A codex64.dll error usually points to a damaged, incomplete, modified, or unofficial game installation, not a missing Windows component. Do not download this DLL into System32, disable antivirus, or register it blindly.

Which fix applies to you
Use the first description that matches what happened:
- The error appeared after installing or updating a game: verify the game files, then reinstall it from its official launcher or store if verification fails.
- Windows Security quarantined a file: check Protection history, leave suspicious files quarantined, and scan the computer.
- The game came from an unofficial repack or modified installer: remove it and install the legitimate release. A
codex64.dllfile is commonly associated with CODEX release or crack files. - The error says “entry point could not be located”: you probably have a mismatched DLL or incomplete release. Do not replace the file with one from another game.
- The error names another DLL, such as
VCRUNTIME140.dllord3dx9_43.dll: repair that named dependency instead.codex64.dllitself is not a verified Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Epic redistributable file. - Several unrelated programs are failing: investigate malware, disk problems, or broader Windows corruption rather than treating this as one missing game file.
Before changing anything, record the affected program, the complete error text, and the full path shown in the message.

What codex64.dll means
codex64.dll is not part of Windows and is not a standard Microsoft runtime or driver. Public reports associate the filename mainly with CODEX game-release files and unofficial repacks involving games such as Call of Duty: WWII, WWE 2K, SnowRunner, and Jump Force.
That does not prove that every file with this name is malware. Different unrelated binaries can use the same filename and have different hashes, descriptions, publishers, and behavior. Descriptions such as “ACME Corporation,” “WUS,” or corrupted product text are not reliable proof of what installed a particular copy.
The filename also does not establish an official relationship with Epic Online Services. There is no verified official codex64.dll redistributable that you should download separately.
If the file appears in the game directory rather than C:WindowsSystem32, that is normal for an application-private DLL. Windows commonly searches the executable’s folder when loading ordinary desktop application libraries. A 64-bit name does not mean the file belongs in System32, either.
Fix 1: Verify or repair the legitimate game
This is the safest and most likely fix when the game came from an official store or launcher.
Steam
- Open Steam.
- Select Library.
- Right-click the affected game and choose Properties.
- Select Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files.
- Wait for Steam to replace missing or damaged files.
- Launch the game again.
If Steam reports that files could not be repaired, uninstall the game, restart Windows, and install it again from Steam. Do not copy codex64.dll from another game or preserve modified DLLs from the old folder.
Epic Games Store
- Open the Epic Games Launcher.
- Select Library.
- Find the game and select the three dots beside it.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Verify.
- Wait for the scan to finish, then start the game.
If verification does not resolve the error, uninstall the game from the same menu and reinstall it through the launcher.

Microsoft Store or Xbox app
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the game.
- Select the three dots and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test the game.
- If that fails, select Reset only if you are prepared to remove the app’s local data.
- Reinstall the game through the Microsoft Store or Xbox app if necessary.
The exact menu names can vary between Windows 10 and Windows 11. Use the launcher’s own repair or verification feature whenever it is available.
If the installation was unofficial
Uninstall the game and remove the remaining installation folder. Then run a security scan and install the game from its legitimate publisher or store.
Do not try to make a modified release work by restoring a quarantined crack DLL, adding an antivirus exclusion, or downloading a replacement. That may restore the error message’s missing file while leaving a modified executable or unsafe installer in place.
Fix 2: Check Windows Security quarantine
Antivirus software may have removed codex64.dll or another modified game file.

- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Under Current threats, select Protection history.
- Review entries that mention the game folder, installer, or DLL.
- Select an entry to view its detection name and affected path.
If the file came from an unofficial installer or an unknown download, leave it quarantined. Select Remove if Windows Security offers that action, and then uninstall the associated program.
Microsoft documents restoring quarantined files through Protection history and Microsoft Defender. Restoration is appropriate only when the file came from a legitimate, trusted installation and its detection has been independently checked. Do not disable real-time protection or create a permanent exclusion just to launch the game.
Run a scan afterward:
- In Virus & threat protection, select Scan options.
- Choose Full scan.
- Select Scan now.
- If you suspect that malware executed, return to Scan options and run Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
If you ran a suspicious installer, change important passwords from a known-clean device after removing the threat.

