Fix 1: Reinstall the exact Canon printer driver

Identify the printer
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Note every Canon printer listed.
- Select the printer that fails, then choose Printer properties or Manage.
- Record the model name exactly.
If several Canon printers or multifunction devices are installed, do not assume they use the same package. Also ask which application produced the error: the Windows print queue, a Canon utility, an accounting application, or a startup item.

Remove the affected printer
- Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected Canon printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Confirm the removal.
- Restart Windows.
Removing the printer does not necessarily remove every Canon driver package. If the error returns, continue with the driver cleanup steps below rather than repeatedly adding the same printer.
Remove the old driver package
- Press Windows + R.
- Enter
printui.exe /s /t2. - Press Enter.
- In Print Server Properties, open the Drivers tab.
- Select the Canon driver that matches the removed printer.
- Choose Remove.
- Select Remove driver and driver package when Windows offers that choice.
- Restart Windows.
Do not delete random folders from C:WindowsSystem32DriverStore. Windows manages the Driver Store, and direct modification can damage other devices or prevent driver servicing.

Install the replacement
- Open Canon’s official Software and Drivers support page.
- Select the exact printer model.
- Select Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the correct architecture when those choices are offered.
- Download the complete printer driver or Canon installation package.
- Run the installer as an administrator.
- Connect the printer only when the installer requests it, unless Canon’s instructions say otherwise.
- Print a Windows test page.
A successful repair means the printer installs without the DLL message, appears with the correct model name, and prints a test page. If the installer reports that the operating system is unsupported, stop and choose the package matching the installed Windows version rather than forcing an older driver.

Windows may provide a compatible printer driver even when the Canon installer is unavailable.
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Open Advanced options.
- Select Optional updates.
- Expand Driver updates.
- Install a relevant Canon or printer update.
- Restart Windows.
- Return to Printers & scanners and add the printer again.
If Windows Update offers no relevant driver, use Canon’s product-specific support page. Do not substitute a similarly named Canon model.
Fix 3: Check antivirus quarantine
Windows Security may have removed the file, or another antivirus product may have quarantined it.
- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Open the detection related to
cnn08cl2fl.dll. - Review the file path, detection name, and action taken.
Do not restore the file merely because the filename appears to belong to Canon. Restore or allow it only when the location, digital signature, and original source are trustworthy. If Defender identified it as a confirmed threat, leave it removed and reinstall the complete driver from Canon instead.

Fix 4: Repair Windows components with DISM and SFC
SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components. They do not reliably restore a third-party Canon printer DLL, so use them as secondary checks rather than as the main Canon repair.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Test the printer again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM can provide the repair source used by SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and retest. If both commands complete without finding a problem, return to the Canon driver package rather than repeating them.

Fix 5: Check the driver architecture
The only publicly indexed build of this filename is reported as 32-bit. That does not establish that it is correct for every 64-bit Windows installation or every Canon printer.

To check Windows architecture:
- Press Windows + I.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
Choose the architecture shown by Canon for your exact model and Windows release. Do not place a 32-bit DLL into System32 or SysWOW64 to make an error disappear. The correct location and registration are determined by the complete driver package.
Fix 6: Deal with a stale printer or startup entry
If the error appears after removing a printer or during Windows startup, an obsolete Canon reference may still exist.
- Remove unused Canon printers from Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Uninstall Canon software that belongs only to the removed printer.
- Restart Windows.
- Open the printer list again and add only the printer you still use.
- Install its current Canon package.
If the message appears at login but not during printing, inspect Task Manager → Startup apps for an obsolete Canon utility. Disable only an entry you can identify. Do not disable random Windows services or delete registry entries without knowing what created them.

Usually, no.
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide a self-registration entry point called DllRegisterServer. A printer layout-filter DLL is loaded as part of the print-driver pipeline and is not automatically a self-registering COM component.
Running a command such as this is therefore not a general repair:
regsvr32 cnn08cl2fl.dll
It may produce “entry point not found,” an architecture error, or another message. Repair the printer package through its installer instead.

Random DLL download sites can provide malware, a wrong version, a wrong architecture, or a file with missing dependencies. Even a genuine DLL may not work because the INF file, catalog, print processor, registry configuration, or related files are absent.
Never copy it into:
C:WindowsSystem32C:WindowsSysWOW64- The Windows Driver Store
- A Canon driver folder belonging to another model
Use Windows Update, Canon’s official support page, or original Canon installation media. The complete package is the safe source.
If the error remains after reinstalling
Check the exact failure path:
- Open Event Viewer.
- Select Windows Logs → Application and System.
- Also inspect Applications and Services Logs → Microsoft → Windows → PrintService.
- Look for entries recorded when the error occurs.
- Note the printer name, driver name, DLL path, and any dependent module.
Check the Canon installer log if the package created one. Confirm that the installed printer is using the intended driver rather than an older Canon driver left on the system.

For compatible printers, Windows 10 and Windows 11 may support the modern IPP printing platform, which can avoid some legacy manufacturer-specific drivers. If the printer supports it, remove the old queue and add it using the current Windows printer workflow.
If Windows itself has multiple unrelated failures, use Settings → System → Recovery and review Fix problems using Windows Update where available. This repairs or reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings on supported Windows 11 systems. Use System Restore only if a suitable restore point predates the failure.
