What you need before starting
Cobblemon Academy is a Minecraft Java Edition modpack. The underlying Cobblemon project supports Java Edition in client and server environments and offers Fabric and NeoForge variants, but the Academy release covered here is a Fabric pack for Minecraft 1.21.1. Your server and every player’s client must use the same Academy release, Minecraft version, and Fabric environment.
- A legal installation of Minecraft Java Edition.
- A launcher that can install CurseForge packs. The Cobblemon project recommends the Modrinth App and lists Prism Launcher as an alternative.
- A machine you can leave online, or a managed Minecraft host that supports custom Fabric files and archive uploads.
- The matching Academy client pack and server-files archive.
- A backup location for world saves before any update.
The official Cobblemon project also states that “Cobblemon does NOT have an official server.” A public Academy server operated by the pack publisher is therefore separate from the private server you create.

Choose the exact Academy release first
Do not download the newest client and an older server archive, or the reverse. Open the Cobblemon Academy 2.0 project’s CurseForge file list, identify the release you intend to run, and select the server archive with the same version number.
| Release or archive | Minecraft and loader | File details | Date and notes |

| Cobblemon Academy Server Files 2.3.0 | Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric | 331.0 MB | Uploaded February 13, 2026; the notes document a client crash that can occur while joining |
The project page displayed 508,132 total downloads in 2026, while the 2.3.0 server-files archive displayed 5.1K downloads. Those counts can help you recognize the project, but they do not make different versions interchangeable.

Download the official server files
- Install the Academy client profile in your launcher and note its complete version string, such as
2.0-2.6.0. - Open the Academy 2.0 project on CurseForge and switch to its file list.
- Find the server-files entry carrying the identical Academy version. Choose Cobblemon Academy Server Files, not a client-only modpack download.
- Download the archive and retain an untouched copy. If you are using an older client profile, select its older matching archive rather than silently upgrading one side.
- Before extracting or updating anything, make a separate backup of the existing world if this is an established server.
The 2.3.0 and 2.4.0 archives are each shown as 331.0 MB. The current 2.6.0 server archive’s size is not stated on the project page, so do not use file size as a substitute for the version number.
Self-hosting: deploy the archive on your own machine
1. Prepare a dedicated server folder
Create a new directory for this server and use a Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric server installation. Keep the directory dedicated to this pack so unrelated mods, old configuration files, or another Minecraft version cannot be copied into it accidentally. The server loader and the client loader must be compatible with the selected Academy release.
2. Extract the server-files archive
Extract the complete archive into the server directory. Preserve its directory structure. Do not copy only the visible mods folder and assume that is sufficient; server distributions can include configuration, scripts, datapacks, and other files required by the pack.
3. Start the server once
Launch the Fabric server from that directory using the startup method provided by your server software. The first run creates the normal Minecraft files and stops or pauses for EULA confirmation. Read the generated log so you can see whether Fabric loads the Academy mods or reports a missing file.

4. Accept the Minecraft EULA
Open the generated eula.txt, read the license, and change the EULA setting to accept it only if you agree. Start the server again after saving the file. A server that has not accepted the EULA will not finish booting for players.
5. Configure the ordinary Minecraft server settings
Review the generated server properties and your host operating system’s settings before inviting anyone:
- Set the server name and gameplay properties you want.
- Choose an appropriate memory allocation for the pack and the number of players. The Academy documentation does not prescribe a specific RAM value, so monitor startup and runtime logs rather than copying an unsupported number.
- Enable a whitelist if the world is for a defined group.
- Set operator permissions only for trusted administrators.
- Configure the listening port and network access in your server and router. If friends are outside your home network, they normally need your reachable address and the port forwarded to the server machine.
- Decide where automated and manual world backups will be stored, preferably on a different disk or machine.
6. Restart and test locally
Stop the process cleanly, start it again, and join from the same machine or local network first. A local test separates mod-loading problems from router, firewall, DNS, or port-forwarding problems. Confirm that the world loads, the expected Academy content appears, and no repeated errors fill the startup log.
7. Test with one remote player
After the local join succeeds, have one player outside your local network connect. Check the firewall and port forwarding if the remote test fails. Add the player to the whitelist only after the server and client versions have been verified.

