It is not the latest official version. Beepa’s release history lists Fraps 3.5.99, released February 26, 2013, as the newest release. Fraps 3.5.3 is therefore best treated as a legacy build for an older DirectX or OpenGL game—not as a modern Windows recording solution.

What is Fraps 3.5.3?
Fraps 3.5.3 is a specific version of Fraps, the Windows utility developed by Beepa for monitoring frame rates, benchmarking games, taking screenshots, and recording gameplay.

Fraps is not a separate add-on called “3.5.3”; the number identifies one standalone release in the Fraps 3.x series.
Fraps 3.5.3 release date and changelog
Fraps 3.5.3 was released on May 27, 2012. According to the official changelog, it was a corrective maintenance release rather than a major feature update.

More specifically, version 3.5.3 improved recorded-video behavior after a temporary FPS decline, corrected frame loss that could occur after a game paused or stopped rendering, and fixed a startup error reported by some users.
Do not confuse these fixes with the large-AVI change introduced in Fraps 3.5.0. That earlier release added hybrid OpenDML/AVI output for files larger than 4 GB on NTFS drives.
Is Fraps 3.5.3 the latest version?
No. Fraps 3.5.3 is the version named in this article, but Fraps 3.5.99 is the latest official build shown on Beepa’s website. The official site does not show a newer release than 3.5.99.

Use 3.5.3 only when you have a specific reason to preserve that build—for example, a known-good configuration, a period-correct Windows installation, historical footage comparisons, or a legacy game affected by changes in later versions. If you simply want the newest official Fraps installer, start with Fraps 3.5.99.
How to download Fraps safely
The safest starting point is Beepa’s official Fraps download page. The page currently presents Fraps 3.5.99, not a clearly identified 3.5.3 installer.

The listed installer is approximately 2.4 MB, requires administrator rights, and is documented for Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, and Windows 7. If you specifically need 3.5.3, a legitimate archived installer, original installation media, or a copy you previously retained may be necessary. Do not assume that a random “old version” mirror is authentic.
Unofficial archives can contain modified installers, bundled software, malware, or files whose version number has been altered. If you obtain an old installer from outside the official site, verify its provenance and scan it before use; the current official download page should not be represented as providing 3.5.3 when it does not.
Is Fraps 3.5.3 free?
Fraps has a free version, but it is not unrestricted. The official purchase page says registration enables recording for as long as desired, full-size recording, movies without a watermark, and screenshot capture in JPG, PNG, and TGA formats.

System requirements and Windows compatibility
Beepa’s current download information lists these requirements for the latest official Fraps release:
- Windows XP, Windows Server 2003, Windows Vista, or Windows 7.
- A Pentium 4-or-newer-class processor with SSE2 support.
- Administrator rights.
Fraps 3.5.0 and later require Windows XP or newer, so Windows 2000 is not supported from that point onward. Beepa also identifies NVIDIA GeForce and AMD Radeon hardware as offering the fastest capture.
There is no official confirmation on the cited Fraps pages that Fraps 3.5.3 is supported on Windows 10 or Windows 11. A modern installation may run the installer yet still fail because of permissions, overlay hooking, graphics-driver behavior, codec handling, security software, or conflicts with another overlay. A period-correct XP, Vista, or Windows 7 machine—or a separate legacy installation—offers a more predictable environment, although capture performance in a virtual machine must be tested separately.
Recording also requires substantial storage. Fraps commonly produces large AVI files, particularly with full-size capture. Keep ample free space on the destination drive. For older workflows, the 4-GB split-file option may be preferable; NTFS is relevant to Fraps 3.5.x large-file recording.

How to configure and record with Fraps 3.5.3
- Install Fraps from a trusted installer and launch it before starting the game.
- If the game or overlay is not detected, try running Fraps with administrator privileges. An elevated game may also require an elevated Fraps process.
- Open the FPS tab and select a visible overlay corner. Configure benchmarking hotkeys separately from recording hotkeys.
- Open the Movies tab and choose full-size or half-size recording, target FPS, audio capture, file destination, and split-file behavior where available.
- Start the game and confirm that the FPS overlay appears.
- Use the configured video-capture hotkey to begin and end recording. Do not assume a particular default hotkey; check the hotkey shown in your installed build.
- Play back a short test clip and verify the picture, audio, frame continuity, and output location before recording a long session.
Fraps can run minimized to the system tray and includes a startup option, according to the official FAQ. The overlay itself has some system overhead, so compare benchmark results with Fraps enabled and disabled if you are measuring game performance.

