For most new Minecraft servers in 2026, choose Cobblemon. It supports Fabric as well as NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1 and is generally described as the lighter option for server hardware. Choose Pixelmon instead when its larger advertised roster and built-in gyms, NPCs, and quests are more important than a lower resource footprint—and only after confirming the current NeoForge file and its distribution terms.
Quick verdict
| Question | Better fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Starting a new server with the broadest loader choice | Cobblemon | Builds are listed for both Fabric and NeoForge on Minecraft 1.21.1. |
| Keeping resource use lower | Cobblemon | Comparisons generally describe it as lighter on RAM than Pixelmon. |
| Wanting gyms, NPCs, and quests without assembling add-ons | Pixelmon | Those RPG systems are built in. |
| Maximizing the advertised species roster | Pixelmon | Descriptions place it at more than 900 species and, in some listings, over 1,000. |
| Open-source project transparency | Cobblemon | Its NeoForge modpack listing identifies the Mozilla Public License 2.0, while Pixelmon licensing information is inconsistent. |
| Lowest legal uncertainty when redistributing a modpack | Neither without checking current terms | Cobblemon’s modpack license and the mod’s own license are not established as exactly the same; Pixelmon’s listings include restrictive language. |
The practical choice is therefore not a simple species-count contest. Lock the Minecraft version and loader first, then weigh hardware, built-in progression, and what you are allowed to distribute to players.

What Cobblemon and Pixelmon have in common
Both are free Minecraft mods that turn a survival world into a Pokémon-style adventure. Players catch and train creatures, build teams, explore, and interact with a world that still uses Minecraft as its foundation. Neither purchase price determines the hosting decision: the significant costs are server capacity, administration time, and any paid hosting plan you choose.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe projects differ in emphasis. Cobblemon is commonly positioned as a closer-to-vanilla survival experience that can be extended with add-ons. Pixelmon is positioned as a more complete Pokémon RPG, with more systems delivered in the core mod. Those descriptions are useful design signals, not a guarantee that every server or every add-on will behave identically.

Loader and Minecraft 1.21.1 compatibility
Compatibility is the first gate because a mod, loader, client, and server must agree. A larger roster is irrelevant if players cannot join the world.
| Mod | Minecraft target in the current evidence | Loader information | What to verify before installation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cobblemon | 1.21.1 | CurseForge lists Fabric and NeoForge builds dated October 2026. Some listings also mention Forge. | Open the exact file page and confirm the loader badge; do not assume a file marked Forge is interchangeable with NeoForge or Fabric. |
| Pixelmon | 1.21.1 | The current branch is NeoForge-focused. One listing identifies 9.3.16 as a May 2026 release; a later summary lists 9.4.1 for NeoForge 1.21.1, dated September 2026. | Resolve the 9.3.x versus 9.4.1 discrepancy in the live file list and use the same release on the server and every client. |
Pixelmon’s loader history is also described inconsistently. Some material refers to older Forge support, while other 1.21.1 information lists NeoForge only. Treat legacy Forge references as relevant to older worlds, not as proof that a current 1.21.1 package will run on Forge.
Why the loader decision matters
- Fabric gives Cobblemon servers another ecosystem. If your community already uses Fabric mods, Cobblemon can fit that setup.
- NeoForge is the common denominator for the current Pixelmon branch. A Pixelmon plan should start with a NeoForge-capable host and a matching client profile.
- Do not mix loaders. Installing a Fabric mod in a NeoForge server, or selecting a Forge file because its name resembles the NeoForge file, will normally stop the server during startup or prevent clients from connecting.
Performance: which mod is easier to host?
Available comparisons generally describe Cobblemon as lighter on RAM and Pixelmon as heavier, particularly in large worlds. Pixelmon’s detailed models and broader collection of systems are cited as reasons for the extra load. This is a directional comparison, not a published benchmark: no fixed RAM number, tick-rate result, or player-capacity test establishes a universal advantage.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →How to apply the performance difference
- Small private survival server: Cobblemon is the safer starting point when you want vanilla-style play and have limited headroom.
- Large exploration world: Expect Pixelmon to require more careful monitoring as more terrain, entities, and RPG systems are active.
- Existing modpack: Count the entire pack, not just the Pokémon mod. Other mods, view distance, simulation distance, world size, and concurrent players can dominate the result.
- Unknown host support: Ask the provider whether it supports the selected loader and Minecraft 1.21.1. No provider-specific compatibility data establishes that every host supports either project.
What to watch after launch
Check the server console and performance panel during exploration, battles, and busy periods. A rising tick-time indicator, repeated out-of-memory shutdowns, or long pauses during world travel means the configuration needs attention. Reduce optional simulation and view settings, remove unnecessary add-ons, or move to a plan with more headroom only after confirming that the mod and loader versions are correct. Do not treat a larger memory allocation as a cure for a mismatched file or a broken add-on.

