If the installer fails, disconnect the printer temporarily, restart Windows, and run the model-specific installer again. Follow the installer’s connection instructions rather than adding a generic printer first.

A security product may have removed a driver component, or the file may be counterfeit.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
cnbsq4.dll, Canon software, or the printer installer. - Open the event and record the detected path and threat name.
Do not choose Allow on device or restore the file automatically. First confirm that the path belongs to a Canon installation directory and that the installer came directly from Canon. Scan the original installer before considering restoration.
If the file came from an unofficial download, appeared in an unrelated application directory, or has no trustworthy provenance, remove it and run:

The safer repair is normally to uninstall the affected Canon package and reinstall it from Canon rather than restoring an isolated DLL.
Fix 4: Repair Windows components and retry the installer
Use this step when Windows Update, the installer, or the printing environment itself appears damaged. These commands repair protected Windows components; they do not guarantee restoration of a third-party Canon DLL.
- Open Start.
- Type

Wait for it to complete. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after both commands finish. Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker.
Retry the Canon installation and test printing. If either command reports that it could not complete, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If the Canon error remains but Windows reports no component problems, return to the model-specific driver reinstall rather than repeatedly running SFC.

Device Manager can reveal a failed or incomplete driver installation.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon printer, an unknown device, or a device with a yellow warning icon.
- Right-click the affected device and select Properties.
- Read the message under Device status.
If the device is disabled, select Enable device. If Windows reports a driver problem:
- Right-click the device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the complete Canon installer again.

Fix 6: Do not register or copy the DLL manually
regsvr32 is not a general-purpose missing-DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no public evidence that cnbsq4.dll must be registered manually.

- The executable or utility displaying the message
- The full path where Windows expected
