“ This application failed to start because cnmui.dll was not found.” Other variants include “The program can’t start because cnmui.dll is missing from your computer,” “Error loading cnmui.dll,” and “Failed to load cnmui.dll.”
cnmui.dll is a Canon printer-driver file, not a Windows system DLL. It belongs to the Canon BJ Raster Printer Driver for Windows NT 4.0 and is identified as the BJ Printer Driver Interface Driver, so the safest repair is to restore the complete Canon driver package or remove the obsolete printer software that is still trying to load it.

The 60-second answer
Do not download cnmui.dll by itself or copy it into System32. First identify why Windows is calling it:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- If you still use the Canon printer, remove the damaged Canon package and reinstall the exact driver for the printer model and Windows version.
- If you replaced or removed the printer, remove the old printer and its unused driver instead.
- If Windows Security quarantined the file, inspect Protection History and restore it only when it came from a trusted Canon installer or backup.
- If the message says the specified module could not be found, the named DLL may be present but a dependency may be missing.
- Use DISM and SFC only for possible Windows component corruption. They normally do not restore a proprietary Canon driver file.
The historical cnmui.dll records most consistently describe a Win32/x86 Canon driver component. Other indexes associate similarly named files with later Canon BJ or IJ packages, so the filename alone cannot identify the correct replacement.

What cnmui.dll is and is not
cnmui.dll is associated with Canon BJ printer software. Its recorded description is BJ Printer Driver Interface Driver, and the associated product is Canon BJ Raster Printer Driver for Windows NT4.0, published by CANON INC.
That places the file in a printer-driver package rather than in Windows itself. It is not a Microsoft runtime, DirectX component, .NET file, or general-purpose system library. There is no reason to expect it in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64.
Canon’s older BJ printers used separate driver packages for different Windows families, including Windows 95/98, Windows NT 4.0, and Windows 2000. Later Canon packages can contain similarly named files with different product associations. That is why replacing the file with a copy found elsewhere often creates a second problem rather than fixing the first.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The error commonly appears after:
- uninstalling a Canon printer incompletely;
- installing the wrong Canon driver;
- deleting an old printer-driver folder manually;
- replacing the printer;
- restoring or cleaning a disk image;
- an antivirus quarantine;
- a Windows upgrade;
- a failed driver installation;
- launching an old Canon utility or application.
The trigger also tells you where to look. An error at startup usually points to a stale Canon utility or startup reference. An error while printing or opening Printer Properties more strongly suggests a damaged printer package. A legacy application may invoke the driver even when no modern Canon utility is visibly running.
First identify the parent Canon package
Before changing files, record the details that identify the failing component:
- Write down the exact printer model, if known.
- Note whether the error appears at startup, while printing, in Printer Properties, or when launching a specific program.
- If the dialog shows a file path, record the full path.
- Note the executable named in the message, if Windows displays one.
- Press
Win+R, typewinver, and press Enter to record the Windows edition and build. - Check whether Windows is 64-bit under Settings → System → About → System type.
Do not assume that a 64-bit Windows installation needs a 64-bit version of this particular file. The historical NT 4.0 component is generally identified as Win32/x86, and a 32-bit legacy printer driver can be used through the appropriate Windows printing compatibility layer when the operating system supports it. The exact Canon package and operating-system support matter more than matching the bitness of Windows by guesswork.
Fix 1: Reinstall the complete Canon printer driver
This is the best repair when you still use the printer and the error occurs during printing, when opening printer properties, or after a failed Canon driver installation.
Remove the broken printer entry
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the printer entry does not always remove the driver package. Continue with the driver cleanup only after confirming that no other printer uses the same old Canon driver.
Remove the old driver package
- Press
Win+R. - Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- In Print Server Properties, open the Drivers tab.
- Select the obsolete Canon driver.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Confirm and restart Windows.
If the command does not open the dialog, use Control Panel → Devices and Printers, select any printer, and open Print server properties from the toolbar or menu. On older Windows versions, the equivalent controls are under Control Panel → Printers.
Do not remove a Canon driver that is still used by another installed printer. Removing the wrong shared package can make another printer stop working.

