“The program can’t start because cnbpv3.dll is missing from your computer. Try reinstalling the program to fix this problem.” The cnbpv3.dll error usually points to a damaged or incomplete Canon printer-driver installation, not a missing Windows component.
Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching description:
- The error names a Canon printer utility or appears after a driver update: reinstall the correct Canon driver for the exact printer model.
- The printer was removed, replaced, or disconnected: remove the old Canon printer package and install the current package again.
- Windows Security recently quarantined a file: check Protection History, but prefer reinstalling from Canon instead of restoring the DLL manually.

Fix 1: Reinstall the correct Canon printer driver
This is the most likely fix. Use Canon’s regional product-support site, not a generic DLL repository.
Identify the printer model
Check the model label on the printer itself. You can also check Windows:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Record the complete printer name and model number.
Also record the application named in the error. A Canon scanning utility, printer status monitor, setup program, or another executable may be the component that owns the missing dependency.

Download the matching package
- Open Canon’s regional support site.
- Search for the exact printer model.
- Open the model’s Drivers or Software section.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 as appropriate.
- Select the offered system architecture when Canon provides that choice.
- Download the current Printer Driver, MP Drivers, or model-specific Windows driver package.
- Save the installer locally.
Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking Canon model. Legacy Canon packages may also contain 32-bit components that are required by a 32-bit printer utility, even when Windows itself is 64-bit.
Install it cleanly
- Disconnect the printer’s USB cable if the installer instructs you to do so.
- Close Canon utilities and any print-related programs.
- Right-click the Canon installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
Test by opening Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, selecting the printer, and printing a test page.
If the printer appears but remains broken:
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.

- Restart Windows.

- Press Windows + I.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Remove the broken Canon printer.
- Press Windows + R, type
printui.exe /s /t2, and press Enter. - Open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Canon driver that belongs to the removed printer.
- Select Remove.
- Choose Remove driver and driver package if Windows offers that option.
- Restart the computer.
- Install the current driver from Canon before reconnecting the printer.
Remove only the broken or obsolete Canon package. Do not remove unrelated drivers used by working printers.
If printui.exe does not remove the package, open Settings → Apps → Installed apps and uninstall Canon printer software associated with the old device. Restart, then reinstall the correct package.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security Protection History
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate driver file, or it can detect a counterfeit DLL placed in a printer folder.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection connected with Canon software.
- Note the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not select Restore or Allow on device automatically. If the file came from a legitimate Canon installer, reinstall the complete package from Canon first. Restore a quarantined file only after confirming its source and determining that the detection is a false positive.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components when Windows itself is damaged
cnbpv3.dll is not identified as a protected Windows system file, so System File Checker is not the primary repair. Use these commands when Windows has broader problems or the Canon installer fails because system components are corrupted.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer again.

Fix 5: Check Device Manager for a driver fault
Device Manager may reveal that Windows has lost the printer driver or is using a generic device entry.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon printer or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
- Open the Driver tab and note the provider and date.
- Select Uninstall Device only for the broken Canon device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.

Fix 6: Investigate a missing dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnbpv3.dll itself is absent. Windows may find the DLL but fail to load another library that it depends on.
Check the following:
- The full executable name shown in the error.
- The printer model and Canon software installed with it.
- Whether
cnbpv3.dllis present in the Canon installation folder. - Whether the error began after antivirus cleanup, a Windows update, or removal of another Canon utility.
- Whether the affected program is 32-bit or 64-bit.
Do not copy an x64 DLL into a 32-bit application folder, or a 32-bit DLL into System32. Do not copy it into C:WindowsSystem32, C:WindowsSysWOW64, a game folder, or an unrelated application folder. The correct installer must place the correct build where its owning program expects it.
Installing the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable is not a general fix for cnbpv3.dll. Consider it only if the complete error names a separate runtime such as VCRUNTIME or MSVCP, or if Canon’s installer specifically requires it. Microsoft maintains the supported Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
Fix 7: Remove a stale startup entry
If the printer was already uninstalled but the error appears during every boot, a Canon startup task or service may still be calling the removed DLL.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an identifiable Canon entry.
- Right-click it and select Disable.
- Restart Windows.
For scheduled tasks:
- Open Start and search for Task Scheduler.
- Open Task Scheduler Library.
- Look for a Canon task that points to a missing executable or DLL.
- Confirm that it belongs to the removed printer software.
- Disable that specific orphaned task.
Do not disable unidentified Windows tasks. If the entry is unclear, uninstall the related Canon software cleanly and reinstall only the package required by the current printer.

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or a modified file. Even a genuine DLL copied into the wrong folder may leave the underlying Canon installation broken.
regsvr32 cnbpv3.dll is also not a standard repair. Microsoft’s Regsvr32 guidance describes it for self-registering COM/OLE DLLs and ActiveX controls. A printer-driver DLL does not become functional merely because it is registered, and the command may return “entry point not found” or “module could not be loaded.”

- Allow Windows and Canon installers to finish before disconnecting the printer.
