful repair changes nothing.
Repair an existing package
- Close the affected program.
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Search for Microsoft Visual C++ 2015–2022 Redistributable or the current equivalent.
- Open its three-dot menu.
- Choose Modify or Change.
- Select Repair and allow the installer to finish.
- Repeat for the x86 package if it is installed.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the affected program again.
If Repair is unavailable or fails, download a fresh installer from Microsoft, right-click it, select Run as administrator, and complete the installation. Install pending Windows updates, restart, and try again if the installer reports that setup could not continue.

vc_redist.x64.exe /repair
vc_redist.x64.exe /install /passive /norestart
Use the corresponding x86 filename for the 32-bit package. The installer should complete without an error, and the application should launch without the original message. Do not remove every older Visual C++ package afterward. Several versions can legitimately coexist because older applications may depend on older toolsets.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the affected application
If only one program fails, its private copy of the MFC runtime may be missing or damaged. Windows can search the application directory before system directories, so a broken file beside the program can continue to cause an error even after the shared runtime is repaired.
Try the application’s own repair option first:
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find the failing application.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Launch the program and check whether the error is gone.
- If Repair does not help, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you understand that it may remove application data or settings.
For a traditional desktop program, open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, select the application, and look for Repair or Change.

If the program still fails, uninstall it, restart Windows, download its installer from the developer’s official source, and reinstall it. This is especially important when the application was moved manually, restored from a backup, or updated incompletely. Reinstalling the application remains the definitive fix when it owns an application-local copy of mfcm140.dll.

For Steam, Epic, and other game launchers
Use the launcher’s verification feature before removing the whole game.
Look for a command named Verify, Verify integrity, Repair, or Scan and repair in the game’s management menu. Let the launcher replace missing or damaged files, then restart the launcher and try the game again. If verification repeatedly reports damaged files, reinstall the game or contact its developer with the launcher’s repair log.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Security software can quarantine a runtime file after an update or after the application changes. Do not immediately download a replacement DLL.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an event involving the affected application or
mfcm140.dll. - Confirm the original file path and publisher before taking action.
Restore a quarantined file only when the application and its installer are trusted. Then repair or reinstall the application and run a security scan. If third-party antivirus software is installed, open its quarantine or history panel instead.

If the file was quarantined from an application directory, repairing the Visual C++ package may not restore that private copy. Repair or reinstall the application after resolving the quarantine event.
Fix 4: Check the application’s architecture and file location
System32 and SysWOW64 have confusing names:
- On 64-bit Windows,
System32is used for 64-bit system-directory binaries. SysWOW64is used for 32-bit binaries.
An application may instead load mfcm140.dll from its own installation directory. The correct location depends on Windows architecture, the application’s architecture, the installed runtime, and the developer’s deployment model.

To inspect the failing program:
- Right-click its shortcut and select Open file location.
- Look in the folder containing the program’s executable.
- Do not replace files there manually.
- Check the application’s documentation or contact its developer if it requires a private runtime deployment.
A 32-bit program on 64-bit Windows still needs the x86 Visual C++ package. If the program is 64-bit, install or repair x64. Error 0xc000007b often indicates an architecture mismatch or another invalid dependency, not simply a missing filename.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when Windows corruption is plausible
SFC and DISM are useful when protected Windows files or the Windows component store are damaged. They are unlikely to restore an application-local copy of mfcm140.dll.

- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the affected application.
Run the commands separately and in that order. DISM repairs the component store; SFC checks protected Windows files afterward. If both complete successfully but one application still reports mfcm140.dll, return to the application repair or reinstall step.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without checking the application directory rarely solves a broken private deployment. Fix 6: Update the application and relevant drivers
An application update may correct an incomplete runtime deployment. Open the program’s built-in update screen or download its latest installer from the developer’s official source. For a game, update the launcher and verify the game files afterward.
Drivers are not the normal cause of a missing MFC runtime, but driver changes can expose launch failures involving graphics, audio, or hardware acceleration. Update only through Windows Update, the hardware manufacturer, or the computer manufacturer.
To check Windows’ driver status:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Display adapters.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not use Device Manager to replace mfcm140.dll; it cannot repair application runtimes. Why not download mfcm140.dll by itself?
Avoid DLL download sites websites and copied files from another PC. A standalone file can be:

- From an incompatible Visual C++ build.
- Missing a dependency of its own.
- Modified or unsafe.
- Placed where it causes DLL hijacking or version conflicts.
Copying a 64-bit file into a 32-bit program folder can produce 0xc000007b. Copying from System32 to an application folder can also make the program load an inappropriate version. Use Microsoft’s Redistributable installer or the application’s official installer instead.
regsvr32 mfcm140.dll is also generally irrelevant. MFC runtime DLLs are not normally repaired by COM registration, and registration does not install their dependencies or fix an architecture mismatch. Use regsvr32 only when the application’s developer specifically tells you to register a particular COM component.
FAQ
Is mfcm140.dll part of Windows?
It is associated with Microsoft’s MFC and Visual C++ runtime ecosystem, but it is not a standalone Windows feature. It may be installed by an application, by the Visual C++ Redistributable, or in an application-local directory.
Is mfcm140.dll a .NET, DirectX, or game file?
No. The “Managed Library” wording is the file description and does not prove that .NET Framework is required. The filename is also not evidence that DirectX is involved.
Should I install Visual C++ 2015, 2015–2019, or 2015–2022?
Use Microsoft’s current v14 Redistributable. It is intended for later Visual Studio builds and is compatible with the Visual Studio 2015-era runtime family. Keep older packages installed when existing applications use them.

Because a 32-bit application requires the x86 runtime. Windows being 64-bit does not change the architecture of the application.
What if the message names vcruntime140.dll or msvcp140.dll instead?
Repair or install the same appropriate Visual C++ architecture, then follow the filename in the new error. The visible mfcm140.dll message may have been only the first missing dependency.
What information should I collect if nothing works?
Record the application name, exact error text, executable architecture, reported file path, installed Visual C++ package names, installer results, and antivirus protection history. Include whether another application fails and whether launcher verification found damaged files. That information will distinguish a shared runtime problem from a broken application installation.