Managed hosting: the shorter operational path
A managed host removes much of the operating-system, process, backup, and network administration, but it does not remove version matching. The control panel must still run Minecraft 1.21.1 with Fabric and the same Academy release installed on clients.
- Create the server instance with Minecraft 1.21.1 and Fabric selected.
- Use the panel’s modpack installer if it offers the exact Academy release, or upload and extract the matching server-files archive.
- Check the installed file list before starting. Remove an automatically selected release if it differs from the client profile you intend to use.
- Start the instance, accept the EULA through the panel or generated file, and wait for a complete startup.
- Set the whitelist, operator permissions, server properties, scheduled backups, and access details.
- Connect with one client using the identical Academy version before distributing the address to the rest of the group.
The Academy project page recommends BisectHosting for private worlds and displays a 25% first-month discount code. Treat the discount, eligible regions, current price, and affiliate terms as time-sensitive: verify them on the live offer before relying on them. Any other provider must support custom archive uploads or the exact Fabric modpack installer, and must be configured for Minecraft 1.21.1.

Self-hosting or managed hosting?
| Consideration | Self-hosted machine | Managed host |
|---|---|---|
| Setup effort | You manage Java/server processes, file deployment, backups, firewall rules, and network configuration. | The control panel handles more of the process and network administration. |
| Control | Direct access to files, logs, operating-system settings, and every configuration option. | Convenient controls, with less low-level access depending on the provider. |
| Support | You rely on your own troubleshooting and community documentation. | The host may provide operational support for its panel and machine. |
| Cost | Uses existing hardware and bandwidth, although electricity and Internet capacity still matter. | Adds a recurring hosting fee; current pricing varies by provider and plan. |
| Compatibility | Must run Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric and the same Academy release as every client. | Must run Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric and the same Academy release as every client. |
Install the matching client pack and connect
- Have each player install Minecraft Java Edition and a supported launcher.
- In the launcher’s CurseForge profile, install the same Academy file-list version used by the server. For example, a server running 2.0-2.6.0 requires clients on 2.0-2.6.0, not merely “the latest Academy.”
- Let the launcher finish downloading every mod and dependency. Do not add personal mods until a clean connection works.
- Start the profile once so the client creates its configuration, then close and relaunch if the launcher requests it.
- Enter the server address supplied by the host. A managed host usually displays this in its panel; a self-hosted server owner must provide the reachable address and configured port.
The independent installation guidance explicitly tells players to use the same file-list version. “Minecraft 1.21.1” alone is not enough: a different Academy release, Fabric loader, or mod list can prevent the handshake even when the base game version matches.
What private servers do not include
The publisher’s warning is direct: “Not all features shown from 2.0’s public server are available in privately hosted worlds at this time.” The named exclusions are:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Raids
- Dungeons
- Hideouts
- Ranked battles
- The safari world
- Daycare
- The shop system
These are limitations of private-world compatibility, not a sign that your files were installed incorrectly. The publisher says those features may gain private-host support in future updates but gives no timetable. Do not promise players that changing a server property, granting operator status, or installing an extra copy of the public server will enable them.
Troubleshoot a failed connection in the right order
When a player cannot join, check the layers from most specific to most general. Have the player capture the exact disconnect message and the server owner inspect the startup and latest-join logs.
- Minecraft version: confirm both sides are on Minecraft 1.21.1.
- Fabric loader: verify that the server and client are using Fabric, not a NeoForge profile or an unrelated loader build.
- Academy release: compare the complete file-list version, including the 2.0-2.6.0, 2.4.0, or 2.3.0 designation.
- Complete mod list: reinstall the client profile if a mod is missing, duplicated, or manually replaced. The server archive should be complete and unmodified for the first test.
- Server startup log: look for a failed dependency, a mixin error, a rejected registry entry, or a server that never reached its ready state.
- Network path: if the server is healthy and local joins work, check the firewall, router forwarding, host address, and port.
- Client relaunch: close and reopen the launcher and Minecraft after a crash, then retry once.
The documented 2.3.0 join crash
The 2.3.0 server-files notes identify a bug that may crash clients while they are attempting to join a server on that version. The documented workaround is to relaunch the client and try again. That advice is specific to the 2.3.0 situation; it is not a guarantee for every release or every crash. If a second attempt fails, return to the version, Fabric, mod-list, log, and network checks above.
Back up before changing versions
The server-file notes recommend backing up or duplicating world saves before updates so progress can be recovered if an unforeseen issue appears. Use this sequence:
Rank #4
- Skins! We have biome settlers, city folk, town folk, and more!
- The Nether and all its inhabitants. Fight Ghasts and make friends with Pigmen