Install the correct package
Use Canon’s official support area and search by the exact printer model. Select the package for the Windows version shown by winver. For an old BJ printer, check the operating-system compatibility carefully. A later IJ package is not automatically a replacement for an older BJ or NT 4.0 driver.
Then:
- Download the complete Canon installer from Canon support or use the original Canon installation media.
- Close printer utilities and any application that can print.
- Right-click the installer and choose Run as administrator.
- Follow the setup prompts.
- Connect or power on the printer only when the installer requests it.
- Restart Windows after setup completes.
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Print a test page from the installed printer’s properties.
A successful repair means the printer appears normally, Printer Properties opens without the DLL message, and a test page reaches the printer. If the Canon support page has no package for your current Windows version, the old driver may simply be unsupported. Compatibility mode does not guarantee that an old print driver will work on Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Manually hunting through old driver versions can be difficult because several packages may have similar names while supporting different Canon models and Windows releases. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated driver packages and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies the problem, while driver installation through the full version is optional. It is not a substitute for confirming the printer model or for using Canon’s package when Canon provides one.
Fix 2: Remove the obsolete Canon software
If you no longer use the printer, reinstalling cnmui.dll is usually the wrong objective. A stale startup entry, utility, or print-driver reference may be trying to load the file after the printer has been replaced.
Remove the printer
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the old Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Restart Windows.
Then check the classic printer list:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Devices and Printers.
- Remove any duplicate or offline entry for the retired Canon printer.
- Restart again if Windows requests it.
Remove Canon applications
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Search for Canon printer software, monitor utilities, status tools, or setup programs associated with the retired printer.
- Uninstall only software belonging to the printer you no longer use.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random folders from Program Files, Program Files (x86), or the Windows driver store. Uninstalling through Windows removes registered components more cleanly.

- Press
Win+R. - Run
printui.exe /s /t2. - Open Drivers.
- Confirm that no remaining printer uses the old Canon driver.
- Remove the obsolete Canon driver and driver package.
- Restart Windows.
If the error appears only during startup after these steps, inspect Settings → Apps → Startup and disable an unmistakably obsolete Canon utility. Do not disable unknown entries solely because they contain a DLL name. If Windows still reports the file, note the exact executable or path that is requesting it before making registry changes.
A clean restart with no error is the expected result. If the printer is gone and the message disappears, removal was the correct fix.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine an old driver because it is unusual, outdated, damaged, or counterfeit. It is also possible that a malicious replacement was detected, so do not automatically restore the file.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Open the detection involving
cnmui.dll. - Check its original path, detection details, and source.
- Restore it only if it came from a trusted Canon installer or a known-good backup and you are confident the detection is incorrect.
- If the origin is unknown, leave it quarantined.
- Run a full scan.
- Reinstall the complete Canon driver from trusted installation media or Canon support.
Restoring a quarantined standalone DLL is less reliable than reinstalling the package. A driver may also require companion files, registry settings, permissions, and print-subsystem registration that the isolated DLL does not provide.
Fix 4: Distinguish a missing DLL from a missing dependency
The message “The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that cnmui.dll itself is absent. Windows can display that message when the named DLL exists but one of its dependent modules cannot be loaded.
Check the folder shown in the error or the Canon driver location. If cnmui.dll is present, do not overwrite it immediately. Instead:

