Nvidia RTX 50-Series Gaming Benchmarks Revisited: How Much Performance Comes From DLSS 4.5?

The RTX 5090 is a major raw upgrade, but RTX 50-series performance below the flagship depends much more on DLSS 4.5, Multi Frame Generation, game support, and price.

The RTX 5090 is the clearest generational upgrade in Nvidia’s RTX 50-series, but the lower-tier cards are a more complicated story. Their native raster gains over comparable RTX 40-series GPUs are generally modest. The biggest performance jumps appear when DLSS Super Resolution, Frame Generation, and Multi Frame Generation are enabled—especially in supported ray-traced games.

That makes the original January 2025 benchmark headline substantially fair as a launch-era warning, but “DLSS 4.0 required” is too absolute for a current article. Nvidia now markets the feature set as DLSS 4.5, and the cards remain perfectly usable without it. The important question is how much of a displayed frame rate comes from the GPU rendering frames traditionally, and how much comes from AI reconstruction and generated frames.

What Nvidia’s original benchmarks actually showed

The launch-era comparisons covered the RTX 5090 against the RTX 4090, the RTX 5080 against the RTX 4080, the RTX 5070 Ti against the RTX 4070 Ti, and the RTX 5070 against the RTX 4070. Notebookcheck reported Nvidia’s selected comparisons on January 15, 2025, later updating its report in February 2026. The charts were demonstrations of Nvidia’s preferred workloads—not a complete independent benchmark suite.

Game What it illustrated Important qualification
Resident Evil 4 Performance with an emphasis on rendering without AI upscaling Useful for isolating hardware gains, but still one game and one test configuration
Horizon Forbidden West DLSS-enabled performance An older DLSS configuration showed a much smaller RTX 5090 advantage than the DLSS 4 results
Black Myth: Wukong Large DLSS 4 gains The result combines multiple technologies, not just faster GPU hardware
Alan Wake 2 and Star Wars: Outlaws Ray tracing and DLSS 4 demonstrations Headline gains depend on the selected DLSS and frame-generation modes

In one no-upscaling Resident Evil 4 comparison, Nvidia’s RTX 5090 was reported as roughly 25% faster than the RTX 4090. In Horizon Forbidden West with an older DLSS configuration, it was reported as performing roughly similarly to the RTX 4090. Nvidia also showed more than 2× performance in selected DLSS 4 scenarios.

Those figures should be read as specific chart results, not universal averages. Nvidia’s current product charts also use different resolutions by model: 4K for the RTX 5090 and 5080, 1440p for the RTX 5070 Ti and 5070, and lower resolutions farther down the range. Some comparisons give RTX 50 cards Multi Frame Generation while RTX 40 cards use ordinary Frame Generation. That shows the feature advantage, but it is not a pure hardware comparison.

Native performance tells a different story

Independent aggregate rasterization results provide a better view of traditional GPU performance. Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 hierarchy reports these average frame rates:

GPU 1080p Ultra 1440p Ultra 4K Ultra
RTX 5090 203.8 fps 167.3 fps 110.8 fps
RTX 4090 183.6 fps 143.4 fps 89.1 fps
RTX 5080 166.9 fps 128.3 fps 77.4 fps
RTX 4080 157.3 fps 117.5 fps 67.5 fps
RTX 5070 Ti 155.4 fps 116.8 fps 68.6 fps
RTX 5070 132.6 fps 96.4 fps 54.3 fps
RTX 4070 Super 126.7 fps 91.2 fps 49.2 fps
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB 105.2 fps 73.4 fps 40.2 fps

Calculated from those published figures, the RTX 5090 is approximately 11% faster than the RTX 4090 at 1080p, 17% faster at 1440p, and 24% faster at 4K. The RTX 5080 leads the RTX 4080 by about 6%, 9%, and 15% at the same resolutions. The RTX 5070 is only about 5% ahead of the RTX 4070 Super at 1080p, 6% at 1440p, and 10% at 4K.

