The 60-second answer
rasgcw.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component named RAS Wizard Pages. It belongs to Remote Access Service, or RAS, and provides interface components used by network, dial-up, broadband, and VPN connection wizards.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not download a replacement DLL from a random website. First install pending Windows updates, restart, then run DISM followed by System File Checker from an elevated Command Prompt:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
sfc /scannow
Microsoft recommends running DISM and SFC in that order because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as its source.
What rasgcw.dll does
RAS is the Windows family of services and APIs used for remote-access connections. rasgcw.dll contains pages and other interface resources used by connection wizards. It may work alongside RAS files such as rasman.dll, rasapi32.dll, rasdlg.dll, and networking components.
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program or VPN client that triggered the message. A Windows network wizard, a VPN setup action, an old dial-up connection, or a damaged application that calls Windows networking APIs could be involved.

The file is not:
- A Visual C++ runtime
- A DirectX component
- A .NET assembly
- A game middleware file
- A general-purpose DLL that should be copied into every application folder
Expected locations
On 32-bit Windows, the normal system location is:
%WINDIR%System32
On 64-bit Windows:
- Native 64-bit system files normally reside in
%WINDIR%System32. - The 32-bit system copy normally resides in
%WINDIR%SysWOW64.
The names are confusing, but this is how Windows manages 32-bit compatibility. A 32-bit application may load the SysWOW64 copy, while a 64-bit process normally loads the System32 copy. The calling process determines which architecture is required.
Microsoft explains this redirection in its File System Redirector documentation.
Why the error occurs
The most likely causes are:
- A corrupted or missing Windows component
- An incomplete Windows update
- Component-store corruption
- Antivirus quarantine
- A missing dependency used by the RAS interface
- A mismatched 32-bit or 64-bit file
- Disk corruption, malware, or an aggressive system cleaner
- A damaged VPN, network, or older application installation
“Specified module could not be found” does not always mean that rasgcw.dll itself is absent. Windows may have found the named file but failed to load a dependency that it requires.
Fix 1: Complete Windows Update, then restart
A failed or partially installed update can leave related RAS files at inconsistent versions.
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately require a restart.
- Try the VPN, network wizard, or application again.
If Windows Update reports an error:
- Open Settings.
- Go to System and select Troubleshoot.
- Select Other troubleshooters.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Restart and check for updates again.
You can also follow Microsoft’s Windows Update troubleshooting guidance.
If the error began immediately after a network driver, VPN client, or security-software update, note that timing. Do not assume the driver caused the missing DLL, but it may have exposed a damaged RAS dependency.
Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
This is the primary repair for a missing or corrupted Windows copy of rasgcw.dll.
Run DISM
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Press Enter and wait for the operation to finish.
The process may appear paused for a while. Do not close the window while DISM is working.
Run System File Checker
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Then restart Windows and test the failing feature again.
A successful result usually says that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found and repaired corrupted files. If SFC repaired files, the restart is important because the repaired component may not be active until Windows reloads it.
Repeating SFC without knowing whether the component store is healthy usually adds little. Outbyte PC Repair can show what needs attention and automate parts of the repair process, while its repair functions require the full version; Windows servicing remains the appropriate first repair path.
If DISM cannot find source files
Use a matching Windows installation source only if normal DISM cannot obtain repair files.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe source should match your Windows edition and, as closely as practical, your installed build. Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching repair source. Do not use an arbitrary Windows folder from another computer.
If SFC still cannot repair the files, restart and run DISM again. Continued failure points to a deeper component-store or installation problem.
Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software can quarantine a legitimate system file after a false detection, although the filename alone does not prove that a file is safe.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
rasgcw.dll. - Check the detected path, publisher information, and detection details.
Do not blindly restore a quarantined file because its name matches the expected DLL. Restore it only after verifying that it is a genuine Microsoft system file and that the detection is false. Then run DISM and SFC so Windows can restore the correct protected copy.
Microsoft describes these entries in Protection History.
If the file was found outside the normal Windows directory, especially inside a temporary folder or an unfamiliar application directory, scan the computer before allowing anything. A malware scan is more appropriate than manually replacing the file.
Fix 4: Check the architecture and actual file path
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into System32 or a 64-bit DLL into SysWOW64.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTo check your Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Look at System type.
To check the normal locations, enter each path in File Explorer:
Rank #2
- STREAMLINED & INTUITIVE UI, DVD FORMAT | Intelligent desktop | Personalize your experience for simpler efficiency | Powerful security built-in and enabled.
- OEM IS TO BE INSTALLED ON A NEW PC with no prior version of Windows installed and cannot be transferred to another machine.
- OEM DOES NOT PROVIDE SUPPORT | To acquire product with Microsoft support, obtain the full packaged “Retail” version.
- PRODUCT SHIPS IN PLAIN ENVELOPE | Activation key is located under scratch-off area on label.
- GENUINE WINDOWS SOFTWARE IS BRANDED BY MIRCOSOFT ONLY.
%WINDIR%System32
%WINDIR%SysWOW64
The second path exists on 64-bit Windows. Do not infer which copy is needed solely from the error message. A 32-bit application requires the 32-bit system copy, while a 64-bit application normally requires the native copy.
The safest way to restore either copy is Windows servicing through Windows Update, DISM, and SFC. Selecting a file based only on its bitness can still leave you with the wrong build, signature, language resources, or dependencies.
Fix 5: Repair the VPN or network feature
If the error appears when creating or using a VPN, dial-up, broadband, or other Remote Access connection, repair the related Windows networking configuration after completing DISM and SFC.
- Open Settings.
- Select Network & internet.
- Open the relevant VPN, Dial-up, or network settings.
- Remove the broken connection if it is no longer usable.
- Restart Windows.
- Create the connection again using the provider’s current settings.
For a third-party VPN:
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Select the VPN client.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Use Repair or Reset where provided.
- If that does not help, uninstall it, restart, and reinstall it from the vendor’s official installer.
Do not copy rasgcw.dll into the VPN folder unless the VPN vendor explicitly instructs you to do so. A Windows system DLL in an application directory can create a version or search-path conflict.
Fix 6: Update or reinstall the network driver
A damaged network stack or driver can cause a RAS connection to fail even when rasgcw.dll is present.
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected adapter.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows.
If the problem began after a driver update:
- Open the adapter’s Properties.
- Select the Driver tab.
- Choose Roll Back Driver, if available.
- Restart and test the connection.
For a clean reinstall, use the computer or adapter manufacturer’s official support page to obtain the correct driver. Outbyte Driver Updater can identify stale drivers and simplify version hunting, but installation through the full version is optional and the manufacturer’s driver remains the definitive source.

