SkyFactory 5 Server Not Working: Common Fixes for Startup, Joining, and Loading Errors

A stage-by-stage guide to fixing SkyFactory 5 server failures, including the 5.0.8/Minecraft 1.20.1 baseline, Java 17 checks, the official server ZIP, join-crash diagnosis and the documented allow-flight setting.

Most SkyFactory 5 server failures come down to one of four mismatches: the wrong pack or Minecraft version, Java not running at the required version, an incomplete or incorrect server installation, or a client crash that needs log-based diagnosis. Start by identifying the exact failure stage, then verify the current pack baseline—SkyFactory 5 release 5.0.8, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and Java 17—before changing memory or random configuration settings.

The official project publishes a separate dedicated-server archive. Use SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip for the server and install the matching 5.0.8 client pack. If players are kicked while falling, the project’s server notes document allow-flight=true as the relevant setting. A server that reaches its ready state but crashes during “Loading terrain” requires the server console and client logs; there is no evidence of one universal fix for that symptom.

First, identify where the failure occurs

“The server is not working” describes several different problems. Treating them as one problem leads to wasted reinstalls and unnecessary RAM changes. Watch the server console and classify the failure before you edit anything.

Failure stage What you see First checks
Download or installation The archive will not extract, files are missing, or the launcher cannot create the instance. Use the official server archive, confirm that the download is complete, and repair the client installation through CurseForge when the client instance itself is damaged.
Process startup The server closes immediately, never reaches its ready state, or prints a Java/Forge error. Check that the process is using Java 17, then inspect the first meaningful error in the server log.
Server reaches ready state The console appears normal, but nobody can connect. Separate network or firewall problems from pack mismatches. Confirm that the client is the matching release and that the server process is actually listening on the intended host and port.
Connection succeeds, then fails A player is kicked, sees “Loading terrain” indefinitely, or the client crashes during joining. Compare client and server versions, collect both logs, and read the server console at the exact time of the kick or crash.

Save the first relevant error rather than the final shutdown message. A Java exception, a missing mod, or a rejected connection earlier in the log is usually more useful than a generic “server stopped” line.

Use a known-compatible SkyFactory 5 baseline

The current listing reviewed for this guide identifies SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.8 as the latest release, published March 11, 2025, for Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge. It requires Java 17. The project page recommends at least 6 GB of RAM for the client; that recommendation is not a measured minimum for a dedicated server.

Component Baseline What to do
SkyFactory 5 5.0.8 Use the same release on the dedicated server and every client.
Minecraft 1.20.1 Do not combine a different Minecraft version with the 5.0.8 pack.
Mod loader Forge Launch the pack through its Forge-based configuration rather than a generic server setup.
Java 17 Verify the Java executable used by the server and launcher, not just the version installed somewhere on the computer.
Client memory guidance At least 6 GB recommended by the project page Use this as client allocation guidance, not as proof that adding RAM will fix every server failure.

Version matching means more than matching the name “SkyFactory 5.” A 5.0.7 client joining a 5.0.8 server can have different mod files, scripts, or configuration. When troubleshooting, put every player on the exact server release first; change one variable at a time after that.

Install the dedicated server archive, not the client pack

The project publishes separate client and server ZIP files. A client instance contains files intended for the launcher and player; it is not automatically a complete dedicated-server installation. The archive for the reviewed baseline is named SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip.

Perform a clean server installation

  1. Create a new, empty directory for the server. Keeping it separate from a client instance prevents launcher metadata and client-only files from being mistaken for server files.
  2. Extract SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip into that directory. If extraction reports a corrupt archive or missing files, download the server ZIP again before troubleshooting Forge.
  3. Start the server using the startup files included with that server release. Do not substitute a generic Forge server directory and assume it contains SkyFactory’s scripts and configuration.
  4. Let the process run long enough to determine whether it reaches its ready state. Record the first error if it exits; do not rely only on the last line printed when the window closes.
  5. Have every player install the matching 5.0.8 client release for Minecraft 1.20.1 and Forge. A client that can launch by itself can still be incompatible with the server.

If the old installation is suspected to be incomplete, rename it as a backup and test the extracted server archive in a new directory. This distinguishes a damaged installation from a problem in the world or custom configuration. Move custom settings back only after the clean server reaches the same stage successfully.

