What a Cobblemon Realms server actually is
Cobblemon Realms is a modpack that runs on a dedicated Minecraft Java Edition server. It is not the same thing as a subscription Minecraft Realms world: you run the modded server yourself or rent a machine where a provider runs it for you. Every player still needs the matching Cobblemon Realms client installation.

The official Cobblemon project distinguishes the modpack from an official universal server. CobbledStudios states, “Cobblemon does NOT have an official server.” That means you must use the Realms Server Pack, your own machine, or a hosting provider rather than looking for a single central server operated by the mod authors.
CurseForge lists 3,820,787 downloads for the Cobblemon Official Modpack [Fabric] page, a CobbledStudios figure recorded in 2026 and accessed October 15, 2026. That number is a download count for a related official project page, not a measure of the capacity or popularity of an individual Realms server.

Required software: match all three parts
Before downloading anything, write down the exact Realms version you intend to run. Version drift is the most common cause of “incompatible mod” errors. For the v6.x guidance, the supported matrix is:

Check the version in both downloaded filenames before extracting. Do not assume that the newest client download will work with an older server archive. A server can start successfully and still reject players if one side has a different pack revision.

There are two practical ways to run the server. Self-hosting gives you complete control and avoids a recurring provider bill, but your computer, network and backups become your responsibility. Managed hosting puts the process in a control panel and usually supplies a public address, but it adds a monthly charge and the provider’s limits.

The official wiki says, “Cobblemon Realms partners with BisectHosting, so you can host a server without configuring port forwarding or NeoForge manually.” Its hosting information describes one-click installation, worldwide data centers, DDoS protection, simplified backups, update management and file access. Treat any first-month discount as a current promotion: verify the code, eligibility and renewal terms at checkout rather than assuming the offer is permanent.

Hardware and network requirements
Memory
The official multiplayer guidance calls 8 GB a minimum recommendation for a Realms server. Allocate about 8 GB to the Java process as a starting point, but do not assign all physical memory to Minecraft. Leave room for the operating system, file cache and other services. More players, larger explored areas, automation and additional server-side content can require more memory; watch the process while the busiest number of players is online and increase the allocation only when usage and lag justify it.
Storage
Use SSD storage. World generation, chunk loading, backups and mod file access produce many small reads and writes that are noticeably slower on a mechanical disk. The documentation recommends an SSD but does not specify a brand, interface or capacity. A practical shopping description is “1TB NVMe SSD” for a self-hosted machine, provided your motherboard supports the drive’s interface and you have enough free space for the live world, logs and several complete backups. Capacity needs depend on how much terrain players explore and how many backup generations you retain.
Processor and operating system
The supplied requirements do not establish a universal CPU model or operating-system minimum. Favor a modern processor with strong single-thread performance, because the main server tick cannot distribute every task evenly across cores. Keep the operating system updated, disable sleep on a machine intended to host continuously and avoid running heavy desktop applications beside the server.
Internet connection
A stable connection matters more than a headline download speed. Upload capacity, latency and router reliability determine whether remote players can stay connected. A home server also needs a reachable public address; carrier-grade NAT or an ISP policy that blocks inbound connections can prevent port forwarding from working even when your local settings are correct.

Install a new Cobblemon Realms server
Perform the first installation in an empty directory. Do not place it inside an existing vanilla world folder or an old modpack installation.
- Download both matching packages. Players need the Cobblemon Realms client pack. The server needs the official Server Pack for the exact same release. Confirm Minecraft 1.21.1, NeoForge and the version number before proceeding.
- Create a clean server directory. Use a short path such as
C:MinecraftCobblemonRealmson Windows or/srv/cobblemon-realmson Linux. Ensure the account that will run the server can read and write the directory. - Extract the entire Server Pack. Copy every supplied file and folder into the empty directory. Do not install the client pack on the dedicated server, and do not copy only
mods/. Libraries, configuration files, scripts and loader files are part of the pack’s expected layout. - Verify Java. Open a terminal or command prompt in the server directory and run
java -version. The result must identify Java 21. If the command reports another major version, install or select Java 21 before starting the pack. - Run the supplied launcher. On Windows, run
run.bat. On Linux or another Unix-like system, runrun.sh; if necessary, make it executable withchmod +x run.shfirst. Use the supplied script rather than inventing a different JVM command, because it contains the pack’s expected arguments. - Accept the EULA only if you agree. The first launch may create
eula.txtand stop. Read the Minecraft EULA, then changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you accept its terms. Save the file and run the same startup script again. - Wait for a completed startup. Watch the console and open
logs/latest.log. Do not invite players until the log shows that the server has finished loading and is listening for connections. The first launch can take longer while files and world data are created.
If the script closes immediately, launch it from an already-open terminal so the error remains visible. A missing Java installation, an incorrect Java major version, an incomplete extraction or a damaged download are more useful leads than repeatedly double-clicking the file.

