Colorful launched the iGame X870E VULCAN OC V14, a flagship ATX motherboard for AMD’s AM5 platform, in Jakarta on January 28, 2026. It combines X3D-focused BIOS presets, a two-DIMM memory layout, external BCLK controls and record-oriented overclocking hardware.

Its association with a 7.33 GHz Ryzen 7 9800X3D is genuine, but the number needs context: the result was a liquid-nitrogen-cooled, single-core peak-frequency record—not a normal gaming clock or a practical 24/7 target.

What the 7.33 GHz result actually means

Before the formal launch, overclocker “Hero” pushed a Ryzen 7 9800X3D to 7,335.48 MHz on the Vulcan OC. The run used liquid nitrogen and approximately 1.688 volts, and was classified as a single-core peak-frequency record. It was reported on January 1, 2026—27 days before Colorful’s Jakarta launch event.

That is roughly 22 MHz above the reported 7,313 MHz result achieved on Gigabyte’s X870 Aorus Tachyon Ice. The achievement shows that Colorful’s board can serve as a serious extreme-overclocking platform. It does not prove that every 9800X3D can reach 7.33 GHz, that the frequency is sustainable across all cores, or that it improves ordinary gaming performance. The voltage is not a daily-use recommendation, and LN2 operation requires specialist cooling, insulation against condensation and careful monitoring. Tom’s Hardware’s record report provides the relevant context.

X3D tuning features

Colorful’s launch material lists X3D AI Turbo, X3D One-Click Overclocking and an X3D AI High Frame Rate BIOS mode. These features automatically adjust settings such as base clock and PBO-related parameters. The “AI” branding describes automated tuning profiles; it should not be read as evidence of a separate artificial-intelligence performance function.

  • Intelligent Control: ASUS-exclusive AI Overclocking, AI Cooling II, AI Networking II, and AEMP to simplify setup and improve performance
  • Latest M.2 Support: Two onboard PCIe 5.0 M.2 slots and two PCIe 4.0 M.2 slots

In testing, Tom’s Hardware found several profiles for the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, including Turbo modes 1 through 4, Turbo 2/3 with BCLK, and an automatic option. The presets ranged from PBO-style adjustments to BCLK increases. BIOS labels can change between firmware releases, so the exact menu wording may differ. Firmware coverage and benchmark coverage document the tested options.

These profiles are starting points, not guarantees. Results depend on the individual CPU, cooling, memory kit and BIOS version. A setting that boots may still fail a long CPU, memory or gaming workload.

A safer tuning sequence

  1. Update to a BIOS version that supports the installed processor.
  2. Load optimized defaults and establish a stable baseline.
  3. Enable EXPO only after confirming baseline behavior.
  4. Test one X3D preset at a time.
  5. Monitor effective clocks, temperatures, voltage and error logs.
  6. Run repeatable CPU, memory and gaming stability tests.
  7. Return to defaults if the system crashes, repeatedly fails memory training or shows data corruption.

Hardware built for experimentation

Feature Specification
Socket and chipset AM5 / LGA1718, AMD X870E
Power delivery 18+2+2 design, including 18 Vcore stages using 110A DrMOS/SPS components
Memory Two DDR5 DIMM slots; Colorful advertises DDR5-10,000+ MT/s overclocking support
Expansion PCIe 5.0 x16 graphics slot with bifurcation support
Storage Five M.2 sockets: three PCIe 5.0 x4 and two PCIe 4.0 x4; four SATA ports
Networking Realtek 5GbE, Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 5.4
Rear I/O Two USB4 40Gbps Type-C ports plus USB 3.x connectivity
Front USB-C 20Gbps, with up to 60W power delivery when supplemental power is connected
Firmware and diagnostics Dual BIOS, two-character debug display and configurable Vulcan Smart Screen/iGame Smart LCD

Why two DIMM slots matter

The two-slot memory layout sacrifices capacity and expansion flexibility for signal quality. With fewer DIMMs loading the memory path, very high DDR5 frequencies can be easier to pursue. Tom’s Hardware successfully tested a DDR5-8000 kit with a Ryzen 9 9900X and identified the layout as useful for high-speed memory experimentation.

  • AMD Socket AM5: Supports AMD Ryzen 9000 / Ryzen 8000 / Ryzen 7000 Series Processors
  • DDR5 Compatible: 4*DIMMs with AMD EXPO Support

  • Thermals: VRM and M.2 Thermal Guard
  • Connectivity: PCIe 5.0, 4x M.2 Slots, Dual USB4, Front and Rear USB-C, Sensor Panel Link

Colorful’s DDR5-10,000+ MT/s figure is an overclocking capability claim, not a guaranteed operating point. CPU memory-controller quality, the BIOS, module rank, kit validation and voltages all matter. Buyers needing 192GB or 256GB—or simply four-DIMM flexibility—should choose a mainstream board instead.

Storage and PCIe trade-offs

The five M.2 sockets are generous, but users should read the manual before installing several PCIe 5.0 SSDs. Depending on which CPU-connected sockets are populated, lane sharing can enable bifurcation or reduce the main graphics slot from PCIe 5.0 x16 to x8. That is a meaningful edge case for a high-end GPU paired with multiple Gen5 drives.

Independent review: capable, but expensive

Tom’s Hardware found strong overall performance, robust power delivery, useful physical controls and good thermal behavior. The board’s buttons and switches include power, reset, retry, safe boot, BCLK increase/decrease, LN2 and slow-mode controls—features that are valuable on an open test bench and largely irrelevant in a stock gaming tower.

The review also found useful X3D profiles and successful high-speed DDR5 testing, but criticized the dated-looking BIOS interface. Its 32MB BIOS capacity may constrain future firmware flexibility compared with boards using larger chips. That does not prove future AM5 support will fail, but it is a legitimate consideration for buyers planning several generations of upgrades.

The reported price signal was approximately $679.99 if the board reached the US market. That was a review-time figure, not a confirmed September 2026 street price or universal MSRP. The premium is difficult to justify for a stock-clock gaming build, particularly when similarly positioned alternatives may offer stronger availability, BIOS polish or value.

How it compares with alternatives

The comparison set includes the ASUS ROG Crosshair X870E Dark Hero, Gigabyte X870 Aorus Tachyon Ice and ASRock X870E Taichi OCF. Tom’s Hardware cited review-time prices of approximately $699.99, $599.99 and $499.99 respectively; current prices and regional availability should be checked before buying.

  • Choose the Vulcan OC for its integrated display, two-DIMM design, BCLK hardware and combination of general-purpose connectivity with extreme-OC controls.
  • Consider the Tachyon Ice or Taichi OCF if direct overclocking focus or lower review-time pricing matters more than Colorful’s display and feature mix.
  • Consider the Crosshair Dark Hero if an established premium ecosystem and broad support are more important than matching the Vulcan’s specialist controls.
  • Choose a less expensive X870/X870E board for ordinary gaming at stock settings. The 7.33 GHz record does not make the Vulcan faster in games by itself.

Who should buy the iGame X870E Vulcan OC?

It makes sense for an enthusiast who will actually use two-DIMM memory tuning, external BCLK adjustment, manual X3D tuning, diagnostic controls or LN2-oriented features. It is also a credible choice for someone who values the configurable onboard display and premium connectivity enough to accept the price and regional-support caveats.

Skip it if you want a straightforward gaming motherboard, need four DIMM slots, prioritize maximum BIOS headroom, require easy US warranty service, or expect an automated preset to reproduce a competitive overclocking result. Most gamers will see more practical value from investing the difference in the CPU, graphics card, cooling or storage.
