cnbp_331.dll may appear in messages such as “The program can’t start because cnbp_331.dll is missing from your computer” or “The specified module could not be found.” You may also see “Error loading cnbp_331.dll” or “The code execution cannot proceed because cnbp_331.dll was not found.”
The 60-second answer
cnbp_331.dll is associated with a Canon inkjet printer driver, not a normal Windows component. The safest fix is to identify the Canon printer installed on the computer and reinstall its exact driver package from Canon’s official support service.

Do not download the DLL by itself or copy it into System32 or SysWOW64. A loose file can be the wrong version, the wrong architecture, corrupted, or missing dependencies. Reinstalling the complete driver restores the files, services, configuration, and printer registration that Windows needs.
If you no longer use the Canon printer, remove its old driver and check whether a stale startup entry or utility is still trying to load the file.

What is cnbp_331.dll?
Public file records identify cnbp_331.dll as a Canon Inkjet Printer Driver component. Those records associate it with CANON INC. and describe it as a 32-bit DLL. One public record lists version 0.3.1536.1 and a size of approximately 730 KB, but these are database observations rather than a universal Canon specification.
There is no verified evidence that this file is part of Windows, DirectX, .NET, Visual C++, or a game runtime. No single Canon printer model has been publicly confirmed as the universal owner of this file.
The file may be stored inside a Canon driver package or driver-store location rather than a Windows system directory. The exact location depends on the printer, driver package, Windows architecture, and installation method.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWhy the error appears
The most likely causes are:
- An incomplete or damaged Canon driver installation
- A Canon driver update that left old and new files inconsistent
- A Windows upgrade that disrupted a legacy printer package
- Windows Security quarantining the file
- A 32-bit or incompatible driver being used incorrectly
- A missing dependency required by the Canon component
- A stale Canon utility or startup entry after the printer was removed
- Corrupted Windows components affecting driver installation
- An obsolete printer for which Canon no longer supplies a compatible driver
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbp_331.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when a dependency used by the DLL cannot be loaded. The file can also exist but be blocked, damaged, incompatible, or the wrong version.
Fix 1: Identify the Canon printer and reinstall its driver
This is the most likely solution.
Find the printer model
- Check the label on the printer.
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Look for the Canon printer name and model.
- If it is not listed, open Control Panel.
- Select View devices and printers.
Write down the exact model. Do not install a driver for a similar-looking Canon model.
Install the current Canon package
- Open Canon’s official support website in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Select your edition of Windows.
- Select the appropriate 32-bit or 64-bit package when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the listed printer driver or complete driver-and-software package.
- Disconnect the USB cable if Canon’s installer requests it.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Reconnect the printer when prompted.
- Restart Windows.
- Print a test page from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
A successful repair normally removes the startup error and allows the Canon printer to print, scan, or open its utility normally. If the installer reports that the printer already exists, remove the old printer first using the cleanup procedure below.
Outbyte Driver Updater can reduce the manual work of hunting through several device entries and guessing which driver is stale; its free scan shows what it finds, while the full version performs the driver installation. It is optional, and the exact Canon package remains the preferred source for this printer-specific file.

Security software may remove or isolate a driver file after an update or installation.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections involving the Canon driver or
cnbp_331.dll. - Expand a detection to view its location and details.
Do not restore the file automatically. Restoration is reasonable only when the file is inside a legitimate Canon driver installation, the printer model is known, and the detection is clearly a false positive.
The safer approach is to download a fresh driver package from Canon and reinstall it. If Windows Security repeatedly removes the file, run a full Microsoft Defender scan and investigate the file path and digital signature before making an exclusion.

Fix 3: Check the file path and digital signature
A genuine driver component should be located within a Canon printer driver or Windows driver-package directory. A copy found in an unrelated application folder, a temporary download directory, or a random user profile folder deserves additional scrutiny.