Verify that the server is actually using Java 17

SkyFactory 5’s official requirement is Java 17. Having Java 17 installed is not enough if the startup script, hosting panel, or launcher points to another executable. Multiple Java installations commonly leave an older version first on the system path.

Check the executable selected by the server

  1. Open a terminal or command prompt in the environment that starts the server.
  2. Run java -version and confirm that the reported major version is 17.
  3. If a panel or script specifies a full path to Java, check that path separately. A terminal can report Java 17 while the server panel still launches a different binary.
  4. Restart the server after correcting the selected executable, then save the startup output showing the Java version for comparison with future failures.

For a client-side installation or launch failure, apply the launcher’s Java troubleshooting and repair guidance as well. Keep server-side and client-side Java checks separate: a client may open successfully while the dedicated server is still using the wrong runtime.

Do not treat memory as a substitute for the correct runtime

Increasing the heap cannot correct an incompatible Java version, a missing mod, or a broken server archive. The project recommends at least 6 GB for clients, but that is not a universal server setting. Set memory only after Java 17 and the correct pack files are confirmed, and use the server log to distinguish an out-of-memory failure from other exceptions.

When the server starts but players are kicked while falling

SkyFactory 5 server release notes for version 5.0.3, dated January 7, 2025, explicitly state: “Set allow-flight=true in the server.properties to not get kicked for flying when falling.”

  • The classic UNO card game builds fun on game night with a Minecraft theme.
  • UNO Minecraft features a deck and storage tin decorated with graphics from the popular video game.
  • Players match colors and numbers to the card on top of the discard pile as in the classic game.
  • The Creeper card unique to this deck forces other players to draw 3 cards.
  • Makes a great gift for kid, teen, adult and family game nights with 2 to 10 players ages 7 years and older, especially Minecraft and video game fans.

Apply that setting only when the symptom matches a flying or falling kick. Open the server.properties belonging to the installed server, set:

allow-flight=true

Save the file and restart the server. The note is attached to the 5.0.3 server release, so inspect the configuration shipped with your installed release rather than assuming every later pack uses identical defaults. This setting is not a general remedy for a client crash, a version mismatch, or a server that never starts.

Fix “Loading terrain” hangs and join-time crashes with logs

A server that reaches its ready state but fails when a player joins is a different case from a startup failure. The available issue evidence does not establish one universal cause for join crashes. Diagnose the event that occurs at the moment of connection.

Confirm both sides before changing anything else

  • Verify that the server and client use the same SkyFactory release, Minecraft 1.20.1, and Forge-based pack.
  • Make sure the client was installed from the client release and the server from the dedicated-server release. Copying individual mods between installations can create a set that looks similar but is not identical.
  • Ask whether every player fails or only one computer. A single affected client points toward its local instance, Java selection, or graphics environment; universal failure points more strongly toward the server, pack, or connection.
  • Record whether the player is kicked immediately, remains on “Loading terrain,” or reaches the world and then crashes. Those are separate events even when the visible screen is similar.

Collect the two logs that matter

  1. Keep the server console visible while a player attempts to join.
  2. Copy the server lines printed immediately before and after the connection attempt, including any stack trace, disconnect reason, or missing-mod message.
  3. On the client, save the latest log or crash report generated by that attempt. Include the Java version reported by the launcher and the exact pack release.
  4. Compare timestamps. A client crash with no corresponding server error is different from a server exception that disconnects the player.
  5. Remove passwords, IP addresses, and other private information before sharing logs publicly, but do not remove the exception type, mod name, or “caused by” lines.

Do not replace the world or reinstall everything before saving these files. A clean reinstall can erase the evidence needed to identify the actual mod or configuration that failed.

Why the 8 GB example does not prove a RAM fix

One reported SkyFactory 5 version 5.0.7 join crash involved Java 17.0.14 and 8 GB allocated. That report did not include logs or a confirmed resolution. It therefore cannot show whether memory, a version mismatch, configuration, networking, or another cause was responsible. Use the report as a reminder to collect evidence, not as a reason to prescribe a larger heap to every server.

Repair CurseForge installations when the launcher is the failing component

If the problem occurs while installing or launching the client pack rather than while the dedicated server is running, use CurseForge’s repair-installation option and its Forge-specific troubleshooting guidance. These are broad launcher checks, not a confirmed fix for every server-side failure.

