Start with this diagnostic checklist
The cnhlx850.dll error usually points to an incomplete or damaged Canon printer, scanner, or multifunction-device package. Before repairing anything, record:
- Which program shows the error: a Canon utility, Windows startup process, printing software, or another application.
- When it appears: during startup, when printing or scanning, after a Windows update, or after removing Canon software.
- The complete file path: select the error window or inspect the process that reported it.
- Your Windows architecture: go to Settings → System → About and check System type.
- The Canon model previously installed: include printers and scanners that are no longer connected.
Do not download a replacement DLL first. cnhlx850.dll is identified in public file records as a Canon DLL with the internal description LLD, and it has appeared in older Windows driver-store locations. That does not make it a general Windows runtime such as Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET, and the exact Canon device family is not publicly established.

Fix 1: Reinstall the Canon package for the exact device
This is the fastest and most likely solution. The DLL is normally restored when the complete Canon driver or device software package is installed, rather than by copying the file separately.
- Identify the Canon printer, scanner, or multifunction device that was installed.
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Search for the exact model number shown on the device or its original documentation.
- Select your installed Windows version and architecture when Canon asks for them.
- Download the complete driver or software package, not an isolated DLL.
- If the device is currently connected by USB, disconnect it until the installer requests a connection.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Remove Canon entries related to the affected device, such as its driver utility, scanning software, or device maintenance package.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer as administrator. Right-click the installer, select Show more options if necessary, then choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard and reconnect the device only when prompted.
- Restart again, then test printing or scanning.
A successful repair normally means the Canon application opens without the error and the device appears under Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners or Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Cameras.

If Canon does not list a package for your Windows version, the device may be obsolete or unsupported. Do not substitute a similarly named model. Check Canon’s operating-system compatibility information and use the newest package Canon provides for that exact device.

Fix 2: Remove stale Canon drivers completely
A normal uninstall can leave an old printer driver in Windows. The remaining package may continue trying to load cnhlx850.dll at startup or whenever a print job is created.

Remove the device
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Canon device.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Repeat for duplicate or offline Canon entries that belong to the same hardware.
- Restart Windows.
Remove the driver package
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
printui /s /t2and press Enter. - In Print Server Properties, open the Drivers tab.
- Select the old Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when offered.
- Confirm, then restart Windows.
If that command does not open the driver list, press Windows key + R, type control printers, and press Enter. Select Print server properties from the window’s toolbar or menu, then use the Drivers tab.
For scanner-only hardware, also check Device Manager:
- Right-click Start and select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, Imaging devices, and Cameras.
- Right-click an old Canon entry and choose Uninstall device.
- Select Attempt to remove the driver for this device if Windows displays that option.
- Restart, then install the correct Canon package.
If the error disappears after this cleanup, the cause was probably a stale or incomplete driver registration rather than a missing Windows system file.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the DLL
Security software can remove a legitimate driver component after a detection, leaving the Canon package incomplete. Do not restore the file automatically, because a modified or malicious DLL can use the same filename.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
cnhlx850.dllor a Canon installation. - Expand the detection and record its original path.
- Check whether the path belongs to a Canon program or driver directory, rather than Downloads, a temporary folder, or an unrelated application directory.
- If the file came from a legitimate Canon installer, verify its digital signature before restoring it.
- If the file is unsigned, has an unexpected publisher, or appeared without Canon software being installed, leave it quarantined.
- Prefer reinstalling the official Canon package instead of restoring an individual file.
- Run a Quick scan in Windows Security. If suspicious behavior continues, use Scan options → Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
To inspect a file’s signature, right-click it in File Explorer, select Properties, open Digital Signatures, and inspect the signer details. The publisher should be consistent with Canon software. A signature check is useful, but it does not prove that the file belongs to the correct device, so the path and installed package must also make sense.
Fix 4: Check the full path and the missing dependency
The wording “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnhlx850.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the DLL but failed to load another module that it depends on.
First, locate the path shown by the Canon utility, event log, or startup entry. A path inside a Canon driver directory or Windows driver-store repository supports the driver explanation. A copy in a user-writable folder, a temporary directory, or an unrelated game folder deserves extra scrutiny.
Do not copy the DLL into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. That can make Windows load the wrong copy and can create an architecture or dependency mismatch.
Public records also disagree about the file’s exact size and architecture. Treat those records as identification clues only. A 64-bit Windows installation can run many 32-bit applications, but a driver component still has to match the Canon package, device, and supported operating system. File size alone cannot identify the correct replacement.
If the file exists but the error says that an entry point cannot be found, the installed Canon package may contain incompatible components. Remove the package and reinstall the model-specific version rather than replacing only cnhlx850.dll.

Fix 5: Repair Windows components only when other files are failing
Because cnhlx850.dll is associated with Canon software rather than being a standard Windows runtime, Windows repair commands will not normally recreate a Canon driver that was uninstalled. They are appropriate when the file is reported under a protected Windows location or when several unrelated system files are also damaged.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM may use Windows Update as a repair source, so keep the computer connected to the internet.
Restart Windows after both commands complete. Test the affected program again.
- If DISM reports that the component store was repaired and SFC reports that corrupt files were fixed, test the program again.
- If SFC reports that it could not repair everything, restart and run it once more.
- If both commands complete successfully but the Canon error remains, return to the Canon driver reinstall. These commands do not replace a third-party Canon package that is missing.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without identifying what changed rarely helps. If the error appears at every boot but no Canon hardware remains installed, an obsolete startup component may still be requesting the DLL.
- Open Settings → Apps → Startup.
- Disable an identifiable Canon startup entry.
- Restart Windows.
- If the error remains, right-click the taskbar and open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Disable the remaining Canon entry if it is clearly associated with the removed software.
- Restart and test again.
Do not delete random registry values based only on the filename. If the requesting program is unclear, perform a clean boot or inspect startup entries with a reputable Autoruns-style diagnostic. The goal is to identify the process that requests the DLL, not to erase unrelated configuration.
System Restore is reasonable if the failure began immediately after a known driver or Windows change and a restore point exists. Open Settings → System → Recovery → Open System Restore, select a restore point from before the failure, and review the affected programs before confirming. Restore can roll back drivers, applications, settings, and updates.

Why regsvr32 usually is not the fix
regsvr32 registers DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a universal repair command, and a printer-driver DLL does not become usable merely because Windows was told to register it.
If you try it and receive an error such as “the module was loaded but the entry point was not found,” that indicates the DLL is not self-registering in the way the command expects. Stop there. Use the Canon installer, which registers the complete driver and its dependencies through the proper setup process.

Is cnhlx850.dll a Windows system file?
No firm evidence shows that it is a universal Windows component. It may appear in an older Windows driver-store path, but available metadata attributes it to Canon and associates it with an installed Canon device package.

Should I install Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not as the first step. There is no reliable evidence connecting cnhlx850.dll to those runtimes. Repair the Canon driver package first.
Can I download the DLL from a random DLL site?
No. The copy may contain malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible version, or missing dependencies. It may silence one message while leaving the damaged Canon installation in place. Use Canon’s official model-specific installer.

Record the exact error wording, the complete path, the program or service that reports it, your Windows version and architecture, the Canon model, whether the file exists, its digital-signature status, and what changed immediately before the problem began.
