cngaudit.dll is a Microsoft Windows component known as the Windows Cryptographic Next Generation audit library. If Windows or an application says cngaudit.dll is missing, not found, corrupted, or could not be loaded, repair Windows first rather than downloading a replacement DLL.
The safest order is Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker. Then check antivirus quarantine, malware, the affected application, and the system architecture.

Public Windows file inventories place the file under:
%WINDIR%System32%WINDIR%SysWOW64on 64-bit Windows, for 32-bit system code- The component store on some older Windows installations
The names are confusing. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally contains 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 serves 32-bit applications. Do not use the folder name alone to decide which copy to download or replace. Microsoft’s file-system redirection documentation
Historical inventories list different versions and sizes for Windows Vista and Windows 7. Those values are not universal current specifications, and they should not be used to substitute an old DLL into Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteBefore fixing it, record the exact error
Write down the complete message and the application that displays it. Common variants include:
- “The program can’t start because cngaudit.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “cngaudit.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading cngaudit.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “cngaudit.dll is corrupted.”
- “cngaudit.dll file could not be loaded.”
- “Cannot find cngaudit.dll.”
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cngaudit.dll itself is absent. It can mean that a dependency required by the file or application is missing.
Also check whether every application fails or only one older program. If Windows tools and several programs show related errors, treat the problem as Windows component damage. If only one program fails, continue with Windows repair first, then repair that application.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes, depending on the number of updates.
Windows servicing can restore or replace protected components without manual file copying.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- On Windows 11, select Windows Update. On Windows 10, select Update & Security, then Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Open the affected application again.
If the application starts normally, the missing component was probably repaired during servicing. If the error remains, continue with DISM and SFC.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15 to 45 minutes.
Microsoft recommends running Deployment Image Servicing and Management before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to restore protected files. Microsoft’s DISM and SFC instructions
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control appears.
- Enter this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter.
- Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Restart Windows after DISM completes.
Run SFC
After the restart, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sfc /scannow
Press Enter and wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
The result tells you what to do next:
- Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations: protected system files appear intact. Continue with the quarantine and application checks below.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them: restart Windows and test the application again.
- Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them: do not download a replacement DLL. Continue with the CBS log and recovery steps in this guide.
If repeating DISM and SFC is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the Windows issues that need attention instead of making you hunt through repair results manually; its free scan identifies problems, while repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update plus DISM and SFC remain the standard repair path.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine and protection history
Time needed: 5 to 15 minutes.
Security software may quarantine a damaged, altered, or incorrectly detected file. Do not restore a file merely because its name is cngaudit.dll.
In Windows Security:
- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any detection associated with
cngaudit.dll. - Check the original file path, detection name, publisher information, and available action.
Only restore or allow the file when you can verify that it is the legitimate Microsoft component and that the detection is a false positive. Microsoft warns that restoring an unsafe file can expose the device, and Defender may detect it again unless the file is explicitly allowed. Microsoft Protection History guidance