- Seamless Multi-Page Handling - Tackle multi-page documents with ease using the Auto Document Feeder (ADF) for quick scanning and copying
- Record its full path.
- Check whether the error occurs only for one printer or application.
- Reinstall the complete Canon package.
- Test from another Windows user account if the error seems profile-specific.
- Restart the Print Spooler service if all printer operations are affected.
To restart Print Spooler:
- Press
Win+R. - Type
services.msc. - Press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler.
- Right-click it and choose Restart.
- Try opening the printer properties or printing again.
If the service will not restart, or every printer fails, investigate the print subsystem and driver store rather than copying a DLL into a Windows folder. Avoid manually deleting driver-store files.
Fix 5: Check for a wrong architecture or wrong Canon package
A mismatched Canon file can produce messages such as:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- “This application is not designed to run on Windows.”
- “The entry point was not found.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “Failed to load cnmui.dll.”
These errors can happen when a BJ, IJ, Windows 2000, Windows XP, or NT 4.0 component is mixed with another package. Multiple Canon printer packages may contain similarly named files, but that does not make them interchangeable.
Use this process:
- Confirm the exact Canon model.
- Confirm the Windows edition and system type.
- Uninstall the old Canon package.
- Restart.
- Install the package selected for that model and operating system.
- Do not copy a DLL from another Canon printer’s folder.
- Test a print operation.
If Canon lists no compatible driver for your version of Windows, the printer may not be usable with its original driver. A newer printer package is not guaranteed to provide compatibility, and Windows compatibility mode is not a reliable solution for old kernel-mode or print-driver components.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 6: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
This is a secondary measure. cnmui.dll is a Canon file, so SFC normally cannot restore it. These commands are useful when Windows component corruption is also preventing drivers or dependencies from loading.
First install pending Windows updates:
- Open Settings → Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart Windows.
Then open an elevated terminal:
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Choose Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
Wait for DISM to finish. Then run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows when both commands complete and test the printer again.
DISM repairs the Windows component store, while SFC checks protected Windows files. Neither command is a replacement for the Canon installer. If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations but cnmui.dll is still missing, that result is expected for a third-party driver file.
Repeatedly running SFC and DISM without knowing which component changed only adds time to the diagnosis. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for broader Windows repair issues and show what needs attention; its free scan identifies problems, while repairs through the full version are optional and do not replace reinstalling the correct Canon package.
Fix 7: Use System Restore after a recent driver change
If the error began immediately after installing a driver, running a cleanup utility, or restoring a disk image, System Restore may return the driver and registry state to an earlier working point.
- Press
Win+R. - Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select a restore point dated before the failure.
- Choose Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Confirm the restore.
- Restart Windows and test the printer.
System Restore affects system files, settings, registry state, and installed programs. It does not normally remove ordinary personal files. If no suitable restore point exists, return to the complete Canon package reinstall rather than attempting to restore a random DLL.
Why downloading or registering cnmui.dll manually fails
A standalone DLL download is risky for several reasons:

- Wireless Print/Copy/Scan
- Up to 2 years of ink included (2)
- Print up to 6,000 black & white / 7,700 color pages using a single set of inks! (1)
- Save up to $1,000 on ink (1)
- 1.35” Square LCD display
- The file may contain malware or have been modified.
- It may belong to a different Canon printer model.
- It may target a different Windows generation.
- It may have the wrong architecture.
- Its dependencies may still be missing.
- It may have incorrect permissions.
- The original driver’s registry and print-spooler setup will still be absent.
There is no verified current official standalone Canon download for cnmui.dll. The safe source is the complete Canon driver package for the exact printer model and operating system, or a verified backup created from that installation.
Do not run regsvr32 cnmui.dll as a general repair.regsvr32` is intended for DLLs that expose the registration interface used by COM or ActiveX components. There is no verified package-specific instruction showing that this Canon printer interface DLL should be manually registered. Printer drivers are installed through their setup package and Windows print-driver management, not by guessing at registration commands.
Visual C++ Redistributables, DirectX, and .NET are also generally irrelevant to this file. Installing them may be appropriate for a different application error, but they do not recreate a missing Canon printer-driver package.

Is cnmui.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with Canon BJ printer software and the Canon BJ Raster Printer Driver for Windows NT 4.0. It should not be treated as a standard Windows component.
Should I put it in System32 or SysWOW64?
No. A Canon installer may place it in a Canon-specific driver directory or the Windows printer-driver store. The correct location is determined by the complete package.
Is cnmui.dll 32-bit or 64-bit?
Historical records generally identify the NT 4.0 file as Win32/x86, but the filename has also been associated with other Canon packages. Do not select a replacement based only on the filename or on whether Windows is 64-bit.
Can SFC restore it?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows components, not Canon’s proprietary printer files.
Recommended Free Tools
Why did it appear after I removed my printer?
The printer may have been removed while a Canon utility, startup entry, or driver reference remained. Remove the unused Canon software and driver package rather than restoring a file you no longer need.
Why does the message appear only at startup?
A stale Canon monitor or startup reference is likely calling the old driver. Identify the executable or path named by the error, remove the obsolete Canon software, and check the Startup settings.
What if reinstalling the Canon driver does not work?
Check the exact model and Windows compatibility, inspect antivirus Protection History, restart Print Spooler, test another Windows account, and determine whether the error names a missing dependency. If the printer is unsupported on modern Windows, replacing the obsolete driver or printer may be more practical than forcing the old package to load.