These are aggregate rasterization calculations, not Nvidia’s claims. They show why the RTX 5090 should not be treated as representative of the entire generation. Nvidia’s architecture documentation identifies the flagship as GB202, the RTX 5080 as GB203, and the RTX 5070 as GB205: they are not simply the same GPU scaled down. Nvidia’s Blackwell architecture document provides the relevant chip designations.

What DLSS changes

DLSS is not one setting. Benchmarkers should report each part of the rendering pipeline separately:

  • Native rasterization: The GPU renders the image at the output resolution without DLSS reconstruction.
  • Ray tracing or path tracing: Hardware-intensive lighting effects are rendered without assuming a particular upscaling mode.
  • DLSS Super Resolution: The game renders internally at a lower resolution, then reconstructs the output using AI.
  • Frame Generation: AI inserts additional frames between traditionally rendered frames.
  • Multi Frame Generation: On RTX 50-series cards, multiple generated frames can be inserted for each traditionally rendered frame.

Nvidia says DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation can generate up to three frames for every traditionally rendered frame and claimed up to an 8× performance increase over traditional rendering in supported conditions. That is a feature-stack comparison, not an eightfold increase in raw GPU speed. A displayed counter can therefore rise dramatically even when the number of fully rendered frames has not changed by the same proportion.

Nvidia’s current RTX 50-series page uses the DLSS 4.5 branding. It adds Dynamic Multi Frame Generation and a second-generation transformer model to the launch-era DLSS 4 feature set. The launch thesis remains relevant, but a 2026 article should not present “DLSS 4.0” as the current name.

Why the lower-end cards rely on DLSS more heavily

Frame generation is most tempting when a GPU’s native frame rate is not high enough to satisfy a high-refresh display. But generated frames do not replace the underlying rendered frames. If a game produces an unstable 25–35 real fps, Multi Frame Generation may produce a much higher displayed number without making controls feel proportionally responsive.

Latency is tied heavily to the base rendered frame rate, CPU workload, frame pacing, and the game’s implementation. Nvidia pairs DLSS with Reflex, and says Reflex 2 adds Frame Warp; the current product page labels Frame Warp as “coming soon.” Generated frames can make motion look smoother, but they do not automatically reduce input latency. Reviewers should publish base FPS, final displayed FPS, frame-time behavior, and latency where possible.

Artifacts can also become more visible during fast camera movement or around thin geometry, particle effects, transparencies, UI elements, and rapidly changing objects. DLSS is useful technology, not “free performance”: it changes the rendering pipeline and involves trade-offs in image quality and responsiveness.

Model-by-model assessment

RTX 5090

The RTX 5090 is the strongest hardware upgrade in the launch group and the card that makes the RTX 50-series look most transformative. Its advantage is clearest at 4K, particularly in demanding ray-traced and path-traced games. It should still be judged separately from the rest of the lineup because of its much larger hardware configuration—and its price.

RTX 5080

The RTX 5080 is faster than the RTX 4080, but the native uplift is modest in aggregate testing. Its strongest case is 4K gaming for buyers who value Nvidia’s ray tracing, DLSS 4.5, creator software, CUDA, NVENC, Broadcast, or local AI features. It is difficult to justify at a large premium over its launch MSRP when a buyer mainly wants native raster performance.

RTX 5070 Ti

The RTX 5070 Ti is a capable high-end 1440p and entry-level 4K card. Its value depends heavily on the actual price and on whether the buyer plays DLSS-supported games. Before buying, compare it with AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 and RX 9070 XT, particularly if native raster performance and VRAM matter more than Nvidia’s software ecosystem.

RTX 5070

The RTX 5070 is a modest native upgrade. PCWorld characterized its conventional performance as effectively similar to an RTX 4070 Super, while identifying DLSS 4 as its main differentiator. That makes it more appealing to owners of RTX 20- or 30-series cards than to people who already have a recent RTX 4070-class GPU.

Do not repeat the launch-era “RTX 5070 equals RTX 4090” idea as a general benchmark result. Any such equivalence belongs to selected Nvidia scenarios that combine particular games, settings, resolutions, and DLSS features.