Configure the server before inviting players
Core settings in server.properties
Stop the server before editing configuration. Open server.properties with a plain-text editor and set the values that match your community:
motd: the message displayed in the multiplayer list.max-players: the connection limit. Set it to a number your hardware can actually support rather than the largest possible value.server-port: the listening port. The default is25565.online-mode=true: keep this enabled for normal Mojang/Microsoft authentication. Disabling it permits unauthenticated names and creates serious identity and security risks.allow-flight=true: use this when legitimate mod behavior triggers the “Flying is not enabled on this server” kick. Save the change and restart; do not treat it as a substitute for investigating suspicious movement.
Leave settings you do not understand at their pack defaults until you have a backup and a specific reason to change them. A typo in a properties file can stop startup or produce confusing gameplay behavior.

Firewall and router forwarding
For a home server, allow the Java server process through the host firewall and create a router port-forward rule for TCP port 25565 to the host computer’s local IP address. Give the host a DHCP reservation or static local address so the rule does not break after a reboot. Players outside your home network connect using your public address and the forwarded port; players on the same LAN can usually use the host’s local address.

Every player must install the exact same Cobblemon Realms version, Minecraft 1.21.1-compatible client files and a Java 21-compatible launcher environment. A player who downloads a newer pack because it is available in the launcher can be rejected even when the difference looks minor.
Give players the address and port only after the server is ready. If you use the default port, an address such as example-address:25565 is explicit; the port can be omitted when the client is connecting to the standard port. A hosted panel may assign a non-default port, so players must use the provider’s complete address.

Document any server-specific rules, extra server-side mods or custom features before opening the server. A server can require additional files or impose gameplay rules that are not present in the base client download.

Update the pack without losing the world
Never update by overwriting a live installation while the process is running. The safe method is a fresh installation plus a deliberate restore.
- Announce downtime and stop the server. Use the console’s stop command and wait until the process exits cleanly. A forced power-off can leave region or player data incomplete.
- Make a complete backup. Copy the entire old server folder to separate storage. Include the world, other dimensions, player data, logs, configuration and administration files. Keep at least one backup that is not on the same disk as the live server.
- Download the new matching Server Pack. Confirm that the new client pack and server archive carry the same version. Create another empty directory rather than modifying the old one.
- Extract the new pack in full. Preserve the new pack’s mods, libraries, loader files,
kubejs/anddefaultconfigs/as delivered. Do not copy old JARs or runtime files into it. - Restore only reviewed persistent data. Bring over the world directory and its dimensions, then review and restore
server.properties, operator, whitelist and ban files, and the server icon as needed. Compareworld/serverconfig/andworld/datapacks/with the new installation instead of deleting or replacing them blindly. - Do not carry forward obsolete generated content. Never copy the old
mods/directory, libraries, runtime JARs, or the oldkubejs/anddefaultconfigs/folders into the new installation unless the pack’s current documentation explicitly requires a particular file. Those directories can contain version-specific scripts and defaults. - Start and inspect the log. Run the new
run.batorrun.sh, accept any new EULA prompt only if applicable and inspectlogs/latest.log. Join with an administrator account first, check a few familiar areas and verify that player inventories and permissions survived. - Keep the old folder until verification is complete. Do not delete the backup or old installation just because the new server reaches the title screen. Keep it until players have confirmed that important builds, inventories and dimensions are intact.
This approach also gives you a rollback: stop the new server, preserve its folder for diagnosis, and restore the previous folder if the new release has a blocking issue.
Troubleshoot the failures you are most likely to see
The client will not start
- Confirm the launcher is using Java 21 where it permits a custom Java path.
- Check that the complete client pack finished downloading and that its version is the one the server runs.
- Lower other applications’ memory use and ensure the computer has enough free RAM for the launcher and game in addition to the server.
The server stops during startup
- Verify that you extracted the official Server Pack rather than the client pack.
- Run
java -versionfrom the same account and terminal that launches the server. - Use the supplied startup script and read the first meaningful error in
logs/latest.log. - Remove incomplete leftovers only by returning to a clean extraction; do not randomly delete mods from a supplied pack.
Incompatible-mod or missing-mod errors
Compare the exact version strings on the client and Server Pack. A common cause is an old JAR left in a reused mods/ directory. Rebuild the server in a new folder from the complete current archive instead of trying to repair a mixed installation.
Connection refused or timed out
- Check that the console shows a completed startup and that the server is still running.
- Confirm the player is using the correct public address and port.
- Check the host firewall, router forwarding rule, local IP reservation and the router’s WAN address.
- Test from outside the home network; a LAN test can succeed even when inbound Internet traffic is blocked.
“Flying is not enabled on this server”
Open server.properties, set allow-flight=true, save the file and restart. If the message continues, check for a mismatched client, a mod interaction or a genuine movement problem rather than repeatedly changing unrelated settings.
Operating checklist for a reliable server
- Pin the Realms, Minecraft, NeoForge and Java versions in your server notes.
- Keep the live server on SSD storage with free room for world growth and backups.
- Back up before every update and after major building sessions or configuration changes.
- Store at least one backup away from the live disk and periodically test restoring it.
- Keep
online-mode=true, restrict firewall exposure and avoid publishing administration credentials. - Monitor memory use, tick lag and disk space during peak play rather than sizing only for an empty world.
- Tell players exactly which client version and address to use, including a non-default port when a host assigns one.
For a small private group, a well-maintained home machine can be sufficient and gives you maximum control. For a public community, a managed service can remove port-forwarding work and provide operational features, but you still need version discipline, backups and a plan for configuration changes.
