Which fix applies to you
Use the first matching situation:
- If the error appeared after Windows Update, a crash, or an unexpected shutdown, repair Windows with DISM and SFC.
- If Windows Security shows that the file was quarantined, verify its path and Microsoft signature before restoring it.
- If the error appears while configuring wired Ethernet or enterprise 802.1X authentication, check Wired AutoConfig and the network adapter.
- If the problem began after installing a driver, update, or application, try System Restore.
- If only one older application reports the error while Windows networking works normally, repair that application after restoring the Windows component.
- If the file exists but still will not load, investigate architecture, dependencies, corruption, and malware instead of copying another DLL over it.
Do not begin by downloading dot3ui.dll from a random DLL archive. A copied file can have the wrong architecture, Windows build, language, or dependencies, and may be modified or malicious.

What dot3ui.dll does
dot3ui.dll is associated with Windows wired networking, specifically the user interface for IEEE 802.3 and 802.1X configuration. Its description is “802.3 Advanced UI,” and it belongs to the same Windows component family as dot3svc.dll, dot3api.dll, and dot3dlg.dll. Microsoft identifies Wired AutoConfig as the service that handles IEEE 802.1X authentication on Ethernet interfaces. Microsoft’s service guidance
A Windows tool, administrative console, network configuration panel, or third-party program that invokes wired-network settings can expose the error. That does not prove the affected application owns the file.

On 64-bit Windows, the normal locations are:
C:WindowsSystem32dot3ui.dll
C:WindowsSysWOW64dot3ui.dll
The naming is counterintuitive:
System32normally contains the native 64-bit system copy.SysWOW64normally contains the 32-bit system copy used by 32-bit programs.
This is part of Windows file-system redirection. Do not swap files between these directories. Microsoft’s file-system redirector documentation
dot3ui.dll is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX redistributable, .NET assembly, or game-specific DLL. Installing those packages is not the normal repair.
What the error messages mean
Windows may show several variations:
The program can't start because dot3ui.dll is missing from your computer.
The code execution cannot proceed because dot3ui.dll was not found.
This application has failed to start because dot3ui.dll was not found.
Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.
There was a problem starting dot3ui.dll.
The specified module could not be found.
dot3ui.dll is either not designed to run on Windows
or it contains an error.
“Missing” and “not found” usually mean Windows could not locate or load the expected component. “The specified module could not be found” can also refer to a dependency of dot3ui.dll, even when the named file is present. The final message usually indicates corruption, an incompatible binary, or a damaged dependency.
Fix 1: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is the safest first repair when the file is genuinely missing or damaged.
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes if User Account Control asks for permission.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for the command to finish. It may appear to pause at a percentage for some time.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Try the program or network task again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then scans protected Windows files and replaces damaged copies using that repaired source. Microsoft documents this sequence in its Windows image repair guidance.
A successful result may say that SFC found corrupt files and successfully repaired them. If the error disappears after restarting, no manual DLL replacement is needed.
If DISM reports that source files could not be found, run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Then use a matching Windows installation source with /Source and /LimitAccess, following Microsoft’s repair-source instructions. The source must match the installed Windows edition and architecture.

Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy makes troubleshooting harder. Outbyte PC Repair can reduce the manual work by showing what its free scan identifies; repairs are performed by the full version, and it is optional rather than required for this Windows repair.
If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, restart, install pending Windows updates, and run DISM followed by SFC again. If the result does not change, continue with System Restore or an in-place Windows repair later in this guide.
Fix 2: Install pending Windows updates
An interrupted or incomplete update can leave related Windows files out of sync.

- In Windows 11, select Windows Update.
- In Windows 10, select Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Check for updates again after restarting.
If Windows Update itself reports errors, use DISM and SFC first, then retry Windows Update. Microsoft provides a Windows Update repair sequence.
On supported Windows 11 systems, you may also see:
Start > Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now
This reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving applications, files, and settings. The wording or availability can vary by Windows installation.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Windows Security may have quarantined the file, although a quarantine notice alone does not prove the file was malicious.

- Open Start.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
dot3ui.dll. - Open the item and inspect its reported path and threat details.
Only consider Restore or Allow on device if all of these are true:
- The file was located in the expected Windows directory.
- Its digital signature identifies Microsoft.
- The detection is consistent with a false positive or damaged system component.
- You have no broader signs of malware.

When the path is unusual, the publisher is unknown, or several system files are affected, leave the file quarantined and repair Windows with DISM, SFC, or matching installation media.
Fix 4: Verify the file location and signature
Do not assume that any file named dot3ui.dll is genuine.

