The game may be exiting during startup, hanging before a window appears, blocked by security software or another application, or affected by incomplete files or stale Battle.net data.
Check service status first, then work through the fixes below. They target the launcher, installation, drivers, shaders, and application conflicts without immediately reinstalling the entire game.

First, check whether Warzone or Battle.net is down
Open Activision’s Online Services page, select Call of Duty: Warzone, and check both Warzone and Battle.net status. If an incident is listed, wait for it to be resolved instead of repeatedly repairing or reinstalling the game.
An “online” status only means that no broad outage is currently reported. It does not rule out a corrupted local installation, a Battle.net cache problem, a regional connection issue, or a Windows, driver, account, or security conflict.

Identify which launch failure you have
| What you see | What it can indicate | Best next step |
|---|---|---|
| Battle.net says Playing Now, but no Warzone process appears | A stale launcher or Agent state, blocked executable, damaged update metadata, or security interference | End Battle.net and Agent processes, restart Windows, then run Scan and Repair |
| A process remains, but there is no usable window | An invisible, minimized, black, or frozen window; overlay interference; or graphics initialization trouble | Check Task Manager and displays, then test without overlays and monitoring software |
| The process starts and closes, returning the button to Play | Corrupted files, permissions or security blocking, driver problems, or a background conflict | Repair the installation, update Windows and the GPU driver, then use a clean boot |
Task Manager may show names such as cod.exe, ModernWarfare.exe, bootstrapper.exe, Battle.net, or the Blizzard Update Agent. A visible process does not prove that the game has started correctly; historical player reports describe Warzone remaining in Task Manager without producing a usable window.
Fix Warzone stuck at “Playing Now”
1. Fully close Battle.net and stuck processes
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- End any visible Warzone or Call of Duty process.
- End Battle.net and the Blizzard Update Agent, or similarly named Agent process, if present.
- Restart Windows.
- Open Battle.net again and allow any pending launcher or Warzone update to finish before selecting Play.
This clears a launcher state that can remain stuck after a failed attempt. Activision’s cache and Battle.net file guidance also requires Blizzard processes to be closed before cache files are removed.

One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware match2. Run Battle.net’s Scan and Repair
- Open Battle.net and select Call of Duty: Warzone.
- Open the options menu beside the Play button, usually represented by a gear or menu button.
- Select Scan and Repair, then start the scan.
- Wait for Battle.net to finish repairing or downloading files before launching again.
The exact menu placement can vary with Battle.net client versions, but Scan and Repair remains the relevant control. Activision recommends it for Battle.net installations in its Warzone PC troubleshooting guide.
If the scan reports an error, record the exact code and whether the same files are repaired repeatedly. For example, BLZBNTAGT00000BB8 appears in older Warzone forum reports, but it should not be treated as the expected error for a current 2026 installation.

3. Reset Battle.net’s cache or program data
Use this step only after closing Battle.net, Agent, and game processes.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
C:ProgramDataand press Enter. - Delete the Battle.net folder if you are following Activision’s broader “Deleting Battle.net Files” procedure.
- Restart Battle.net and try the game again.
Deleting Battle.net data can make the launcher forget where Warzone is installed. If Battle.net displays Install even though the files remain on the drive, use Locate the game rather than starting a second installation. This reset does not necessarily delete the game itself, but it can remove installation metadata.

4. Update Windows and your graphics driver
Install pending Windows updates, then restart. Get the graphics driver only from your GPU manufacturer’s official source. Restart Windows again after installation.
If Warzone stopped launching immediately after a driver update, test the manufacturer’s supported rollback option. Do not assume that the newest driver is always the solution, and avoid third-party driver-updater packages. Activision’s current guidance is available on its PC troubleshooting page; exact recommended driver versions can change.

5. Let shader preloading finish
If a Warzone window appears and shows shader-preloading activity, leave it open until the process completes. Activision warns that leaving the main menu during shader preloading can contribute to performance problems, and the first launch after a major update may take longer than usual.
This advice applies when the game actually reaches the shader-preloading stage. It does not explain every case where no process or window appears. Avoid repeatedly terminating the game during shader compilation.
6. Temporarily disable overlays and background utilities
Close likely conflicts, launch Warzone, and then restore applications one at a time if the game works. Activision specifically mentions outdated Razer Synapse drivers, NZXT CAM, MSI Afterburner, Razer Cortex, antivirus interference, and other active applications.
Also test without commonly injected overlays or capture tools:
- Discord, NVIDIA, AMD, Xbox Game Bar, or Steam overlays
- OBS and other recording or capture software
- RGB, fan-control, hardware-monitoring, and overclocking utilities
- Remote-work, virtualization, or remote-desktop software
- Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software
These broader categories are diagnostic possibilities, not proof that a particular program is responsible. Historical reports have mentioned products such as Citrix, Comodo, Sophos, and Overwolf in individual cases; those reports are anecdotal and are not universal fixes.

7. Test security software safely
If antivirus or endpoint security appears to be blocking the executable, use its documented exclusion feature to add the complete Warzone game folder temporarily. Then test the launch and remove the exception if it makes no difference.
Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security, download replacement DLLs, or use unofficial “fix” executables.
8. Use a Windows clean boot
If repair and conflict testing do not help, perform a Windows clean boot:
- Disable nonessential third-party services and startup applications using Windows’ system-configuration tools.
- Restart and launch Warzone.
- If it works, re-enable services and startup applications in groups until the conflicting program is identified.
- Restore normal startup settings afterward.
Activision explicitly recommends a clean boot when launch problems persist. It is more useful than endlessly repeating Scan and Repair because it distinguishes damaged installation files from software that interferes with startup.
Is this specifically a Season 3 bug?
Not necessarily. Players reported the Play → Launching → Playing Now → Play loop after the April 2021 Season 3 update, including a report dated April 22, 2021. Those reports establish that the symptom can follow a seasonal update, but they do not prove that every Season 3-related incident had one cause or that Activision confirmed a universal Season 3 launch defect.

After an update, three explanations are plausible:
- Post-update files or metadata: an update may be incomplete or leave inconsistent local data.
- A newly exposed compatibility conflict: a driver, overlay, security tool, or utility that previously worked may interfere with the changed game.
- Coincidental timing: the update may expose an existing Windows, graphics, or Battle.net problem without being the root cause.
Also note the date context. As of August 18, 2026, Activision’s support pages refer to later seasonal content, including Season 05. “After the Season 3 update” may therefore describe a historical incident or a player’s update context, not a current Season 3 outage. Check the current Warzone support index and service status rather than assuming the old seasonal label identifies today’s cause.
When should you reinstall?
Keep a full reinstall as a last resort. Consider it when Scan and Repair repeatedly fails, Battle.net cannot locate an otherwise intact installation, files remain corrupted after repair and a launcher reset, or the issue continues after a clean boot and conflict test. Activision support may also recommend it.
Before deleting anything, check available storage, your connection limits, and the current Battle.net installation screen. The official pages do not establish one universal download size, so do not rely on a fixed number. Do not delete the Warzone folder merely because Battle.net temporarily shows Install; try Locate the game first.
What not to do
- Do not assume Playing Now proves that Warzone completed startup.
- Do not repeatedly run Scan and Repair without recording errors or repaired files.
- Do not permanently disable antivirus or Windows security.
- Do not begin with registry edits, BIOS changes, compatibility-mode experiments, or reinstalling Windows.
- Do not replace game DLLs or download unofficial launch “fixes.”
- Do not delete the entire installation before trying repair, launcher reset, and conflict isolation.