- Cross platform play for up to five players between Pocket Edition and Windows 10
- Revamped touch controls, controller support, and a controller mapping screen
- Enhanced Weather effects! Accumulating snow and more
- Tell players to disconnect and stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the complete world-save directory to a separate location and label it with the old Academy version and date.
- Keep the existing server directory intact until the new version has passed a test.
- Install the matching newer server archive in a separate directory or after making a restorable copy of the old files.
- Update every client profile to that same release before allowing normal play.
- Start the updated server, watch the log for errors, and test with one player.
- If the world fails to load or progress is missing, stop the server and restore the labeled backup rather than repeatedly starting the damaged copy.
Never update only the server and ask players to “try the newest version.” The pack release is part of the connection requirement, and a world backup is the practical recovery path when an update behaves unexpectedly.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Operational checklist for the first play session
Write down the exact Academy version, Minecraft version, Fabric loader, server address, configured port, administrator names, and backup location. Sharing this short checklist with players prevents the common mistake of installing whichever profile appears first in a launcher.
- Confirm the server reaches its ready state without repeating errors.
- Join locally, then test one connection from outside the local network.
- Verify that the whitelist accepts intended players and rejects an unlisted test account.
- Give operator privileges only to the people who will administer the world.
- Make a manual backup after the first successful test, then schedule the host’s backup feature or establish a repeatable copy routine.
- Keep the untouched downloaded archive and the working server folder separately labeled, especially when several Academy releases are stored on the same machine.
For a home server, uptime depends on the host computer, power, Internet connection, firewall, and router remaining available. A managed service shifts those operational responsibilities to the provider, but you still need your own world backups and a record of the exact release installed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsHow to tell whether the setup is ready
A Cobblemon Academy private server is ready for its group when the server reaches a clean Fabric startup on Minecraft 1.21.1, the server archive and every client profile carry the same Academy release, one local and one remote connection have succeeded, whitelist and operator settings are intentional, and a restorable world backup exists. At that point, players can join knowing that the private world is a supported slice of the pack rather than a replica of every feature shown on the public Academy server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I get the Cobblemon Academy server files?
Open the Cobblemon Academy 2.0 project on CurseForge, switch to the file list, and download the Cobblemon Academy Server Files archive with the same version as the client profile. Do not substitute the client-only modpack download.
Can I run the public Academy server features privately?
No. The publisher says private worlds currently lack raids, dungeons, hideouts, ranked battles, the safari world, daycare, and the shop system. No timetable is given for private-host support.
Best Value
- Play and share with friends on console, mobile and Windows 10
- discover community creations in the new in-game store
- access new mini games and game modes through servers
Do all players need the exact same modpack version?
Yes. Every client must use the same Academy file-list version, Minecraft 1.21.1, Fabric environment, and complete mod set as the server. “Latest version” is not a sufficient match.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →What is the difference between the 2.3.0 and 2.4.0 server archives?
Both target Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric and are listed at 331.0 MB, but they are separate Academy releases uploaded on February 13 and March 31, 2026. Use the archive matching your chosen client release.
Why does a player crash while joining a 2.3.0 server?
The 2.3.0 server-file notes document a join crash that may clear after closing and relaunching the client. If it persists, verify versions, Fabric, the complete mod list, logs, and network settings.
Should I self-host or rent a server?
Self-hosting costs no recurring provider fee and gives direct file and configuration control, but you manage Java processes, networking, backups, hardware, and bandwidth. A managed host costs a recurring fee and reduces administration while offering less low-level control.
How much RAM does Cobblemon Academy require?
The Academy documentation does not specify a required RAM figure. Allocate memory appropriate to your machine and player count, then use startup and runtime logs to identify resource problems rather than relying on an unsupported fixed number.
What should I back up before updating?
Stop the server cleanly and copy the complete world-save directory to a separate location. Label it with the old Academy version and date, keep the old server files until testing succeeds, and restore the labeled copy if the update damages loading or progress.
Does Cobblemon have an official server?
The Cobblemon project states that Cobblemon does not have an official server. A publisher-operated public Academy server is separate from the private server you host.
The Bottom Line
Use the matching CurseForge server archive, run it on Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric, and require every player to install the identical Academy release. Test locally and remotely, secure the world with a whitelist and backups, and set expectations that private hosting does not include every public Academy feature.
