The safest fix is to identify the application that needs it and repair or reinstall that application so its complete, matching GTK/GLib runtime is restored.
What this file actually does
GObject is the object and type-system library used by GTK and other GNOME libraries. The Windows file libgobject-2.0-0.dll normally works alongside related GLib files, including libglib-2.0-0.dll and libgio-2.0-0.dll.

It may be bundled with GIMP, GTK applications, GStreamer software, Python/PyGObject programs, Aravis, MySQL Workbench, Pidgin, plugins, games, and developer-built programs. It is supplied by the application or its runtime package, not by Windows.
The correct copy is usually beside the program’s executable or in its private bin directory. It normally does not belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.

Both 32-bit and 64-bit builds exist. A 32-bit application needs 32-bit GTK/GLib files even on 64-bit Windows. A 64-bit application needs 64-bit files. Version numbers shown in file properties can also differ between application bundles, so do not select a replacement based only on a number found online.
Causes by symptom
| Error or symptom | Most likely cause | Correct response |
|---|---|---|
| “libgobject-2.0-0.dll is missing” | Incomplete installation, update, or quarantine | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| “The program could not be executed” | The application cannot find its bundled runtime | Restore the application files and check its launch path |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong architecture, corruption, or incompatible dependencies | Reinstall the matching application/runtime |
| “Entry point could not be located” | A mismatched version of the DLL was loaded | Reinstall the application and related plugin as a matched set |
DllNotFoundException |
.NET or Python cannot locate the DLL or one of its dependencies | Check architecture, runtime paths, and the complete dependency chain |
| The file exists, but the error remains | Another dependency is missing or the wrong DLL is being found first | Repair the full runtime rather than copying another DLL |
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the application that needs the DLL
This is the most likely and reliable solution.
Identify the parent application
Look at the error window, shortcut, launcher, or executable path.
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Processes or Details.
- If the program appears, right-click it and select Open file location.
- Note the application folder and executable name.
- If the error appears during startup, right-click the program’s shortcut, choose Properties, and inspect Target.
The folder containing that executable tells you which program owns the missing runtime. Do not begin by downloading the DLL separately.

For a traditional desktop application:
- Press
Windows+R. - Type
appwiz.cpland press Enter. - Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair, Change, or Modify, if available.
- Complete the repair and restart Windows.
- Launch the application again.
For an app installed through Windows:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Select the affected application.
- Click the three-dot menu and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not work, return to the same screen and select Reset, if available.
If there is no repair option, uninstall the application from Installed apps or Programs and Features, restart the computer, and reinstall it using the developer’s official installer. Reinstall the same application edition and architecture that you previously used.
A successful repair normally restores several related runtime files, not just libgobject-2.0-0.dll. If the error changes to another missing GLib, GTK, or GStreamer file, the original installation was incomplete and the full reinstall should continue.
Fix 2: Verify the game or launcher files
If the error belongs to a game, do not copy the DLL into the game directory manually.
Open the game launcher and look for a command named Verify integrity, Verify files, Repair, or Scan and repair. The exact location varies, but it is commonly found by:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Opening the launcher.
- Selecting the game.
- Opening its gear, three-dot, or Manage menu.
- Choosing Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity.
- Waiting for the scan and replacement process to finish.
- Restarting the launcher and opening the game.
This restores the game’s own GTK, GStreamer, or other bundled files. If verification reports files that cannot be replaced, close the game and launcher completely, check antivirus quarantine, and run the launcher with its normal administrator option only if the vendor provides one.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may remove or quarantine a legitimate application file after an update or a false detection.
Windows Security
- Open Settings.
- Select Privacy & security.
- Choose Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent detections for the affected application folder.
- Expand an item and inspect its path and name.
Restore a file only when you have confirmed that it belongs to the legitimate application installed from the developer’s official source. After restoring it, repair or reinstall the application so related files are checked as well.
Do not permanently disable antivirus protection to force an unknown DLL to run. If a verified application is repeatedly quarantined, update the application and antivirus definitions first. Add an exclusion only when you understand the security trade-off and the application’s vendor recommends it.
Fix 4: Check architecture, dependencies, and the runtime path
A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, but it cannot substitute 64-bit DLLs for 32-bit DLLs.

Check the application architecture using its documentation, installer, or vendor support information. You can also inspect the executable with a trusted dependency-analysis utility. The important question is whether the executable and every GTK/GLib component belong to the same architecture.
If libgobject-2.0-0.dll already exists:
- Open the application’s installation folder.
- Confirm whether the DLL is beside the main executable or inside the application’s
bindirectory. - Check whether related files such as
libglib-2.0-0.dllandlibgio-2.0-0.dllare present. - Do not replace those files individually.
- Use the application’s repair or reinstall process if any file is missing.
Windows searches the application directory and other defined locations when loading a DLL. A bad PATH setting can cause the program to find an old or incompatible runtime before it finds the correct one.
To inspect PATH:
- Press
Windowsand search for environment variables. - Select Edit the system environment variables.
- Click Environment Variables.
- Review the Path entries under both user and system variables.
- Look for old GTK, GStreamer, MSYS2, or application-specific
binfolders.
Do not make a permanent global PATH change unless the software’s documentation specifically requires it. A safer fix is to launch the application through its intended launcher or shell, or reinstall it so its launcher supplies the correct runtime path.

