CODE VEIN II Review: A Strong Sequel With Launch-Period Performance Problems

CODE VEIN II improves on the original with flexible builds and a more open world, but launch-period PS5 and PC reviews reported performance issues. Later updates target some problems without proving every complaint is fixed.

CODE VEIN II is a good sequel, but launch-period reviews reported meaningful performance problems on both PS5 and PC. Its open-world shift, flexible Blood Code builds, and character-focused story give it a strong foundation; uneven frame rates, limited enemy variety, repetitive dungeons, and a mid-game difficulty dip hold it back. Bandai Namco has issued several performance-related optimizations since launch, but the available patch notes do not establish that every issue is fixed in the current build.

Is CODE VEIN II a good sequel?

Yes, if what you want is a more exploratory action RPG with room to experiment with builds and a story centered on its characters. CODE VEIN II is a standalone game from Bandai Namco Studios and Bandai Namco Entertainment. You play a Revenant Hunter in a world threatened by the Luna Rapacis and the Horrors, alongside Lou, who can manipulate time. The story moves between past and present versions of the world.

The sequel reworks the series’ Blood Codes and pairs them with blood-based skills, distinct weapons and equipment called Jails, and a partner system. TechRadar reviewer Rhys Wood praised the redesigned Blood Code system for making build experimentation accessible, along with the world, characters, and character creator. The shift to a more open world largely worked for him, too. Read TechRadar’s PS5 review.

What holds it back

The design has rough edges beyond performance. Wood criticized limited enemy and boss variety, repetitive dungeon layouts, and a mid-game stretch where the difficulty dips. Those drawbacks can make a long campaign feel less varied than its open-world structure initially suggests.

For context, Wood said his PS5 playthrough took about 42 hours and came close to 100% completion. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a typical completion-time estimate; Bandai Namco’s estimate for the main story is approximately 30 to 40 hours. Bandai Namco’s FAQ provides the publisher’s estimate.

Does CODE VEIN II run well on PS5?

At launch, TechRadar’s PS5 reviewer found that interior areas could hold the 60 fps target, while larger outdoor environments and some boss encounters had substantial frame-rate drops. Those are launch-period observations from one reviewer’s roughly 42-hour playthrough, not a measurement of every PS5 session or of the October 2026 build. The review’s overall verdict was enthusiastic despite the problem: “Overall, I love Code Vein 2, but there was one major aspect of the game that often prevented me from enjoying it fully.”

Bandai Namco’s March 4, 2026 Ver. 1.0.4/1.0.5 notes say the studio reduced model-processing load for some bosses and field enemies across platforms. For PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, the update also adjusted rendering resolution when “Prioritize Action” is selected to further reduce processing load. These notes document targeted changes, not a guarantee of steady performance in every location. See the Ver. 1.0.4/1.0.5 notes.

Does CODE VEIN II run well on PC?

PC Gamer’s launch-period review described inconsistent performance on a system with an Intel Core i7-13700F, an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 Ti, and 16 GB of RAM. The reviewer saw performance near 60 fps on high settings in a dungeon, followed by frame-rate inconsistency in the wider world. Lowering settings helped but did not eliminate random hiccups; the review also noted brief hangs when entering areas and visible texture loading. The RTX 3060 Ti in that test was below the publisher’s recommended RTX 3080, but above the listed minimum GPU. This is a single-system account, not a controlled benchmark or a report on a current patched build. Read PC Gamer’s PC review.

Bandai Namco’s requirements give a useful baseline for checking your hardware, but meeting them is not a promise of smooth performance. The minimum target is described by the publisher as stable at over 30 fps at 1080p on Low settings.

Did Bandai Namco fix CODE VEIN II performance?

Bandai Namco has made several performance-related changes since launch, but the official notes do not prove that all reported stutter, frame-rate drops, or image-quality concerns have been resolved.

  • March 4, 2026, Ver. 1.0.4/1.0.5: Reduced model-processing load for some bosses and field enemies across platforms; adjusted rendering resolution on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S when “Prioritize Action” is selected; fixed a Steam issue that caused temporary frame-rate drops after fast travel. Official notes.
  • March 17, 2026, Ver. 1.0.6: Reduced processing load for certain boss fog-wall and blood-pool effects, optimized clothing physics for some enemies and NPCs, and optimized enemy spawning while riding the motorcycle to reduce stuttering. Official notes.
  • September 8, 2026, Ver. 2.01 announcement: Listed further all-platform optimizations to NPC and enemy movement ranges, field-object collision settings, enemy AI processing, and UI rendering. It also announced Steam support for NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation and NVIDIA Reflex, which requires compatible NVIDIA hardware and the latest Game Ready driver. Bandai Namco’s news listing subsequently showed Ver. 2.0.3 released September 24, 2026; that listing confirms update activity but does not describe a broad performance fix. Ver. 2.01 announcement and Bandai Namco news listing.

In other words, the publisher has targeted specific sources of processing load and stutter, and added PC features intended to support performance on compatible hardware. The cited notes do not establish that every launch complaint has been addressed, and they are not substitutes for independent testing of the latest build.

Is CODE VEIN II worth buying?

It is a better fit for players who value build experimentation, exploration, character customization, and a character-led action-RPG campaign more than consistently high enemy variety or confirmed performance across every platform. For a purchase decision, separate the game’s design strengths from the platform-specific launch reports:

  • Consider it if you like experimenting with combat builds, exploring a larger world, and spending time with its characters and story.
  • Be cautious if frame-rate stability is essential to you, especially if you are deciding based on launch-era reviews. Those reports describe PS5 and PC separately and predate the listed optimizations.
  • On PC, compare your hardware with Bandai Namco’s minimum and recommended specifications, while remembering that neither is an independent performance benchmark.
  • When choosing an edition, note that the Mask of Idris expansion is available and included in the Deluxe and Ultimate editions. Check the current store listing for the edition contents and availability in your region. Bandai Namco’s update and DLC listings.

What to know before starting

  • You do not need to play the original. Bandai Namco describes CODE VEIN II as a standalone story.
  • It is single-player. The publisher’s FAQ says the game has no multiplayer.
  • The main story is estimated at about 30 to 40 hours. This is Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2026 estimate, not a measured average.
  • Controls on Steam: The PC version supports both controller and keyboard-and-mouse controls.
  • Content across platforms: The FAQ says the game’s content does not differ between PS5, Steam, and Xbox Series X|S. That does not mean performance is identical on those platforms.
  • Replay options: New Game+ carries over character stats. Although the January 2026 FAQ said there were no difficulty settings, the official April 2026 Ver. 1.0.7 notes added an enemy-difficulty option for replay playthroughs.

The official platforms are PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. See the publisher’s CODE VEIN II page.
