Start with this diagnostic checklist
cnhf1ur.dll is a Canon fax-driver component. If Windows says cnhf1ur.dll is missing, the safest fix is usually to repair or reinstall the Canon printer or multifunction-device driver that installed it.
Before changing anything, record:
- The exact program or Windows component showing the error
- Whether it appears while printing, scanning, faxing, or opening Canon software
- The Canon printer or MFP model installed on the computer
- Whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit
- Whether the problem began after a driver update, Windows Update, antivirus detection, disk cleanup, or printer removal
- The complete wording of the error
A message saying “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean cnhf1ur.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found that file but failed to load a dependency required by it.

Canon distributes fax support through model-specific packages. A package may contain a printer driver, fax driver, scanner software, and installation documentation. The correct package depends on the exact Canon model and the installed Windows architecture.
Public file-index records disagree about historical versions, file size, and 32-bit or 64-bit status. Those records are not Canon release documentation, so do not use them to choose a replacement DLL. The installed Canon package and its support page are the authoritative sources for your device.
Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon driver
This is the most likely solution when the error appears during printing, faxing, scanning, or Canon utility startup.
Identify the printer model
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon printer or multifunction device.
- Write down the complete model name, including suffixes such as
dw,n, ori. - If the device is not listed, check its front panel, label, purchase documentation, or the application that originally installed it.
Do not select a similar-looking Canon model. A package for a nearby model may install successfully while still lacking the component your application needs.
Check Windows architecture
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then About.
- Find System type.
- Note whether Windows is 64-bit or 32-bit.
A 32-bit application can still run on 64-bit Windows and may use a compatible driver component supplied by the complete Canon package. Do not try to solve that situation by downloading a 32-bit DLL and copying it into SysWOW64. The driver installer must supply the files in the locations and architecture expected by Windows.
Remove the damaged printer installation
If the printer is still present but the driver is broken:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the Canon device.
- Select Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
For a deeper cleanup:
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- Select the Canon driver in the Drivers tab.
- Select Remove.
- Choose the option to remove the driver and driver package if Windows offers it.
- Restart the computer.
Only remove the Canon package if you are sure it belongs to the affected printer. Removing a shared driver can affect other queues.

Download and install the package
- Open Canon’s official support site in your browser.
- Search for the exact printer or MFP model.
- Select your Windows edition and architecture.
- Download the complete printer, fax, or MF Driver package.
- Close Canon utilities and any program that uses the printer.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after installation.
- Print a test page or open the Canon fax utility.
The repair worked if the original application opens without the DLL message and the printer or fax queue functions normally. If the same message returns, note which application produces it. The problem may be a stale printer queue, a missing dependency, or a different Canon package still registered in Windows.
Manually comparing driver packages and removing stale queues can take time, especially when several Canon devices have been installed. Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the driver
Security software can remove a legitimate driver component after an update or detection.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Expand any item referring to a Canon driver or
cnhf1ur.dll. - Check the original file path and detection details.
Do not restore the file just because its name matches the error. Restore or allow it only when all of these are true:

If the file came from an unknown source, lacks a valid signature, or was found in a temporary download folder, leave it quarantined. Download the correct Canon driver again instead.
After restoring a verified file, restart Windows and test the affected program. If Windows Security quarantines it again, do not repeatedly allow it. Reinstall the package from Canon and run a complete security scan.
Fix 3: Check the driver and application relationship
The failing process may not be Canon software. Windows Print Spooler, a fax application, a document-management program, or a third-party application can load the Canon driver on its behalf.
Check the error context:
- Note the name in the error dialog title.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Processes or Details.
- Look for the program that was active when the error appeared.
- Check whether the Canon printer is still installed.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners and remove obsolete Canon queues.
If you no longer use the Canon device, removing its old printer and fax queues may be the correct solution. Restart afterward. A leftover queue can continue asking Windows to load a driver that no longer has all its files.

If the problem occurs only in one application, repair or reinstall that application after repairing the Canon driver. If multiple programs show the message, focus first on the shared Canon installation and Windows print subsystem.
Fix 4: Install pending Windows updates and repair Windows components
Use this step when the error began after an interrupted update, system cleanup, or broader Windows corruption. DISM and SFC repair Windows components; they do not replace a missing Canon driver package.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Start and search for Terminal.
- Right-click Windows Terminal and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows when both commands complete.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. The commands and their purpose are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker guidance.
Success means SFC reports that it found and repaired corrupted files, or that it found no integrity violations, and the original error no longer appears. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, reinstall the Canon package anyway. These tools cannot reconstruct a third-party driver from an arbitrary DLL.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is useful if the Canon driver worked until a recent driver installation, Windows update, cleanup operation, or software change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but can roll back system settings, drivers, and installed programs. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
After the rollback, test the Canon device. If the error disappears, avoid immediately reinstalling the same driver or utility that triggered it. Obtain the current package for the exact model instead.

Fix 6: Investigate a dependency or architecture problem
Windows loads a DLL together with the other libraries it requires. Therefore, “module could not be found” can refer to a dependency rather than cnhf1ur.dll.
Check these possibilities:
- The Canon package is incomplete.
- A 32-bit application is using an incompatible driver component.
- Windows is loading an obsolete driver from an old printer queue.
- A required Microsoft runtime is separately missing.
- The DLL exists but has been damaged or is unsigned.
- The Canon package does not support the current Windows version.
Only install Visual C++ when the complete error also names files such as MSVCP*.dll, VCRUNTIME*.dll, or MSVCR*.dll. Microsoft provides separate Visual C++ Redistributable packages for supported architectures. Reinstalling Visual C++ alone is not the primary fix for a Canon fax-driver component.
To inspect the file without replacing it:
- Open File Explorer.
- Search for
cnhf1ur.dllon the Windows drive. - Right-click a result and select Properties.
- Review Location, Digital Signatures, and Details.
- Treat a file outside a Canon or expected driver directory as suspicious.
Do not copy a file from one computer to another. Architecture, dependencies, package version, and signature all matter.

It may return an error stating that DllRegisterServer was not found. That does not prove the file is damaged. It usually means the DLL is not designed to be registered that way. Microsoft describes the tool’s scope and errors in its regsvr32 documentation.
Why downloading cnhf1ur.dll is unsafe
Do not download cnhf1ur.dll from a random DLL repository or copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64C:WindowsDriverStore
That approach can install malware, use the wrong architecture, create a version conflict, break signature validation, or leave the actual Canon package incomplete. It also will not repair a missing dependency or stale printer queue.

Use the exact Canon support package for the model and Windows architecture. If the file was quarantined, verify its provenance and signature before considering recovery. If it is outside a trusted driver location or antivirus identifies tampering, run a full scan or Microsoft Defender Offline scan rather than restoring it.
When to escalate
Collect these details if reinstalling the driver does not work:
- Canon model
- Windows edition and architecture
- Exact error text
- Application named in the dialog
- File location and signature status
- Whether the printer queue still exists
- Recent Windows, driver, antivirus, or cleanup changes
- Results from DISM and SFC
If the device is still supported, contact Canon with that information. If it is obsolete, remove its queues and software rather than forcing an old DLL into Windows.

Is cnhf1ur.dll a Windows system file?