Use repair before rebuilding the instance

  1. Open the SkyFactory 5 profile in CurseForge and use the available repair or repair-installation action.
  2. Allow the launcher to restore missing or damaged files, then launch the repaired profile once.
  3. Confirm that the repaired profile still reports the intended SkyFactory release, Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and Java 17.
  4. If the launcher still fails, capture its error and compare it with the dedicated server’s logs. Do not assume a client launcher error explains a server process that never used CurseForge.

For a dedicated server, repair the server installation by extracting the official server ZIP into a clean directory. A launcher repair cannot restore files that were never part of the server archive.

Separate connection problems from pack problems

When the server console is healthy but a remote player cannot connect, first establish whether the failure is local or network-wide.

  • Test from the same machine or local network, if possible. A local success with a remote failure points toward routing, firewall, or address configuration rather than the modpack files.
  • Check the server console during the attempt. If no connection appears at all, the request may not be reaching the process. If a player appears and is immediately disconnected, continue with version and log checks.
  • Verify that the address and port supplied to players belong to this server instance, especially when more than one Minecraft server is installed.
  • Check the operating system or host firewall for the server process and listening port. Change one rule at a time and retest.
  • Ask every affected player to use the same client release before comparing results. Network testing with mismatched packs produces misleading symptoms.

Keep a short timeline: server started, first local connection, first remote attempt, console message, client result. This prevents a networking change from being confused with a pack or Java change.

Decide whether self-hosting or managed hosting fits the problem

Self-hosting gives you direct access to the server files, logs, Java executable, and backups, but you are responsible for maintaining the correct Minecraft, Forge, and SkyFactory versions. A managed Minecraft host can remove some operating-system and network work, but it is useful only if the service supports the current modpack and gives you the controls needed to diagnose it.

Before moving a world, ask these questions:

  • Does the service explicitly support Minecraft 1.20.1, Forge, and the SkyFactory 5 release you intend to run?
  • How much memory and CPU are assigned, and can you inspect the Java and Forge startup logs?
  • Can you upload the official server ZIP, edit server.properties, and restore a backup?
  • Where are the machines located relative to the players, and will geographic latency affect connections?
  • What is the total recurring cost compared with maintaining your own machine?

Hosting is an alternative for readers who do not want to maintain a server, not a guaranteed cure for a mismatched client or broken pack. Preserve the logs and verify version support before migrating.

A recovery sequence that avoids guesswork

Use this order when you need a repeatable reset rather than isolated experiments:

  1. Classify the stage. Decide whether the failure is installation, startup, ready-but-unreachable, kicked during play, or client crash during joining.
  2. Freeze the versions. Put the server and all clients on SkyFactory 5.0.8, Minecraft 1.20.1, and the Forge-based configuration identified by the current project listing.
  3. Verify Java. Run java -version in the actual server environment and confirm Java 17. Check the launcher separately for client failures.
  4. Replace only the installation. Extract SkyFactory_5_Server_5.0.8.zip into a clean directory instead of mixing client files with server files.
  5. Start and capture output. Save the first meaningful error and determine whether the process reaches its ready state.
  6. Apply symptom-specific configuration. If players are kicked for flying while falling, set allow-flight=true in the server’s server.properties and restart.
  7. Test one client. Use one matching client and record the exact result. Then test a second client to distinguish a local client problem from a server-wide problem.
  8. Compare logs. Save the server console and client log for the same attempt before changing memory, worlds, or mods.
  9. Repair the launcher if needed. Use CurseForge’s repair and Forge troubleshooting guidance for client installation or launch failures.
  10. Escalate with evidence. When asking for help, provide the release, Minecraft and Java versions, failure stage, exact symptom, and relevant log excerpt. A description such as “it crashes” is not enough to identify the branch of the problem.

What a successful fix should look like

A corrected setup has a server process that reaches its ready state without an early Java or Forge exception, clients installed from the matching SkyFactory release, and a join attempt that produces a normal connection in the server console. If the only remaining symptom is a flying or falling kick, the documented allow-flight=true change addresses that specific rule. If the client still crashes during “Loading terrain,” stop changing settings at random and use the paired server and client logs to identify the failing component.