To inspect the file:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
cnbp_331.dllon the Windows drive. - Right-click the result and select Properties.
- Check the General tab for its location.
- Check Details for description and company information.
- If a Digital Signatures tab exists, inspect the signer and signature status.
Do not assume that a matching filename proves that the file is safe. A malicious file can use the same name. Conversely, a missing signature does not by itself prove that a legitimate legacy driver is malicious. Use the path, printer installation, signature information, and a fresh Canon installer together.
Fix 4: Remove the damaged printer and driver completely
Reinstalling over a broken driver can leave old files behind. Remove the printer and its package before installing the current version.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Disconnect the printer.
Then open Control Panel → View devices and printers and confirm that the old Canon entry is gone.
Remove the old driver package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Drivers tab.
- Highlight the old Canon driver.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Restart Windows.
If the driver is in use, restart the Print Spooler service:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and select Restart.
- Repeat the driver-removal steps.
After restarting, install the exact Canon package again. If the driver does not appear in Print Server Properties, do not delete random files from the driver store. Windows protects that area, and manual deletion can damage other printers.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public records describe cnbp_331.dll as a 32-bit component. That does not mean you should copy it into SysWOW64, and it does not mean the entire Canon package is suitable for every Windows installation.
On 64-bit Windows:
System32normally contains 64-bit Windows system binaries.SysWOW64contains 32-bit Windows compatibility binaries.
The names are confusing, but neither folder is a general-purpose storage location for third-party printer DLLs. Canon’s installer should place each file where the driver expects it.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Select the matching Windows option on Canon’s support page. If Canon supplies only an older 32-bit component for a legacy printer, install the complete compatible package rather than extracting one DLL from it.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Use these commands when Windows itself shows broader signs of corruption, such as failed updates, damaged built-in tools, or repeated installation errors. They are not a substitute for reinstalling the Canon driver.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry the Canon driver installation.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC checks protected Windows system files. Neither command is guaranteed to recreate a missing third-party Canon DLL, and SFC may report no integrity violation even when the printer driver is broken.
Outbyte PC Repair can make the broader repair process easier when you are repeatedly hunting through Windows components and rerunning SFC or DISM without knowing what changed; its free scan identifies reported problems, while repairs are performed by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace reinstalling the Canon package.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 as a generic repair
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general command for restoring missing DLLs.
Do not run:
regsvr32 cnbp_331.dll
unless Canon’s own installation instructions specifically require it. A printer-driver support DLL may not be self-registering, producing an error similar to:
The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That result does not repair the driver. The Canon installer should perform any required registration and configuration automatically.

If Canon no longer provides a compatible driver for the model:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select Add device.
- Wait for Windows to search for the printer.
- If needed, choose Add manually.
- Select a supported Windows printer or class-driver option when offered.
- Print a test page.
A generic driver may provide basic printing but not scanning, ink-level reporting, wireless configuration, or advanced Canon features. Do not force an unrelated model’s DLL into the system. If no compatible driver works, replacing the obsolete printer may be the practical solution.
If the error appears but printing works
A logon error with working printing often points to a stale Canon utility rather than the active printer driver.

FAQ
Is cnbp_331.dll a Windows file?
No verified evidence identifies it as a standard Windows component. Public records associate it with a Canon inkjet printer driver.
Which Canon printer uses cnbp_331.dll?
No single Canon model has been reliably verified as the owner of this filename. Identify the printer installed on your computer and use that model’s driver package.
Should I copy it to System32 or SysWOW64?
No. The correct location is determined by the Canon driver package. Manual copying can create an architecture mismatch and will not restore driver registration or dependencies.
Can SFC restore cnbp_331.dll?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows system files, while this is associated with a third-party printer driver. Reinstall the Canon package first.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Should I register it with regsvr32?
Generally no. Use regsvr32 only when Canon specifically documents that requirement for the relevant component.
Is downloading the DLL separately safe?
It is risky. The download may contain malware, the wrong version, the wrong architecture, or no required dependencies. The complete Canon driver installer is the safe repair route.
What if the printer was already removed?
Remove the leftover Canon driver through Print Server Properties, inspect startup applications, and install a current compatible driver only if you still use the printer. If the model is unsupported, use a Windows class driver or replace the device.