regsvr32 is a registration tool for DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general repair command for missing, corrupted, or dependency-related Windows files.

regsvr32 rasgcw.dll
A particular build may expose registration-related exports, but that does not mean manually registering it is required. Registering the wrong architecture or build can produce errors without repairing the protected Windows component.
Use regsvr32 only when a specific Microsoft or application repair procedure explicitly requires registration. Microsoft documents the command’s purpose in its regsvr32 reference.
Fix 8: Repair one application if only it fails
If Windows networking works normally and only one older application reports rasgcw.dll, the application may be damaged or incorrectly handling a Windows dependency.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Open its menu and choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- If Repair does not help, uninstall the application.
- Restart Windows.
- Install the latest version from the application vendor’s official installer.
For a game, use the launcher’s Verify, Repair, or Scan files function instead of downloading a DLL. Reinstalling Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET is not an evidence-based fix for rasgcw.dll unless the error also names a missing component from one of those runtimes.

Why downloading rasgcw.dll is unsafe
Avoid DLL download sites websites and file copies from forums or unrelated applications. A downloaded replacement can have:
- The wrong Windows build
- The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture
- Missing language resources
- Different dependencies
- No trustworthy signature
- Malware or tampering
It may also hide the actual problem, such as component-store corruption or a missing dependency. The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching installation source, SFC, Windows installation media, System Restore, or a repair installation.
Microsoft’s advanced system-file repair guidance covers manual replacement only as a carefully controlled recovery procedure using a known-good matching copy.
Fix 9: Use System Restore or a repair installation
Use System Restore when the error began after a known driver, VPN, update, cleaner, or security-software change.
- Open Start.
- Search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Review the affected programs and updates.
- Start the restoration and let Windows restart.
System Restore can remove recently installed software and updates, so it is not the first step. Microsoft explains the process in its System Restore documentation.
If DISM and SFC cannot repair Windows, and the problem affects multiple built-in features, use a Windows repair installation or in-place upgrade with matching installation media. Back up important files first and follow Microsoft’s current installation instructions. This reinstalls Windows system components while aiming to preserve personal files and applications, but the available options depend on the edition and installation method.
Frequently asked questions
Is rasgcw.dll a Microsoft file?
Yes. rasgcw.dll is the Microsoft Windows RAS Wizard Pages component. Its presence is associated with Windows Remote Access Service and network connection wizards.
Does it belong to a VPN?
It can be involved in Windows VPN and Remote Access workflows, but the filename alone cannot identify the VPN client or connection that triggered the error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Should I install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
Not for this file alone. Those packages do not provide the normal Windows RAS component. Install or repair one only when the error specifically names a dependency from that runtime.
Does “specified module could not be found” prove the DLL is missing?
No. Windows may be reporting a missing dependency required by rasgcw.dll. Repair Windows components first and investigate the calling application if the error remains.
What if SFC says it repaired files but the error continues?
Restart Windows, retry the exact operation, and check whether only one application fails. If it does, repair that application. If multiple Windows networking features fail, rerun DISM and inspect Event Viewer for the failing module or service.
Can I manually replace the file?
Only as an advanced recovery procedure using a known-good copy from matching Windows installation media. Do not use a random download or copy a file between architectures.
When should I use System Restore?
Use it when the problem clearly follows a recent driver, update, VPN installation, or system-cleaning change and DISM/SFC did not resolve the issue.
