commig.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called COM+ Migration. If commig.dll is missing or cannot load, the safest solution is usually to repair Windows itself, not download a replacement DLL.
Windows uses this component with its migration engine during setup, upgrades, and repair operations. Windows Setup logs show MigHost loading it from a path such as:

What the commig.dll error means
You may see messages such as:
- “The program can’t start because commig.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “There was a problem starting commig.dll.”
- “Error loading commig.dll. The specified module could not be found.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because commig.dll was not found.”
- “commig.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These are generic Windows loader messages. They do not prove that a game or ordinary application owns the file.

When the error occurs during a Windows 10 or Windows 11 feature upgrade, the problem usually concerns Windows Setup’s migration engine. A Setup log can report a missing binary such as:
BinaryPath=[C:Windowssystem32migrationcommig.dll] does not exist.
An error such as 0x80070002 means that Windows could not find the required file. The file is also associated with the Windows installation component labeled Microsoft-Windows-COM-ComPlus-Setup-DL.
Before repairing anything
- Back up important personal files.
- Note when the error appears:
- while Windows starts;
- when launching a particular program;
- during Windows Update;
- during a feature upgrade or ISO-based setup.
- If an upgrade is in progress, do not delete setup folders or interrupt a rollback until you have confirmed that Windows no longer needs them.
Then work through the fixes below in order.
1. Install pending updates and restart
Time needed: 10–30 minutes, depending on pending updates
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA partially updated Windows installation can leave setup and migration components out of sync.
Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Retry the Windows upgrade or the operation that produced the error.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Click Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Restart and test again.
If the error remains, continue with component repair. Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET solely because a dialog mentions a DLL. Those packages are not a verified redistributable source for commig.dll.
2. Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
DISM repairs the Windows component store. SFC then checks protected system files and replaces damaged copies using Windows’ own servicing resources.
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window if progress appears to pause.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Retry Windows Update, Setup, or the application that displayed the message.
Microsoft recommends this DISM-then-SFC sequence for missing or corrupted Windows files. The computer may need access to Windows Update while DISM obtains repair content.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →A successful result can include:
The restore operation completed successfully.
For SFC, the useful result is:
Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files and successfully repaired them.
If SFC reports that it found no integrity violations, the current protected files are intact, but the original upgrade problem may still involve setup media, rollback data, or the component store. Inspect the setup logs in the next section.
Repeating these commands indefinitely is not useful. If repair results do not change, move to the repair options below. If you prefer help identifying which Windows components need attention instead of repeatedly interpreting servicing output, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for problems; its free scan shows what it finds, while repair is performed by the full version. It is optional, and Windows servicing remains the appropriate primary fix for commig.dll.
3. Use Windows 11’s built-in repair reinstall
Time needed: 30–60 minutes
Windows 11 may offer a repair reinstall that preserves applications, files, and settings while reinstalling the current Windows version.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Click Reinstall now.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet.
- Follow the prompts and restart when requested.
- Retry the failed upgrade or operation.
This option may be unavailable on some devices, including managed computers or installations that do not support the feature. If you do not see it, use official installation media for an in-place repair.

Time needed: 10–20 minutes
If commig.dll appears during an upgrade, the last error line is not always the original cause. Look for the first meaningful failure in the migration section.
Check these locations:
%WINDIR%Panthersetuperr.log
%WINDIR%Panthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetuperr.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesPanthersetupact.log
C:$WINDOWS.~BTSourcesRollbacksetupact.log
To open a location:
- Press Win+R.
- Paste one path into the box.
- Press Enter.
- Open the file in Notepad.
- Press Ctrl+F.
- Search for:
commig.dllMIG0x800700020x8007007f0xc1900101
setuperr.log summarizes setup errors. setupact.log is generally the more detailed diagnostic log. The MIG component identifies Windows’ migration engine.
If the log shows a driver, blocked application, storage problem, or another component failing before commig.dll, repair that earlier failure rather than treating the DLL line as proof that the file is the sole cause.
5. Check antivirus quarantine
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
Security software can quarantine or delete a Windows file after a false detection. Malware can also damage or replace system files, so do not restore a file blindly.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Click Protection history.
- Review recent actions involving
commig.dll. - Check the recorded path, detection name, and action.
Restore a quarantined file only when you can verify that:
- it is in the expected Windows migration directory;
- it has a valid Microsoft digital signature;
- it matches the installed Windows build and architecture;
- a security scan does not indicate active malware.
If any of those checks fail, leave the file quarantined and repair Windows with DISM and SFC. Run a full scan from Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options > Full scan.
Restoring a genuinely malicious file can expose the computer again. If malware is suspected, disconnect from untrusted networks, back up essential personal data, and complete a reputable security investigation before retrying Setup.
6. Repair or reinstall the affected application only when appropriate
Time needed: 10–30 minutes
A normal program can display a generic missing-DLL dialog even when the file is a Windows component. First determine whether the message appears while launching the program or only during Windows Setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If it appears only during a Windows upgrade, repair Windows rather than reinstalling the application.
If one program consistently triggers the message:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps.
- Select Installed apps on Windows 11, or Apps & features on Windows 10.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Advanced options if available.
- Select Repair, then test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, uninstall the program.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the developer’s official installer or the original trusted installation media.
Do not assume that reinstalling a game, Visual C++ runtime, DirectX, or .NET will restore commig.dll. There is no verified consumer commig.dll redistributable.