Roster size and built-in Pokémon features
Species figures are difficult to compare because sources count different things: fully implemented creatures, data entries, and totals that change with each release are not equivalent.
| Mod | Reported scope | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Cobblemon | About 700–900 species in one comparison; another report says roughly 900 around its 1.8 update; a version 1.7.3 report counts 851 fully implemented Pokémon from all nine generations and data for 1,025 species. | Use the exact release’s in-game Pokédex or file notes for a definitive count. The 851 figure is tied to v1.7.3, whose source dates are inconsistent. |
| Pixelmon | Descriptions commonly say 900+ to 1,000+ species across all generations. | Confirm the count for the specific 1.21.1 release; the advertised range is not a guarantee that every species has identical mechanics. |
Cobblemon’s official wiki is described as containing most data for all 1,017 Pokémon, but that page is about 660 days old relative to October 2026 and likely predates the current count. It should not be used as a current roster total without checking the live project files.
Pixelmon’s built-in RPG layer
Pixelmon is the stronger fit if your server concept depends on gyms, NPCs, and quests being present when the mod is installed. These systems reduce the amount of assembly required for a structured Pokémon RPG. You still need to verify how a particular release configures them and whether your chosen add-ons are compatible.

Cobblemon’s modular approach
Cobblemon is generally framed as a vanilla-style survival foundation. Gyms, NPCs, quests, or other progression layers commonly come from add-ons rather than the core experience. That creates extra setup and compatibility work, but it also lets an administrator keep a simpler world or choose only the systems the community wants.

Licensing, redistribution, and server rules
License information deserves its own check because hosting a server and redistributing a ready-made modpack are different activities.
Cobblemon
The Cobblemon NeoForge modpack page identifies the Mozilla Public License 2.0. The license for the Cobblemon mod itself was not separately confirmed in the available material, so do not assume that the modpack page answers every redistribution question. Read the license attached to the exact mod file and follow any project rules before bundling it with a launcher pack.
Pixelmon
Pixelmon’s licensing status is conflicting. A CurseForge listing is reported to show “All Rights Reserved” and distribution terms that restrict redistribution, including modpacks. Other community material describes Pixelmon as free and open source, but that conflicts with the listing and should not override the current project terms. An older report that development had ended and downloads were pulled is contradicted by 2026 file updates, so it is not a reliable current status signal.
Safe distribution practice
- Record the exact Minecraft version, loader, mod version, and download page used by the server.
- Read the current license and distribution rules attached to that release.
- Give players installation instructions that point them to the authorized download location instead of re-uploading files.
- If you publish a complete modpack, check whether redistribution is allowed and whether attribution or additional notices are required.
- Keep a copy of the terms you relied on, because mod pages and permissions can change.
Cost and hosting requirements
Both mods are free to download. A free mod does not make the server free: you still pay, if necessary, for CPU time, memory, storage, backups, and bandwidth, or provide your own machine and connection.