To check whether the expected copy exists:
- Press
Win + E. - Select the address bar.
- Enter:
%windir%System32
- Search for
dot3ui.dll. - On 64-bit Windows, also check:
%windir%SysWOW64
To inspect the file:
- Right-click
dot3ui.dll. - Select Properties.
- Open the Details tab.
- Confirm that the description refers to 802.3 Advanced UI.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Select the signature and choose Details.
- Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.
A file in an application folder may be stale, bundled, or suspicious. Do not copy it into System32 or `SysWOW64 simply because its filename matches.
Known public records show multiple Windows-era versions and both architectures, but that list is not exhaustive. The correct version depends on the installed Windows build, servicing level, architecture, and language.
Fix 5: Check Wired AutoConfig and 802.1X
If the error occurs while configuring wired Ethernet, inspect the service that supports Windows wired authentication.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter:
services.msc
- Press Enter.
- Find Wired AutoConfig.
- Double-click it.
- If Startup type is Disabled, change it to Manual or Automatic according to your organization’s configuration.
- Select Start if the service is stopped.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Retry the Ethernet or 802.1X operation.
On an organization-managed computer, do not change enterprise authentication settings without checking with the administrator. A wired profile, EAP method, certificate, or Group Policy setting may also be damaged. Microsoft documents EAP profile configuration.
Windows Features is not a general-purpose DLL repair tool. Do not enable random optional features in an attempt to recreate dot3ui.dll. Repair the Windows image instead.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the network adapter driver
A driver problem does not normally replace the Windows DLL, but it can trigger the wired-network interface or leave the network configuration unusable.

- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected Ethernet adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
If the issue began after a driver update:
- Open the adapter’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver if the button is available.
- Restart Windows.
If the adapter remains damaged, download the correct driver from the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page, then use Uninstall device in Device Manager only when you are ready to install the replacement. Do not uninstall a working network adapter without ensuring you have a recovery path.
Matching the right adapter, Windows edition, and architecture can be tedious when several driver packages are available. If Windows networking works and only one program reports the error, repair that program after completing the Windows checks.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Select Installed apps in Windows 11, or Apps & features in Windows 10.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings.
- If neither option exists, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer.
Do not copy dot3ui.dll beside the application executable. If the program ships an improper private copy, reinstalling it from a trusted official source is safer than manually replacing the file.
Do not use regsvr32 for this file
Do not run:
regsvr32 dot3ui.dll
regsvr32 is for DLLs that export a registration function such as DllRegisterServer. The available export record for dot3ui.dll lists Dot3CreatePsPage, not DllRegisterServer. Microsoft explains the registration requirement here.
A message saying that DllRegisterServer was not found does not prove that dot3ui.dll is corrupt. It means the file is not a self-registering COM or ActiveX DLL. Microsoft’s regsvr32 reference describes the command’s intended behavior.
Fix 8: Use System Restore after a recent change
Use System Restore if the problem began after a driver, update, utility, or configuration change and a suitable restore point exists.
- Press
Win + R. - Enter:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point created before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, drivers, and installed programs while leaving personal files unchanged. It does not guarantee that every missing file will be restored. Microsoft’s System Restore guide
Fix 9: Perform an in-place Windows repair
If DISM, SFC, updates, and System Restore fail, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair.

Start Windows normally, open the installation media, run setup.exe, and choose the option to keep personal files and apps. Do not boot into a clean-install workflow unless you have backed up your data and intentionally want to remove applications.

Is dot3ui.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. It is a Windows system DLL associated with “802.3 Advanced UI” and wired IEEE 802.3 and 802.1X networking. A Microsoft-signed file-analysis record identifies the publisher as Microsoft Corporation. File identity and export information
Is the error caused by Visual C++ or DirectX?
Not by default. dot3ui.dll is a Windows networking component, not a Visual C++ runtime or DirectX redistributable. Repair Windows before installing unrelated packages.
Should I download the missing DLL?
No. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, a matching Windows installation source, or a verified original recovered through Windows Security. Random copies can be unsafe or incompatible.

Normally, none of those should be done manually. Windows servicing places the correct architecture in the correct directory. On 64-bit Windows, System32 is for the native 64-bit copy and SysWOW64 is for the 32-bit copy.
What if the file exists but Windows still says it is missing?
Check the file’s signature, architecture, and location. The message may refer to a missing dependency. Run DISM and SFC, then check whether related wired-network components are also damaged.
When should I suspect malware?
Investigate malware when the file is outside the Windows directories, lacks a valid Microsoft signature, appeared after an untrusted download, or disappeared along with several unrelated system files. Run Microsoft Defender Offline or another current security scan.
What information should I provide when asking for help?
Include the exact error text, Windows version and architecture, the full path of any dot3ui.dll found, the SFC and DISM results, whether Windows Security quarantined anything, and whether the error occurs in one program or across Windows networking. Do not upload or replace system DLLs before checking their signature and source.