7. Do not copy the DLL or use regsvr32 as a first fix
Time needed: 2 minutes to verify the correct approach
Avoid downloading commig.dll from random DLL websites. A replacement may contain malware, have the wrong architecture, belong to a different Windows build, or fail to repair the component-store metadata that Setup depends on. It may also create a misleading error later.
Do not copy an old file into:
C:WindowsSystem32
C:WindowsSysWOW64
an application folder
On 64-bit Windows, System32 is the native 64-bit system directory and SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system binaries. The relevant migration directory can also differ by architecture and setup phase. A 32-bit file is not a substitute for a 64-bit file, and an old Windows 7 or Windows 8 copy is not automatically suitable for Windows 10 or Windows 11.
regsvr32 is designed to register DLLs that provide the DllRegisterServer entry point. Some commig.dll builds expose COM registration functions, and Setup logs show the migration plugin being loaded and registered. That does not make manual registration a general repair method.
Running:
regsvr32 commig.dll
will not recreate a missing file, restore component-store metadata, or repair a failed upgrade. Never register a DLL obtained from an untrusted source.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Update drivers only when Setup identifies one
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
A driver error near a commig.dll entry does not prove that the DLL caused the failure. Update a driver only when setupact.log identifies that driver as the first failing component.
For a specific device:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant category.
- Right-click the named device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows and retry Setup.
For graphics, storage, chipset, or network drivers, prefer the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. If manually checking every device and matching driver versions is becoming the difficult part, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies findings, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and install only drivers relevant to the failure.
9. Use System Restore if the problem began after a change
Time needed: 15–45 minutes
System Restore can help when the error began immediately after an update, driver installation, or system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select an appropriate restore point.
- Click Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
- Test the failed operation.
You can also open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore. System Restore rolls back system files, settings, and installed programs, but it does not normally remove personal files.
10. Perform an in-place repair or clean installation
Time needed: 45–120 minutes
Use an in-place repair when DISM, SFC, Windows Update repair, or System Restore cannot correct the installation.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Obtain official Windows 11 or Windows 10 installation media from Microsoft.
- Mount the ISO or insert the installation media.
- While signed in to Windows, open the media and run
setup.exe. - Use media matching the installed language, edition, and architecture.
- Choose to keep personal files and applications when offered.
- Complete Setup and test Windows.
Do not boot directly from the media if your goal is an in-place repair that preserves programs and settings. Starting setup.exe from the running Windows installation is the relevant process.
A clean installation is a last resort. Back up personal data first, verify that you have application installers and recovery information, and use official media. Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025, so a Windows 10 repair is also an opportunity to evaluate migration to a supported Windows release.
Likely causes of a commig.dll failure
| Likely cause | What points to it | Appropriate response |
|---|---|---|
| Damaged Windows component | DISM or SFC reports corruption | Run DISM, then SFC |
| Incomplete upgrade | MIG, Setup logs, or 0x80070002 |
Repair Windows and inspect Setup logs |
| Antivirus quarantine | Protection History lists the file | Verify signature and path, then repair or restore cautiously |
| Wrong or manually copied DLL | Unexpected path, architecture, or version | Remove the substitute and use Windows servicing |
| Disk, filesystem, or malware damage | Repeated corruption or failed repairs | Back up data, scan, and consider repair media |
| Unrelated setup failure | Logs identify another first failure | Fix the named driver, application, or storage issue |
This is troubleshooting guidance rather than a universal frequency ranking. The exact cause depends on when the message appears and what the Setup and servicing logs report.
FAQ
Is commig.dll a Microsoft Windows file?
Yes. It is the COM+ Migration component associated with Windows’ migration engine and Windows Setup.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11Is commig.dll a virus?
The genuine Windows component is not inherently a virus. A file with that name in an unexpected folder, without a valid Microsoft signature, or flagged by security software should be treated cautiously.
Where should commig.dll be located?
Windows Setup commonly loads it from %SystemRoot%System32migrationcommig.dll. The exact path can vary with architecture, Windows build, setup phase, and installation media.
Will reinstalling Visual C++ fix it?
Not normally. There is no verified consumer Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET package that serves as a commig.dll replacement.
What if SFC says it cannot repair the file?
Run DISM first if you have not already done so, then run SFC again. If it still cannot repair the installation, inspect CBS and Setup logs and use Windows Update repair or matching official installation media for an in-place repair.
Should I run regsvr32 commig.dll?
No, not as a general fix. Registration does not restore a missing Windows component or repair the component store.
Does the error mean my game is broken?
Not necessarily. A generic loader dialog can appear while Windows Setup is using the migration engine. Check when the message appears and inspect the MIG entries in Setup logs before reinstalling a game or application.
