cofiredm.dll Is Missing: Repair the Windows Component Safely

cofiredm.dll may appear in messages such as “The program can’t start because cofiredm.dll is missing from your computer” or “cofiredm.dll was not found.” You may also see “Error loading cofiredm.dll,” “cofiredm.dll could not be loaded,” or “The file cofiredm.dll is missing or corrupted.”

The important point is that cofiredm.dll is a Microsoft Windows system component, not a Visual C++ redistributable, DirectX file, game library, or ordinary third-party application DLL. Its description is Corrupted File Recovery Diagnostic Module, and it is associated with the Windows component family that also includes cofire.exe, the Corrupted File Recovery Client.

Do not download this file from a random DLL website. Restore Windows components through Windows Update, DISM, and System File Checker instead.

What cofiredm.dll does and where it belongs

Windows identifies cofiredm.dll with the Microsoft Windows Operating System. Its expected location is generally:

%windir%System32cofiredm.dll

On a typical 64-bit installation, System32 contains the 64-bit system files, while SysWOW64 contains many 32-bit compatibility files. That naming is unintuitive, and download pages frequently encourage users to copy a file into the wrong directory.

There is no reliable public Microsoft record establishing one universal file version, size, checksum, or architecture for every Windows 10 and Windows 11 release. Do not use a version list from a download page as proof that a replacement is correct.

An application may display the error even though it does not ship this DLL. The program may simply be the first process that calls a damaged Windows component. Likewise, “specified module could not be found” can mean that cofiredm.dll exists but another dependency it needs is missing.

What usually caused the error

The most likely causes are:

  • A protected Windows file is missing or corrupted.
  • The Windows component store or a previous update is damaged.
  • Antivirus software quarantined a file or detected an impersonating copy.
  • Disk or filesystem damage caused corruption to return.
  • A recent update, driver, or system change exposed the problem.
  • The detailed error names another missing dependency, not cofiredm.dll itself.

A recent cleanup operation should not automatically be blamed. There is no reliable basis for claiming that ordinary disk cleanup specifically deletes this file.

Fix 1: Install Windows updates and restart

Start with servicing Windows normally.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Windows Update.
  3. Choose Check for updates.
  4. Install all available updates.
  5. Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
  6. Start the affected program again.

If the error disappears, the missing or damaged component was likely replaced during servicing. If it remains, continue with DISM and SFC rather than copying a DLL manually.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM, then SFC

Microsoft’s recommended sequence is DISM first, followed by System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected files.

  1. Open Start.
  2. Type Command Prompt.
  3. Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  5. Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Wait for DISM to finish. It can appear paused for a while.
  2. When it completes, run:
sfc /scannow
  1. Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
  2. Restart Windows and test the program again.

Microsoft’s guidance is documented in Using System File Checker in Windows.

Success may appear as SFC reporting that it found corrupt files and repaired them, or that it did not find any integrity violations. If SFC says it found corrupt files but could not repair some of them, run DISM again, restart, and run sfc /scannow a second time.

If DISM cannot obtain repair files through Windows Update, use matching Windows installation media or another valid repair source:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:X:Windows /LimitAccess

Replace X:Windows with the Windows folder on your repair source. The source must match the installed Windows edition and build closely enough for servicing to use it. Microsoft explains this process in Repair a Windows image.

Repeating SFC and DISM without knowing which step changed anything can make troubleshooting tedious. Outbyte PC Repair provides a free scan that shows what it identifies; its repair action is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the appropriate built-in repair path.

Review the SFC result in detail

If the commands report a repair failure, save the relevant SFC entries:

findstr /c:"[SR]" %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log > "%userprofile%DesktopSFCDetails.txt"

Look for SFCDetails.txt on the desktop. It can show whether Windows found a protected-file problem and whether repair was successful.

Fix 3: Check Windows Security quarantine

Defender or another security product may have quarantined a file. It may also have detected a suspicious file that merely used the name cofiredm.dll.

  1. Open Start > Settings.
  2. Select Privacy & security > Windows Security.
  3. Open Virus & threat protection.
  4. Select Protection history.
  5. Review recent detections and quarantine actions.
  6. Expand an entry to see its path, threat name, and available action.

Do not restore a quarantined file just because its filename looks familiar. Restore it only after confirming that it is a genuine Microsoft file in the expected Windows location and has a valid Microsoft digital signature. Microsoft warns that allowing a genuine threat can expose the device. See Protection history in Windows Security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the quarantined item is outside %windir%System32, unsigned, or published by an unexpected company, leave it quarantined and run a full Microsoft Defender scan. A suspicious copy should be removed, not copied into System32.

