Run OctoDNS on your Linux VPS as a controlled DNS-as-code deployment service: keep the desired zone in Git, validate it, preview a plan, review every record change, apply deliberately, and verify the authoritative answers. OctoDNS 1.22.0 documentation describes this workflow, but provider plugins, APIs, DNSSEC behavior, and limits remain provider-specific. Start with a disposable zone because OctoDNS can remove records that are absent from the desired configuration.

What OctoDNS does—and what the VPS is responsible for
OctoDNS is a collection of tools and patterns for managing DNS across one or more providers with infrastructure-as-code practices. Your YAML files describe the desired records; a source provider reads those files, target providers compare them with live zones, and the sync command creates a plan or applies it.

The VPS is the execution host, not necessarily the DNS host. It needs Python, network access to each provider API, and securely supplied credentials. Authoritative name servers continue to be operated by the DNS provider you configure. OctoDNS does not eliminate DNS propagation, delegation changes, provider rate limits, unsupported record types, or DNSSEC-specific behavior.
The useful mental model is:
- Source: version-controlled YAML containing the intended records.
- Processors: optional transformations applied while zones are populated.
- Targets: provider integrations that receive the resulting records.
- Plan: a calculated list of creates, updates, and deletes.
- Apply: the same plan executed against the target APIs.
- Verify: DNS queries and reports confirming that the provider now matches the source.
Git history and pull-request review become your DNS change log. A second provider can be configured as another target when its record model and feature set are compatible with your zone.

Prerequisites and a safe VPS layout
Minimum preparation
- A Linux VPS with Python 3 and
venvsupport. - Outbound HTTPS access to the selected DNS provider APIs.
- An account or API identity with only the permissions needed to read and change the managed zone.
- A Git repository for configuration and review.
- A test or disposable domain for the first plans and applies.
Keep the repository separate from secrets. Environment variables, a protected secret store, or the VPS service manager should provide credentials at runtime; never commit access keys to YAML or Git.
Create an isolated Python environment
- Create a working directory and enter it:
mkdir -p ~/octodns && cd ~/octodns. - Create the virtual environment:
python3 -m venv env. The OctoDNS basic-setup example uses the equivalentpython3 -mvenv envform. - Activate it:
source env/bin/activate. - Install OctoDNS:
python -m pip install octodns. - Install the current plugin package required by your target provider, following that plugin’s documentation and compatibility requirements. Provider packages and credential options can change independently of OctoDNS.
Check the installed command set before proceeding:
octodns-versionsThe documentation currently identifies the OctoDNS release line as 1.22.0. Treat that as time-sensitive: confirm the installed version and plugin versions on the VPS before production use.

Configure providers and zones in YAML
Provider definitions
OctoDNS configuration has a providers section and a zones section. A YAML source reads files from a directory; a target names a provider class and its credentials. This representative configuration uses the Route 53 integration as a target:

- route53directory points to the zone-file directory. default_ttl supplies a TTL when an individual record does not specify one. The env/ prefix tells OctoDNS to read credentials from environment variables rather than literal values.

Zone mapping and matching
The trailing dot in example.com. identifies the fully qualified zone name. The zone’s sources list identifies where desired records come from; targets identifies where OctoDNS should plan and apply them. The configuration guide also documents ordering controls and wildcard zone matching for installations with many zones. Validate those patterns before enabling broad matching.
Validate the configuration schema
OctoDNS publishes a JSON Schema and provides a validation command. Run validation before contacting a provider:
octodns-validate --config-file=config/octodns.yamlFix syntax, missing files, invalid record structures, and provider configuration errors before generating a plan. Validation confirms that the configuration is structurally acceptable; it does not prove that an API identity has sufficient permissions or that every provider feature is supported.

Write the zone file correctly
Apex, hostnames, and wildcards
Create config/example.com.yaml with the records you want OctoDNS to own:

value: example.com.The empty key represents the zone apex, so the first record answers for example.com.. A name such as www is relative to the zone. The records documentation uses * for a wildcard name; add one only when wildcard behavior is intentional and does not conflict with explicit names.

Record details to decide before syncing
- Use the record type and value format required by OctoDNS and the target provider.
- Set an explicit TTL when a record needs a value different from the provider definition’s default.
- Represent multi-value records with the documented
valueslist rather than relying on provider-specific ordering. - Check whether the target supports the record type, alias behavior, routing policy, DNSSEC metadata, or other advanced fields you plan to use.
- Keep names fully qualified where the record format requires a trailing dot, especially for CNAME, MX, and NS targets.
Do not copy every live provider record blindly into a hand-edited file. For an existing zone, use the dump or populate workflow described below, then review the result for provider-only metadata and unsupported fields.
Use the plan-review-apply-verify loop
1. Generate a plan without changing DNS
From the repository root, run:
octodns-sync --config-file=config/octodns.yamlWithout --doit, OctoDNS calculates and prints the proposed changes. Read every create, update, and delete. A delete is not automatically an error: it may represent an intentional removal from the desired state. It is dangerous when the source file is incomplete, the wrong zone was selected, or a provider returned records that were never imported.