If the file was quarantined after malware removal, do not simply restore it. Disconnect the computer from the network if you suspect an active infection, run Microsoft Defender Offline or another trusted security scan, and then repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
A historical malware report documents abuse of the cngaudit.dll filename. An unsigned copy, an unexpected location, or a file that appeared after a suspicious infection deserves investigation rather than replacement.
Fix 4: Check the file location and digital signature
Time needed: 5 to 10 minutes.
Do not use a search-engine result or a third-party DLL site to decide whether a file is genuine. Check the copy already on the computer.
- Open File Explorer.
- In the address bar, enter:
%WINDIR%System32
- Search for
cngaudit.dll. - If Windows is 64-bit, also inspect:
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
- Right-click the file if present.
- Select Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab, if available.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports a valid signature associated with Microsoft.
The correct location depends on the Windows architecture and the process using the file. A copy in an application’s private folder is not automatically legitimate. A copy in an unusual temporary, download, user-profile, or newly created program folder is especially suspicious.
To check the operating system architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
Do not copy a historical 32-bit or 64-bit file into the other system directory. Do not replace a newer Windows file with one taken from Vista or Windows 7.
Fix 5: Repair or reinstall the affected application
Time needed: 10 to 30 minutes.
Use this step when only one application reports the error after Windows repair succeeds or reports no integrity violations.
First look for an in-app or launcher repair function:
- Open the application’s launcher.
- Open its settings or library.
- Look for Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair.
- Run the repair.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
For a traditional desktop application:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the program’s local settings.
If those options are unavailable, uninstall the program, restart Windows, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. The application’s repair or reinstall is definitive only when the application itself is damaged. It should not replace the Windows repair steps for a protected Windows component.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAvoid installing random Visual C++ packages, DirectX files, or .NET versions unless the application’s official documentation specifically requires them. Those packages do not generally restore a missing Windows cryptography DLL.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a known system change
Time needed: 20 to 60 minutes.
System Restore may help if the error began immediately after an update, cleanup utility, driver installation, malware removal, or interrupted installation. It works only when a suitable restore point exists and System Protection was enabled. Microsoft recovery guidance
- Save open work.
- Open Start.
- Type Create a restore point.
- Open the matching result.
- Select System Restore.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
System Restore does not guarantee that every file will be restored and does not replace a malware scan. If the error remains, return to DISM and SFC results rather than trying to copy the DLL manually.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Update a related driver only when evidence points to one
Time needed: 15 to 30 minutes.
A driver is not the normal source of cngaudit.dll, but an interrupted Windows update or damaged device software can produce broader component errors.
Use Device Manager only when the error appeared with a specific device, driver update, or hardware change:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
Do not randomly update every device. If the hardware vendor supplies a newer driver, download it from that vendor’s official support page and confirm that it matches the Windows edition and architecture.

Why regsvr32 cngaudit.dll is usually wrong
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, typically COM or ActiveX components. Microsoft documents it as a registration utility, not a general-purpose DLL repair command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation
There is no verified evidence that cngaudit.dll is an independently registerable ActiveX or COM DLL. Running:
regsvr32 cngaudit.dll
may produce an error without proving that the file is corrupt. It can simply be the wrong operation. Use Windows servicing tools instead.
If SFC cannot repair the file
Open the CBS log to see which protected files failed:
%WINDIR%LogsCBSCBS.log
You can open it with Notepad and search for cngaudit.dll, Cannot repair, or Repair failed.
If SFC repeatedly reports unrepaired files:
- Back up important personal files.
- Confirm that Windows Update has completed.
- Run DISM again, followed by SFC.
- Check the CBS log.
- Use Windows recovery options or an in-place repair installation from matching, official Windows media if necessary.
Manual replacement should be reserved for controlled recovery using a matching, known-good Windows source. It is not a safe first step.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
Do not download cngaudit.dll from a DLL collection site or copy it from another computer. A downloaded file may be:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Unsigned or modified
- Bundled with malware
- Missing dependencies
- Unable to repair the damaged component store
Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Microsoft recovery tools, or the affected program’s official installer instead.
Likely causes and the appropriate fix
| Likely cause | Best next step |
|---|---|
| Windows component corruption or incomplete servicing | Windows Update, then DISM and SFC |
| Antivirus quarantine | Inspect Protection History and verify the file before restoring |
| Malware removal or replacement | Run an offline or trusted security scan, then repair Windows |
| Wrong architecture or old DLL | Stop manual copying and let Windows restore the correct component |
| One application is damaged | Use its Verify, Repair, or official reinstall option |
| Disk or file-system damage | Back up data, inspect SFC results, and use recovery options |
FAQ
Is cngaudit.dll a legitimate Windows file?
Yes. It is associated with Microsoft Windows and the Windows Cryptographic Next Generation audit library. A legitimate copy should be in an expected Windows location and have a valid Microsoft signature.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Is cngaudit.dll part of Windows 10 and Windows 11?
Its availability and exact version depend on the Windows release and servicing level. Do not assume that an old inventory or file size applies to every Windows 10 or Windows 11 build.
Should I put cngaudit.dll in System32 or SysWOW64?
Do not choose manually. Windows uses the appropriate system location for the process architecture. On 64-bit Windows, System32 conventionally serves 64-bit system files and SysWOW64 serves 32-bit code.
Does “module could not be found” prove cngaudit.dll is missing?
No. The message can indicate that a dependency is missing. Repair Windows and the affected application instead of replacing only the named file.
Can I fix it with regsvr32?
Usually not. regsvr32 applies to registerable COM or ActiveX DLLs, not every Windows DLL.