RTX 5060 Ti, RTX 5060, and RTX 5050

These mainstream models extend the same strategy farther down the range. They can deliver attractive displayed frame rates in supported games, but the need to distinguish base FPS from generated FPS is even greater. Check the VRAM capacity carefully, especially if playing new high-texture games at 1440p or higher. An 8GB card may be a poor long-term choice for that use case even when its DLSS result looks impressive.

When Multi Frame Generation is worth using

MFG is most convincing in visually demanding single-player games where the native frame rate is already healthy, the player uses a high-refresh display, and occasional artifacts are less disruptive than lower motion smoothness. It can be especially valuable in 4K ray-traced or path-traced workloads.

It is less compelling for competitive esports. Those games prioritize consistent native rendering, low latency, and clear motion. For VR, ordinary monitor benchmarks are not enough: motion-to-photon latency, frame pacing, application support, and headset-specific behavior require separate testing.

Game support also varies. Native developer integration is not equivalent to a driver-level override. Engine behavior, anti-cheat compatibility, and whether a title supports Super Resolution only or the full frame-generation stack can change the result.

RTX 50-series versus AMD

The practical choice is not simply Nvidia versus AMD. It is a choice among native raster performance, ray tracing, upscaling quality, frame generation, VRAM, software support, and price.

Tom’s Hardware’s 2026 hierarchy identifies AMD’s Radeon RX 9070 as a strong 1440p raster value and the RX 9070 XT as a route to native 4K/60-class gaming at a comparatively low cost. AMD cards deserve serious consideration when the buyer primarily wants traditionally rendered frames and does not need DLSS, CUDA, NVENC, or Nvidia’s creator and AI features.

Nvidia remains the stronger fit for buyers who prioritize ray tracing, path tracing, DLSS 4.5 and Multi Frame Generation support, or the broader CUDA/NVENC/Broadcast ecosystem. The correct comparison should use the same game, resolution, quality setting, upscaling mode, and frame-generation mode.

August 2026 price reality

Launch MSRP is no longer a safe buying guide. Tom’s Hardware’s August 10, 2026 snapshot of median US Newegg prices reported:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Model Launch MSRP August 2026 median
RTX 5050 Not listed in the supplied MSRP set $314.99
RTX 5060 Not listed in the supplied MSRP set $469.99
RTX 5060 Ti 8GB Not listed separately $529.99
RTX 5060 Ti 16GB $429.99 $804.99
RTX 5070 $549.99 $899.99
RTX 5070 Ti $749.99 $1,099.99
RTX 5080 $999.99 $1,499.99
RTX 5090 $1,999.99 $4,699.99

These are US marketplace medians from a specific date, not guaranteed prices or official retail pricing. At roughly $900, the RTX 5070’s value proposition is radically different from its $549.99 MSRP. The same is true of the RTX 5060 Ti 16GB at more than $800. Compare the actual price available to you against AMD alternatives and previous-generation cards before treating DLSS features as justification for a premium.

How to read an RTX 50-series benchmark

  1. Identify the GPU’s native or base rendered frame rate.
  2. Check the output resolution and internal render resolution.
  3. Record whether ray tracing or path tracing is enabled.
  4. Separate DLSS Super Resolution from Frame Generation and Multi Frame Generation.
  5. Look for Reflex, frame-time, latency, and artifact information.
  6. Check the CPU, memory, game version, driver, and graphics preset—especially in 1080p tests, where CPU limits can hide GPU differences.
  7. Compare the card’s real purchase price, not just its launch MSRP.

Verdict

The original claim was directionally right but needs a 2026 qualification. The RTX 5090 delivers the most convincing raw upgrade. The RTX 5080, 5070 Ti, and 5070 offer measurable native gains, but they are generally smaller than Nvidia’s headline DLSS charts suggest. Their largest advantages come from DLSS Super Resolution and AI-generated frames in supported games.

Buy an RTX 50-series card when you specifically value ray tracing, DLSS 4.5, Multi Frame Generation, or Nvidia’s wider software ecosystem—and when the price is competitive. Be cautious if you mainly play competitive games, expect a large uplift with DLSS disabled, already own a recent RTX 40-series card, or are paying a major premium for a generated-FPS number.
