WIA, or Windows Image Acquisition, is the Microsoft framework that lets scanning applications communicate with imaging devices. cnhw8308.dll is not a general Windows runtime, Visual C++ file, DirectX component, or standard Microsoft system DLL. It is a vendor-specific component installed with a Canon driver package.

The exact PIXMA or PIXUS models that contain this file are not publicly confirmed. Identify the model printed on the device before downloading anything. The same filename can appear in more than one older Canon MP-series package, and version number alone does not prove that a file is correct for your printer.
The safest first fix: reinstall the exact Canon driver
A complete Canon driver installation restores more than the DLL. It also installs the device information file, scanner configuration, dependencies, WIA integration, and the correct architecture.

- Find the printer’s exact model number. Look on the front or top of the printer, or open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Open Canon Support in your browser.
- Search for the exact PIXMA or PIXUS model.
- Open the model’s Drivers, Software & Drivers, or similar section.
- Select your installed Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the package named MP Driver, Printer Driver, or the model’s scanner or multifunction driver.
- Close Canon scanning software.
- If the installer requests it, disconnect the printer’s USB cable.
- Right-click the downloaded installer and select Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup wizard. Reconnect the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners, select the Canon device, and test a scan.
A successful repair usually means the scan preview opens without a DLL error and the Canon scanning utility detects the device. Test from both the Canon utility and Windows Scan if it is installed.
If the model is old, Canon may offer only a package for an earlier Windows release. Windows 11 compatibility is model-dependent. Do not substitute a driver for a similar-looking MP model.

If the error appeared after an update or reinstall
A Windows upgrade, Canon software removal, failed setup, or incomplete rollback can leave an old scanner entry pointing to a file that no longer exists.
Remove the affected Canon device
- Press Windows key + X and select Device Manager.
- Expand Imaging devices, Cameras, or Printers, depending on how Windows lists the hardware.
- Right-click the affected Canon scanner or multifunction device.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If Windows offers Attempt to remove the driver for this device, select it only when you already have the correct Canon installer ready.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon MP Driver installer again.
If the device does not appear, select View → Show hidden devices in Device Manager. Remove only stale entries clearly belonging to the affected Canon model. Do not remove unrelated imaging devices.

Check whether Canon software was quarantined
Antivirus software can remove a driver component after installation or during a later scan.

- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to the Canon installation.
- Check the detected file path and threat details.
- If the file came from an official Canon installer, reinstall the complete driver package instead of restoring an isolated DLL.
- Restore a quarantined file only when its source and detection are understood.

Interpret the exact cnhw8308.dll error
“The program can’t start because cnhw8308.dll is missing”
The Canon driver or a program that uses it cannot find the component. Reinstall the exact Canon MP Driver first.

“Error loading cnhw8308.dll. The specified module could not be found”
This does not always mean the named DLL itself is absent. Windows may have found cnhw8308.dll but failed to load one of its dependencies. A complete Canon reinstall is safer than copying the named file manually.
“cnhw8308.dll is missing or corrupted”
The file may have been deleted, quarantined, or damaged. Check Protection History, then reinstall the official Canon package.

This commonly indicates a damaged or incompatible binary. Check whether you installed the correct package for the Canon model and Windows architecture. Remove the stale driver entry and reinstall from Canon.
“cnhw8308.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error”
The file may be incompatible with the process loading it, damaged, or accompanied by an incompatible driver installation. Do not assume that downloading a different copy will solve it.
Check the WIA service
The DLL is part of the scanner-driver path, while Windows provides the WIA framework and service.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Windows Image Acquisition (WIA).
- Double-click it.
- Set Startup type to Automatic or Manual, depending on the existing Windows configuration.
- If the service is stopped, select Start.
- Select Apply, then OK.
- Test the Canon scanner again.
If WIA will not start, note the error shown in the service dialog. Repair Windows components before reinstalling the Canon driver again.

Repair Windows components
Use this step when multiple Windows components are failing, the Canon installer terminates unexpectedly, or driver installation repeatedly rolls back.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run this command first:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Run the Canon installer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component image, while SFC checks protected Windows files. These commands do not normally recreate a missing Canon driver DLL, but they can repair the Windows servicing environment that prevents the driver from installing. If DISM reports that it cannot find source files, install pending Windows updates, restart, and run the commands again. If SFC says it found corrupt files it could not repair, restart and repeat the Canon installation only after addressing the Windows repair result.
Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Public file records identify known cnhw8308.dll builds as 32-bit. That does not automatically mean the file is wrong on 64-bit Windows. Older 32-bit Canon driver components can be valid when installed as part of the correct Canon package.
The important distinction is between:
- A 32-bit Canon component installed by a legitimate 32-bit driver package.
- A random DLL copied into a 64-bit Windows folder.
- A damaged or mismatched file loaded by the wrong application.
Select the Windows version and architecture offered for your exact Canon model, and let Canon’s installer place the file. Do not choose a different model’s 64-bit package simply because your Windows installation is 64-bit.
If the error persists, right-click the Canon installer, select Properties → Compatibility, and review the compatibility options. Use compatibility mode only when the model’s official documentation or installer requires it. Older hardware may work only from a supported older Windows computer.

What not to do
Do not download the DLL separately
Random DLL download sites can provide the wrong build, architecture, language, or a modified file. A replacement may also lack the INF registration and dependencies that the Canon scanner requires. Manual copying often hides the actual driver problem instead of fixing it.
Use the official Canon support page for the exact printer model. Microsoft Windows Update can also provide drivers, but older Canon scanning packages may require manual installation from the manufacturer.
Do not copy it to System32 or SysWOW64
The correct installation path can differ by Windows version, Canon package, and Driver Store revision. Copying a 32-bit DLL into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder can create a second mismatch and make removal harder.

Do not use regsvr32 as the default fix
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. cnhw8308.dll is a WIA driver component installed through Canon’s driver and INF process. There is no reliable evidence that it should be registered manually.

If the problem began recently
If scanning worked before a recent driver, software, or Windows change:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and drivers.
- Select Next → Finish.
- Test the scanner after Windows restarts.
System Restore can roll back drivers, system files, settings, and installed programs without normally changing personal files. It is not available unless a suitable restore point exists. Microsoft’s guidance is here.
FAQ
Is cnhw8308.dll a Windows file?
No. WIA is a Microsoft Windows imaging framework, but cnhw8308.dll is a Canon-supplied scanner-driver component.
Is it related to Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
There is no verified evidence that those runtime packages install this file. Installing them is not the normal repair for a Canon WIA scanner error.
Can I use a driver for another PIXMA MP model?
Do not assume that you can. The exact model-specific package matters, even when the filename is the same.
Will reinstalling the Canon printer driver fix scanning?
It is the strongest first repair when the scanner component is missing or damaged. Use the package identified for the exact printer model, not a generic DLL download.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the DLL is present?

What if Canon has no Windows 11 driver?
Check whether Canon provides a Windows 10 or earlier package and whether the model is supported on your system. Compatibility mode or a supported older computer may be necessary. If neither works, replacing the aging scanner may be more practical than forcing an unverified DLL into Windows.