Fraps will not start
- Try running it as administrator.
- Confirm that the operating system is within the older Windows range documented by Beepa.
- Temporarily check for interference from security software, compatibility layers, or another overlay.
- Test with a simple DirectX or OpenGL application.
- If you do not need the exact 3.5.3 build, try the later official 3.5.99 release.
Version 3.5.3 did fix a startup error affecting some users. A failure on a current PC, however, may be a modern compatibility problem rather than that historical bug.
The FPS counter does not appear
- Run Fraps before launching the game.
- Confirm that the game uses DirectX or OpenGL.
- Check that the overlay is enabled and assigned to a visible corner.
- Make sure Fraps is not being blocked by permissions or another overlay.
- Test windowed mode if fullscreen hooking fails.
Recording stutters
Possible causes include a temporary drop below the target FPS, a destination drive that cannot sustain the write workload, overly demanding full-size capture, an unsuitable target frame rate, or conflicts with modern drivers and overlays. Version 3.5.3 specifically addressed micro-stutter after a temporary frame-rate decline, but that fix does not eliminate every possible source of stutter.
As a diagnostic step, try half-size capture, a lower target FPS, another destination drive, or a short recording in a different game.

Fraps 3.5.3 corrected a particular missing-frame problem that could occur after a game paused or stopped rendering. If frames are still missing, try the later official build, disable competing overlays, test windowed or borderless mode, lower the capture resolution or target FPS, and compare results in another title.

Audio is missing or out of sync
- Check the selected Windows recording device and permissions.
- Verify whether the game changes its audio device when recording begins.
- Check microphone sample-rate settings.
- Test a short clip before making a long recording.
- Determine whether the issue is specific to the game, operating system, or a long recording.
Later Fraps 3.5.x releases included audio-related fixes involving long-recording synchronization and external input. That history shows audio reliability was a recurring version-specific concern, not that every Fraps 3.5.3 installation will have the problem.
Files are too large
Fraps capture is storage-intensive, especially at full size and high frame rates. Use half-size recording when appropriate, ensure the destination drive has adequate free space, and consider split files for compatibility with older AVI software. Large-file support associated with Fraps 3.5.x depends on the NTFS workflow; do not treat it as a feature first introduced in 3.5.3.
The game crashes or refuses to launch
Disable other overlays and test Fraps with a different game. Try matching elevation levels between the game and Fraps, switching display modes, or temporarily testing without the FPS overlay. Anti-cheat software may block or object to legacy overlay injection. A game may also use a rendering path that Fraps cannot hook correctly.

OBS Studio’s official download page lists version 32.2.2, released August 14, 2026, with Windows 10 and Windows 11 support, as well as macOS and Linux downloads. It is the stronger choice for current PCs, streaming, modern codecs, scenes, webcams, and multiple capture sources.
Bandicam’s official page lists version 8.3.1.2537, dated June 26, 2026, and identifies support for Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7 64-bit. Its free version limits recording and adds a watermark; registration removes those restrictions. It is a better fit than Fraps for users who want a simpler maintained Windows recorder, but it is not a substitute for exact Fraps 3.5.3 behavior.
Verdict
Fraps 3.5.3 is a real historical release with a clearly documented May 27, 2012 changelog. Use it when a particular legacy game, archived setup, or preservation project specifically depends on that build. If you want Fraps without needing 3.5.3 exactly, try the latest official 3.5.99 release first.
For a current Windows 10 or Windows 11 system, modern game, livestream, or long recording, choose OBS Studio or Bandicam instead. Fraps 3.5.3 may still be useful—but mainly as a compatibility tool for the past, not a general-purpose recorder for 2026.