If the message says entry point not found, Windows has found a DLL but the DLL does not contain the function the application expects. This usually means mixed versions, an old plugin, or the wrong runtime directory. Reinstall the application and plugin together instead of replacing only libgobject-2.0-0.dll.
Fix 5: Repair an MSYS2 installation
If you installed the program through MSYS2, repair the package family that matches the application. Do not mix mingw64, ucrt64, clang64, and i686 runtimes.
Open the appropriate MSYS2 terminal and update the installation:
pacman -Syu
Follow any instruction to close and reopen the terminal, then run the update again if requested. Install the matching GLib package. For a UCRT64 application, use:
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-glib2
For a 64-bit MinGW application, the package family is different:
pacman -S mingw-w64-x86_64-glib2
Use the package that matches the application’s environment, not simply the package name shown in an unrelated guide. GTK applications may also need the matching GTK or Python GObject package, for example:
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-gtk3
pacman -S mingw-w64-ucrt-x86_64-python-gobject
The GLib runtime is normally installed as a dependency. After installation, launch the program from the intended MSYS2 environment and confirm that the error is gone.
Fix 6: Repair GStreamer, Python, GTK, and plugin installations
GStreamer and Python applications often fail because the application can see one runtime directory but not its dependencies.
For GStreamer:
- Confirm whether the application is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Install the matching GStreamer runtime and development components required by that application.
- Check that the runtime’s
bindirectory is used by the launcher. - Remove stale runtime paths from the application’s configuration.
- Reinstall the application or plugin if it still loads an older GLib copy.
For Python or PyGObject:
- Activate the same Python environment used to run the program.
- Confirm that Python and the GTK bindings have the same architecture.
- Repair or reinstall the binding and its GLib runtime through the environment’s documented package method.
- Launch the program from that environment rather than from a shortcut using a different Python installation.
For GIMP plugins, reinstall the plugin and the application together when possible. An older plugin may load a different GTK or GLib version than the GIMP installation expects.

Fix 7: Run Windows component repairs only when Windows itself is damaged
libgobject-2.0-0.dll is generally supplied by a third-party application. SFC and DISM normally cannot recreate it. Use them when Windows itself has other corruption symptoms, such as broken system components, failed updates, or multiple unrelated Windows file errors.
- Open Start and search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run this command and wait for it to finish:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the application that reported the DLL error.
DISM repairs the Windows image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither is a substitute for reinstalling a missing bundled GTK runtime.
When you are tired of repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which Windows component changed, Outbyte PC Repair can provide a scan showing what it identifies; its repair actions are handled by the full version, and reinstalling the affected application remains the definitive fix for this DLL.
Fix 8: Update drivers only for broader hardware-related problems
A graphics, camera, or device driver can contribute to an application crash, but a missing libgobject-2.0-0.dll is usually an application-runtime problem rather than a driver problem.
If the error occurs only when using a camera, capture device, or graphics feature:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category, such as Cameras, Display adapters, or Sound, video and game controllers.
- Right-click the device and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and test the application.
- If the problem began after a driver update, open Properties, select the Driver tab, and use Roll Back Driver when available.
Avoid changing drivers as the first response to this DLL error. If several devices have outdated drivers and manually hunting each vendor’s version is the problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for identified driver issues; driver installation is handled by the full version, and it does not replace repairing the application that owns this DLL.
Do not download or register this DLL
Random DLL download sites are unsafe because the file may contain malware, belong to a different release, or be built for the wrong architecture. Even a clean copy often fails because another dependency is missing or because the application needs a matched set of GTK/GLib files.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Do not copy it into System32, SysWOW64, or an unrelated application folder. That can create version conflicts and DLL-preloading risks.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose COM registration functions such as DllRegisterServer; GObject is a runtime library, not a COM component. Registering it will not repair the application.
The safe sources are the affected program’s official installer, its official launcher repair function, or the matching package manager environment, such as the correct MSYS2 package family.
Frequently asked questions
Is libgobject-2.0-0.dll part of Windows?
No. It is part of the GLib/GObject runtime used by GTK and related software. Windows may report the error, but Windows normally does not provide this file.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Can SFC restore it?
Usually not. SFC repairs protected Windows files, while this DLL is normally bundled with a third-party application. Repair that application first.
Where should the file be located?
Usually beside the application executable or in its private runtime bin directory. Its correct location depends on the program that loads it.
Why does the message remain when the file is present?
A dependency may be missing, the file may have the wrong architecture, the application may be finding a different copy first, or the DLL may be incompatible with an old plugin.
What should I do if reinstalling does not work?
Record the executable path, determine whether it is x86 or x64, check antivirus history, inspect the application’s runtime directory, and note the next dependency named by the error or diagnostic tool. A clean reinstall from the official source should restore the complete matched runtime.