Fix 4: Verify the file’s path and signature

If the file exists, confirm that it is the file Windows is expected to use.

  1. Press Windows key + E.
  2. Enter %windir%System32 in the address bar.
  3. Look for cofiredm.dll.
  4. Right-click it and select Properties.
  5. Check the Digital Signatures tab.
  6. Select the signature and choose Details.
  7. Confirm that Windows reports the signature as valid and identifies Microsoft as the signer.

A valid signature is strong evidence of authenticity, but it does not prove that the file is the correct copy for every Windows build. If the file is missing, unsigned, or located only in an unexpected application folder, let Windows servicing restore it.

Do not copy a DLL from another computer. Even when the filename matches, the build, architecture, language, or servicing state may not.

Fix 5: Use System Restore after a recent change

If the error began after an update, driver installation, or system change, System Restore may return Windows to an earlier working state.

  1. Press Windows key + R.
  2. Type:
rstrui.exe
  1. Press Enter.
  2. Select Next.
  3. Choose a restore point from before the error began.
  4. Select Scan for affected programs if available.
  5. Confirm the restore point and select Finish.
  6. Restart and test Windows.

System Restore changes system files, drivers, and settings, but it is not a replacement for backups. Use System Restore when the timing strongly points to a recent system change.

Fix 6: Repair Windows without removing apps and files

On supported Windows 11 installations, Windows Update may offer a repair reinstall.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Select System > Recovery.
  3. Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
  4. Select Reinstall now.
  5. Follow the prompts and keep the computer connected to power.

This option reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. If the option is unavailable or the problem continues, use matching Windows installation media for an in-place repair installation. Back up important files first, then follow Microsoft’s Windows installation-media repair guidance.

If Windows will not boot, enter Windows Recovery Environment and try Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore or Startup Repair. Microsoft describes the process in Startup Repair.

Do not use regsvr32 as a routine fix

Do not run:

regsvr32 cofiredm.dll

A system DLL does not normally need manual registration. regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer; it is not a general missing-DLL repair command. Microsoft documents its purpose in regsvr32.

If the command reports that an entry point is missing, that does not repair the file and may distract from the actual Windows servicing problem.

Drivers, Windows Features, and application checks

cofiredm.dll is not documented as a graphics, audio, printer, or other device-driver file. Updating a driver is therefore not the primary fix unless Device Manager also shows a separate hardware problem.

If you do need to investigate drivers:

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand the relevant device category.
  3. Look for a warning icon.
  4. Right-click the device and select Update driver.
  5. Choose Search automatically for drivers.
  6. Restart if Windows installs an update.

Guessing which of many drivers is stale can take longer than checking the actual device state. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing the drivers it identifies; driver installation is done by the full version. It is optional, and it does not replace Windows component repair when cofiredm.dll itself is damaged.

Windows Features are also not a normal repair route for this file. Do not enable or disable random features hoping to recreate it. If the error names a particular application, repair or reinstall that application only when its own installation is damaged. Do not assume that the application ships cofiredm.dll.

Why standalone DLL downloads are unsafe

Avoid websites offering isolated copies of cofiredm.dll. A downloaded file may be:

  • Maliciously modified.
  • The wrong Windows build.
  • The wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
  • Intended for a different language or release.
  • Unsigned or signed by an unexpected publisher.
  • Unable to fix a missing dependency or damaged component store.

The safe sources are Windows Update, DISM using a matching Microsoft installation source, System Restore, Windows 11 repair reinstall, or an in-place repair installation from Microsoft media.

FAQ

Is cofiredm.dll part of Windows?

Yes. It is associated with the Microsoft Windows Operating System and the Corrupted File Recovery Diagnostic Module. It is not a Visual C++ runtime or normal third-party application dependency.

Should I install Visual C++ Redistributable?

Not for this filename alone. Install a Visual C++ package only when the detailed error identifies a runtime such as vcruntime140.dll. cofiredm.dll is repaired through Windows servicing.

Should the file be in System32 or SysWOW64?

Its common Windows location is %windir%System32. On 64-bit Windows, SysWOW64 serves a different compatibility purpose, so do not decide where to place a replacement based on a download page. Let Windows restore the correct copy.

Why does the error name a game or application?

That program may be the caller, not the owner of the DLL. Read the complete error and event details. If another dependency is named, repair that dependency instead of assuming cofiredm.dll is the only problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if DISM and SFC do not fix it?

Check Protection History, run a malware scan, review recent restore points, and use a Windows 11 repair reinstall or an in-place repair installation. If corruption returns, investigate disk health and back up important data before continuing.
