cnhi10a.dll is a Canon WIA scanner-driver component, not a normal Windows runtime file. If Windows says cnhi10a.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, restore the Canon scanner or multifunction-printer driver that installed it instead of downloading the DLL separately.
The filename is associated with Canon’s WIA Scanner Driver Image Enhancement dll. WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, is the Windows layer that lets applications communicate with scanners. Canon supplies the device-specific driver components used through that layer. The exact Canon model associated with cnhi10a.dll is not confirmed publicly, so choose the driver by your device model rather than by the filename alone.

Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon scanner driver
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus any download time
This is the most likely fix when scanning stopped after a driver update, Windows upgrade, failed installation, software removal, or disk cleanup.

1. Identify the Canon device
Check the label on the scanner or multifunction printer. Record the complete model name, including any letters or regional suffixes.
If you are unsure:
- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, Printers, and Universal Serial Bus controllers.
- Look for the Canon device or an entry with a warning icon.
- Right-click the device and select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Select Hardware Ids from the Property list.
Do not use a driver for a similar-looking Canon model. Different scanners can use different WIA, ScanGear, or multifunction-driver packages.
2. Check Windows architecture
To check whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
Download the Canon package that matches your Windows version and architecture. Do not copy a 32-bit cnhi10a.dll into a 64-bit Windows folder, or copy a 64-bit component into a 32-bit installation. The driver installer must also register the device, install its supporting files, and create the required permissions and configuration entries.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3. Download the package from Canon
Use Canon’s official regional support site and search for the exact device model. Select your installed version of Windows, then look for a package described as a scanner driver, WIA driver, ScanGear package, or, for some multifunction devices, an MFDrivers package.
Canon may provide separate printing and scanning packages. A printer can continue printing while the scanning component is missing, so reinstalling only the printer driver may not resolve this error.
Before installing:
- Disconnect the scanner’s USB cable if Canon’s instructions request it.
- Close Canon scan applications, Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, Photoshop, and other imaging programs.
- Temporarily note custom scan profiles or destinations.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the installer’s connection instructions.
- Restart Windows when installation finishes.
- Reconnect the scanner if instructed.
- Test the Canon scanning application.
If the Canon application scans successfully, the missing-file problem is resolved. Also test Windows Scan to confirm that the WIA path works outside the Canon application.
Manually comparing dozens of driver versions and removing old packages can be tedious, especially when Windows lists several similarly named devices. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver problems and identify available driver installations; its free scan shows what needs attention, while repair and driver installation require the full version.

Fix 2: Remove the damaged Canon package and install it again
Time needed: 15–25 minutes
A Canon update can leave an application and its driver components at different versions. This is especially likely if the update was interrupted or Canon software was removed through an incomplete uninstaller.
Remove the Canon software
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Search for the Canon scanner application, ScanGear, MF Scan Utility, or the relevant Canon driver package.
- Select the three-dot menu or the program name.
- Select Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows.
Also check Control Panel if the package does not appear in Settings:

- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Remove the Canon scanning software or driver listed there.

- Press Windows key + X.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices or Cameras.
- Confirm that the scanner appears without a warning icon.
- If it appears under Unknown devices, right-click it and select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you are certain the entry belongs to the affected Canon scanner.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer again.
If the scanner is missing entirely, test another USB port and cable. For a network scanner, verify that the device and computer are on the same network and that the Canon installer can discover it.
Fix 3: Confirm that Windows Image Acquisition is running
Time needed: 5 minutes
A WIA service problem can prevent a valid Canon driver from loading. It may affect Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, ScanGear, MF Scan Utility, or another WIA-compatible application.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or the setting recommended by the installed Canon package.
- If Service status is stopped, select Start.
- If it is already running, select Stop, wait briefly, and select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Restart the Canon scanning application.
Test both the Canon application and Windows Scan. If only one application fails, the DLL problem may be limited to that application’s installation or configuration rather than the scanner driver itself.
Fix 4: Check Windows Update and optional driver updates
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Windows may offer a compatible scanner driver through Windows Update, although the manufacturer’s package is preferable when Canon provides one.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a Canon or imaging-device driver that matches your scanner.
- Restart Windows.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select View optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install the matching scanner driver.
- Restart Windows.
If Windows Update finds nothing, return to the exact Canon product page. Windows 11 compatibility cannot be inferred merely because an older Canon file exists. An older scanner may have no current Windows 11 package, or its legacy driver may work only under limited compatibility conditions.
Fix 5: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–10 minutes
Security software can quarantine a driver component after a detection or during a software update.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for a detection involving
cnhi10a.dllor the Canon driver package. - Open the detection details.
- Confirm that the file came from an official Canon installer and that the detection is a false positive before restoring it.
- If appropriate, select Restore or Allow on device.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package afterward.
- Restart Windows and test scanning.
Do not restore a file merely because its name matches the error. A malicious or altered DLL can use the same filename. Microsoft notes that restoring a quarantined item causes Defender to scan it again.
If the file came from a random DLL website, a forum attachment, or an unofficial “DLL fixer,” remove it and run a full Windows Security scan. The safe replacement is a fresh Canon driver installation.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
cnhi10a.dll is normally a third-party Canon driver component, so SFC may report that it found no integrity violations. Use these commands when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, the WIA subsystem appears damaged, or the Canon installer itself fails.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the Canon scanner package.
- Test scanning again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a substitute for installing a missing Canon driver.
If repeating these commands does not change the error, stop treating cnhi10a.dll as a Windows system file and return to the device-specific Canon installer.
When manually running DISM and SFC is difficult to interpret, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for Windows issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repair requires the full version.

Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent change
Time needed: 20–45 minutes
Use System Restore if scanning worked recently and the error began after a Windows update, Canon driver update, software removal, or system change.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the scanner stopped working.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back drivers, programs, and system settings without removing personal files. It does not guarantee that a missing Canon driver will return, so reinstall the correct Canon package afterward if needed.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Do not use regsvr32 for this file
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration functions such as DllRegisterServer. A scanner image-enhancement component is not automatically a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL.
Running commands such as these is generally not an appropriate repair:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →regsvr32 cnhi10a.dll
You may receive an error saying that the entry point was not found, or an architecture-related error. That result does not prove the DLL is bad. “The specified module could not be found” can also refer to a dependency required by the named DLL, not necessarily the named file itself.
The Canon installer is the correct mechanism for placing the component, registering the driver package, and installing its dependencies.

Why the error happens
Common causes include:
- The Canon scanner driver was removed or incompletely installed.
- A Canon update left mismatched application and driver files.
- The selected package does not match the scanner model, Windows version, or architecture.
- Antivirus quarantined the component.
- The WIA service is stopped or damaged.
- A Windows update or system change disrupted the driver.
- The scanner is unsupported on the current Windows release.
- An unofficial DLL copy replaced or conflicted with the Canon installation.
- A dependency is missing even though the error names
cnhi10a.dll.
The exact error wording varies. You may see “CNHI10A.DLL was not found,” “missing or corrupted,” “failed to load,” or “the specified module could not be found.” These messages do not identify the Canon model or prove that the file itself is absent.
If every fix fails
Check these items before considering Windows repair:
- Confirm the Canon model and Windows architecture again.
- Remove old Canon scanning software and reinstall the current package.
- Check Device Manager for an unknown imaging device.
- Inspect Event Viewer by pressing Windows key + X, selecting Event Viewer, and reviewing Windows Logs > System around the failure time.
- Test another USB port and cable.
- Confirm that WIA is running.
- Test Windows Scan and the Canon application separately.
- Check Canon’s compatibility information for the current Windows version.
- Remove unofficial DLL copies and suspicious DLL download sites software.
- Run a full Windows Security scan.
If Windows itself is broadly unstable, Windows 11 provides Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now on supported installations. This repairs Windows components while preserving applications, files, and settings according to Microsoft’s recovery guidance.
FAQ
Is cnhi10a.dll a Windows system file?
No. It is associated with Canon’s WIA scanner-driver software. Its presence does not mean it belongs in the Windows System32 folder. Canon packages may place components in a driver-managed location.
Is it part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no evidence that those runtimes are the primary remedy for this file. Install or repair them only when a specific Canon application documents that dependency. Start with the exact Canon scanner driver.
Which Canon scanner uses cnhi10a.dll?
Public metadata associates the filename with Canon’s WIA Scanner Driver Image Enhancement component, but it does not reliably confirm one specific scanner model. Identify the hardware and install its matching package.
Does this affect Windows Scan or only Canon software?
It can affect any application using the affected Canon WIA driver, including Windows Scan, Windows Fax and Scan, ScanGear, MF Scan Utility, Photoshop, or another WIA client. If only one application fails, repair that application after testing another WIA client.
Is copying the DLL from another computer safe?
No. The copy may have the wrong architecture, version, dependencies, permissions, or malware. It also does not install the Canon driver registration. Reinstall the complete package from Canon instead.
Why can the printer still print when scanning fails?
Printing and scanning commonly use separate driver components. A functioning print queue does not prove that the Canon WIA scanner driver is installed correctly.
Should I install a 32-bit or 64-bit driver?
Use the package matching your Windows architecture and the Canon model’s compatibility instructions. Do not choose based only on the size or location of a DLL found online.