Fix 3: Reinstall the game cleanly
A clean reinstall is appropriate when verification fails, the installation was interrupted, or the error says that the procedure entry point could not be found.
- Back up only legitimate save files if they are stored outside the cloud.
- Uninstall the game through its official launcher or through Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Restart Windows.
- Check the old installation folder and remove leftover files.
- Run a Windows Security scan.
- Download the game again from its official launcher, publisher, or store.
- Install it to a new folder if the previous folder was damaged.
- Start the game without copying DLLs from another release.
A missing-file message can also hide a dependency problem. For example, the loader may mention codex64.dll even though a library that it depends on is missing. Reinstalling the complete parent application is safer than swapping individual files.
Fix 4: Install a runtime only when the error names it
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET merely because codex64.dll is missing.
These packages are relevant only when the complete error identifies a corresponding dependency, such as:
VCRUNTIME140.dllorMSVCP140.dll: install the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable.d3dx9_43.dll: repair the game’s DirectX components.- A named .NET runtime: enable or install the required .NET version.
Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable downloads. Choose the architecture required by the application, not simply the architecture of Windows. A 32-bit game generally needs the x86 package even on 64-bit Windows; a 64-bit game needs x64.

- Type

- Enable only the .NET or legacy component specifically required by the application.
- Select OK and restart if Windows requests it.
Installing unrelated runtimes will not create a legitimate codex64.dll.
Fix 5: Repair Windows components only for broader problems
codex64.dll is not established as a protected Windows system file. SFC and DISM will not download a third-party game DLL. Use them when Windows itself is showing corruption symptoms, such as broken built-in applications, repeated system errors, or several unrelated programs failing.

- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. Its System File Checker guidance explains the results and next steps.
Repeatedly running these commands will not repair an unofficial game release. If the game still reports codex64.dll after a clean legitimate reinstall, inspect the launcher logs and Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application for the actual failing module.

Fix 6: Update drivers only when the evidence points there
A graphics or chipset driver can cause a game to crash, but it does not normally provide codex64.dll. Update drivers when the game also shows display failures, device errors, or a crash that clearly identifies a driver.
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device and choose Update driver.
- Select Search automatically for drivers.
- Repeat for a relevant audio, chipset, or network device only when troubleshooting points to it.
- Restart Windows.
For a clean graphics-driver repair, obtain the driver from the GPU manufacturer’s official support page, uninstall the existing package through Settings > Apps, restart, and install the correct 32-bit or 64-bit Windows package.

Why common DLL fixes fail
Do not copy the file to System32 or SysWOW64
Those folders are not general storage for application DLLs. Copying a file with the right name can create a path conflict, install the wrong architecture, or expose Windows and other programs to an untrusted binary.
Do not use a random DLL download
A download site cannot prove that its file matches your game version, architecture, dependencies, publisher, or original installer. The file may contain malware, may be mismatched, or may simply move the error to a different missing dependency.
Do not use regsvr32 normally
regsvr32 is for DLLs that provide the registration entry points expected by COM or ActiveX components. codex64.dll is not established as such a component.

If an official application vendor specifically instructs you to register a known COM DLL, open an administrator Command Prompt and use the exact path supplied by that vendor. Do not run this against codex64.dll:

An entry-point or registration error is expected for many ordinary private application DLLs.
If the error remains
Check these details before taking further action:
- The full path of the executable and DLL named in the message.
- Whether the game is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- The launcher’s repair or installation logs.
- Windows Security’s Protection history.
- Event Viewer > Windows Logs > Application.
- Whether another missing dependency is named after reinstalling.
- Whether other unrelated applications are failing.
If multiple programs suddenly report missing DLLs, run a full or Offline Defender scan and check for disk-health or broader Windows problems. System Restore may help when the trouble began immediately after a system change, but it is not a reason to restore an untrusted game file. FAQ
Is codex64.dll a Windows file?
No. It is an application DLL associated in public reports primarily with unofficial or modified game releases. It is not a standard Windows component.
Is it a Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or Epic file?
There is no verified evidence that it is an official file from any of those products. Install those components only when the error names a dependency that actually belongs to them.

Why is it in the game folder?
Application DLLs are commonly stored beside the executable that loads them. That does not make the file a Windows system DLL.
Should I restore it from quarantine?
Only if it came from a legitimate, trusted installation and its safety has been independently verified. For an unofficial release or suspicious installer, leave it quarantined and reinstall from an official source.
Does the 64 in the name mean I need System32?
No. The filename does not determine its correct location. Keep application files with the application that installed them.
Can I fix it with SFC, DISM, or regsvr32?
Usually not. SFC and DISM repair protected Windows components, while regsvr32 is for registerable DLLs. The normal fix is to repair or reinstall the affected legitimate game or application.