2. Review the diff as a change set
- Confirm the zone name and target provider.
- Check that apex,
www, mail, verification, delegation, and service-discovery records are present. - Investigate unexpected deletes before proceeding.
- Compare TTL changes with your application and caching expectations.
- Have another operator review production changes through Git.
OctoDNS performs safety validation during the sync lifecycle. Avoid bypassing those checks with force options unless you understand the consequence and have an approved recovery plan.
3. Apply only the reviewed plan
octodns-sync --config-file=config/octodns.yaml --doitRun the non-applying command again after the apply. A matching target should produce “No changes were planned.” If a new plan still contains changes, stop and determine whether the provider normalized values, rejected part of the update, or the source and target are not modeling the same data.
4. Verify authoritative and recursive answers
First discover the zone’s authoritative servers:

dig www.example.com CNAMEUse octodns-report when you need a provider-oriented report of the resulting state. Authoritative answers can change immediately while recursive resolvers continue serving cached data until TTL expiry; that is normal DNS behavior, not proof that the apply failed.
Migrate an existing DNS zone
Import before improving
For a live zone, the safest first objective is equivalence, not cleanup. Use octodns-dump or a populate configuration to bring the provider’s current records into YAML. Keep that first import as close as possible to the existing state, commit it, and generate a plan before making functional changes.
octodns-dump --config-file=config/octodns.yamlCommand options and provider-specific dump behavior can vary by installed release, so inspect octodns-dump --help and the plugin documentation on the VPS. Confirm that the resulting files contain essential mail, verification, delegation, and service records before assigning the target to production.
Adopt incrementally
- Export or dump the current zone and preserve an untouched backup.
- Normalize the YAML only enough for validation and a near-zero-change plan.
- Run
octodns-validate, then a no-apply sync. - Resolve every unexpected difference with the current DNS owner.
- Apply the equivalent state during a controlled window.
- Make one class of improvement at a time—such as TTLs or an additional record—and review each plan.
The migration guidance documents octodns.lenient: true for records that are temporarily non-compliant. Treat lenient mode as a migration aid, not a permanent substitute for correcting invalid or unsupported data. Remove the exception once the zone conforms to the target’s requirements.
Choose a provider by capability, not familiarity
OctoDNS has integrations for cloud DNS, commercial managed DNS, BIND/RFC-2136, and other services. The existence of an integration does not guarantee feature parity. Compare providers against the records and operational guarantees your zone actually needs.

Check the provider’s current plugin and API documentation immediately before deployment. Integration classes, package names, authentication fields, and supported record features can change independently of the OctoDNS core release.

Operate OctoDNS safely on a VPS
Protect the execution environment
- Run the virtual environment under a dedicated Unix account with no interactive administrative privileges.
- Restrict repository and environment-variable access to the deployment account.
- Keep provider credentials out of shell history, logs, Git, and rendered plans.
- Pin and review dependency versions in the deployment process, then update them deliberately.
- Back up the repository and retain the last known-good zone files.
Schedule drift detection, not blind applies
A scheduled job or CI runner can execute validation and a no-apply plan to reveal out-of-band changes. Require human approval before adding --doit for production unless your organization has explicitly accepted fully automated DNS changes. If automation applies changes, log the commit identifier, target zone, plan output, and verification result.
Understand ownership and deletion
OctoDNS assumes ownership of the managed zone. Records missing from the desired state may be treated as records to delete. This is why a disposable zone, a complete import, and peer review are more important than simply getting the first command to succeed. Never point a newly configured target at a critical zone until the no-apply plan shows only changes you can explain.
Troubleshoot common failures
The command cannot find a zone file
Confirm that the zone key in octodns.yaml exactly matches the file name and directory configured for YamlProvider. Check the current working directory: a relative directory: ./config is resolved from where the command runs, not necessarily from the file’s physical location.
Authentication or permission errors
Verify that the expected environment variables exist in the same shell or service context that runs OctoDNS. Confirm the identity can list the zone and perform the record operations required by the plan. A credential available in an interactive shell may be absent from cron, systemd, or CI.
The plan contains unexpected deletes
Stop before applying. Compare the live provider zone with the YAML source, check for a wrong account or zone, and import missing records with the dump or populate workflow. Do not silence the difference with force; that turns an unexplained plan into destructive change.

Check record syntax, TTL bounds, routing fields, and provider-specific restrictions. Remove or transform unsupported metadata, or choose a target that supports the feature. If a migration record is temporarily non-compliant, use the documented lenient setting only for the transition and track its removal.
DNS answers differ after apply
Query the authoritative server directly, then a recursive resolver. If authoritative data is correct but recursive data is old, wait for the previous TTL to expire. If authoritative data is wrong, inspect the applied plan, provider normalization, delegation, and whether the query is reaching the intended name servers.
A production checklist
- OctoDNS and the target provider plugin are installed in an isolated virtual environment.
- The installed OctoDNS release and plugin versions are recorded; the documented 1.22.0 release line has been checked for compatibility.
- Configuration and zone files are committed to Git; secrets are supplied externally.

- A disposable zone has been used for initial testing whenever possible.
- Production applies require peer review or an explicitly approved automation path.
- Authoritative and recursive

Final guidance
OctoDNS is most valuable when treated as a deployment system rather than a one-off DNS editor. Put complete desired state in reviewable files, use the VPS only as a controlled execution point, preview every change, and verify the result from authoritative servers. Its multi-provider model can improve consistency and portability, but it does not make providers interchangeable: record support, routing, DNSSEC, credentials, quotas, cost, and propagation remain characteristics of the target service. Start small, import existing zones faithfully, and expand automation only after the plan output is predictable.