- Fight your way through an all-new action-adventure game, inspired by classic dungeon crawlers and set in the Minecraft universe!
- Play with up to four friends or brave the dungeons alone. Battle new-and-nasty mobs across action-packed, wildly varied levels, in a quest to defeat the evil Arch-Illager!
No source establishes a universal player limit or minimum memory allocation for either mod. Avoid promises such as “this plan supports X players” unless your host publishes that figure for the exact loader and mod version. Start with the provider’s current 1.21.1 documentation, ask whether Fabric or NeoForge is supported, and leave room for the rest of your modpack and the world you intend to explore.
How to choose: a decision framework
Choose Cobblemon when these statements describe your project
- You want the default recommendation for a new server and prefer a lighter starting point.
- Your community may use Fabric, or you want the option of Fabric and NeoForge.
- Vanilla-style survival matters more than a prebuilt gym-and-quest campaign.
- You are comfortable selecting and maintaining add-ons for extra RPG systems.
- You value the clearer open-source signal associated with the MPL 2.0 listing, while still checking the mod’s own license.
Choose Pixelmon when these statements describe your project
- Your design depends on built-in gyms, NPCs, and quests.
- The largest advertised roster is a priority, and you accept that exact counts vary by release.
- Your server is already organized around NeoForge.
- You have enough performance headroom to monitor a heavier mod on large worlds.
- You have checked the current license and will not redistribute files in a way the project’s terms prohibit.
Use a pilot world when the answer is mixed
Install the candidate release on a separate test world, invite a representative group of players, and exercise the activities that matter to your design: travel, catching, battles, gyms, quests, and any planned add-ons. Compare console errors and performance observations under the same world and settings. A pilot cannot settle a license dispute, but it can expose loader mismatches and resource problems before they affect a public world.
Installation checklist for a 1.21.1 server
- Freeze the target. Write down Minecraft 1.21.1, the loader, and the exact mod release. For Pixelmon, resolve whether the current file is 9.3.16 or 9.4.1 before proceeding.
- Confirm host capability. Ask the host whether its server software supports the selected Fabric or NeoForge build and whether it permits custom mod files.
- Install the matching server loader. Use the loader build required by the mod file, not merely the newest loader offered in a control panel.
- Add the mod to the server. Upload the authorized file to the host’s mods location or use its official installer. Keep only one Pokémon mod release in that folder.
- Build the client profile. Every player needs the same Minecraft version, loader, Pokémon mod version, and required dependencies. A client on Fabric cannot join a NeoForge server profile.
- Start a test world. Read the complete startup log. Stop at the first missing dependency, wrong-loader message, or version conflict instead of repeatedly restarting.
- Configure gameplay. Apply server rules, world settings, spawn behavior, and any add-ons only after the base mod loads successfully.
- Test backups and updates. Take a world backup before changing the loader, mod release, or add-on set. Test updates on a copy before applying them to the public world.
Troubleshooting branches
The server stops during startup
Check the loader badge and Minecraft version on every file first. A Fabric/NeoForge mix, a legacy Forge file, or a Pixelmon release intended for a different 1.21.1 branch is more likely than a hardware problem. Remove recently added add-ons, restart with only the loader and Pokémon mod, and add components back one at a time.
Players receive a mismatch or cannot join
Compare the client and server mod filenames and versions, not just the mod’s name. Confirm that the client uses the same loader and that required dependencies are installed. If the server is NeoForge, rebuild the client profile as NeoForge rather than trying to force a Fabric profile to connect.

The world lags after adding content
Determine whether the slowdown appears during exploration, battles, or a specific add-on. Pixelmon is generally the heavier starting point, especially in large worlds, but either project can be affected by the rest of the pack and by world settings. Roll back the last change on a test copy, then measure again before buying more capacity.
You cannot publish a modpack
Stop distribution until the exact release’s terms are clear. Pixelmon’s reported “All Rights Reserved” listing and redistribution restrictions require particular caution. For Cobblemon, verify the mod’s own license rather than relying solely on the license shown for a modpack page.
Recommended hosting plan for common server types
| Server concept | Recommended starting choice | Reasoning | Watch-out |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small friends-only survival world | Cobblemon on Fabric or NeoForge | Lighter reputation and flexible loader options suit a simple setup. | Add-ons can change the resource profile and compatibility picture. |
| Community survival server with optional progression | Cobblemon on the loader your existing pack uses | You can add only the RPG systems your players request. | Maintain a tested add-on list and clear client instructions. |
| Gym-and-quest campaign | Pixelmon on NeoForge | Gyms, NPCs, and quests are part of the advertised core experience. | Plan for heavier resource use and verify the current release and license. |
| Large collection-focused server | Pixelmon if the current roster meets your goals | Its published descriptions claim 900+ to 1,000+ species. | Species totals vary by version, and larger worlds need closer performance monitoring. |
Final recommendation
Host Cobblemon unless you have a specific reason to choose Pixelmon. Cobblemon’s Fabric and NeoForge availability on 1.21.1, lighter server reputation, and modular approach make it the safer default for a new 2026 server. Select Pixelmon when its built-in RPG systems and larger advertised roster are central to the community’s plan, your infrastructure is ready for NeoForge, and you have verified the exact current file and redistribution terms. In either case, test the precise release on a private world before inviting players.
