Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallcomnctr.dll is a legacy Logitech MouseWare file, not a normal Windows component. If Windows says comnctr.dll is missing, was not found, or could not be loaded, the usual problem is an incomplete MouseWare installation or a leftover startup entry.
The safest solution is to identify the program calling the file, then either reinstall the complete matching MouseWare package or remove MouseWare if your mouse works without its old customization software.

What comnctr.dll belongs to
COMNCTR.DLL is described as Control Center Common Support and is associated with Logitech MouseWare. Logitech’s own MouseWare removal instructions list COMNCTR.DLL, EVENTEX.DLL, and other related files as part of that software.
MouseWare is legacy Logitech mouse software intended for Windows XP or older. Logitech’s current support listing identifies MouseWare version 9.79.1 build 25, last updated March 30, 2010, and currently reports that no downloads are available.

Some file indexes commonly report the DLL as:
- 32-bit
- Version
9.71.0.0 - Approximately
0.1 MB
Treat those details as commonly indexed metadata, not proof that a current official installer is available or that every copy has the same version.
The Microsoft name sometimes shown in file metadata should not be interpreted as proof that Microsoft developed MouseWare. MouseWare is Logitech software, and the file is not part of Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or the protected Windows system files.

Look for wording such as:
- “The program can’t start because comnctr.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “The code execution cannot proceed because comnctr.dll was not found.”
- “There was a problem starting comnctr.dll.”
- “Error loading comnctr.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The specified procedure could not be found.”
A message involving EM_EXEC.EXE or EVENTEX.DLL strongly points toward MouseWare. Historical MouseWare errors include a missing export from COMNCTR.DLL, which usually means the DLL exists but is the wrong version for the Logitech program calling it.
Check whether MouseWare is installed
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for MouseWare, Logitech MouseWare, or an old Logitech mouse utility.
- If you find it, note whether it can be repaired or uninstalled.
- Also open Settings > Apps > Startup and look for an old Logitech or MouseWare entry.
On Windows 10, the equivalent path is Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
If the mouse works normally and you do not need old button assignments, scrolling controls, or battery indicators, removing MouseWare is usually the better choice.
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the complete MouseWare package
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
This is the most likely fix when the error names EM_EXEC.EXE, EVENTEX.DLL, or another Logitech executable. It is also the correct response to a missing-export error.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do not replace only COMNCTR.DLL. MouseWare files must come from compatible builds. Mixing EM_EXEC.EXE, EVENTEX.DLL, and COMNCTR.DLL from different releases can create errors even when every file is present.
Try the Windows repair option first
- Press Windows + I.
- Select Apps.
- Open Installed apps.
- Find MouseWare or the Logitech mouse program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the mouse software again.
If there is no Repair option, use the original Logitech or computer-manufacturer installer instead.

Reinstall MouseWare cleanly
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the MouseWare entry.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Follow the removal wizard.
- Restart Windows, even if the wizard does not request it.
- Obtain the original MouseWare installer from Logitech, the mouse manufacturer, or the computer manufacturer’s verified recovery media.
- Run the installer using Run as administrator.
- Restart Windows again.
- Test the program that previously reported
comnctr.dll.
If the installer is designed for Windows XP or an older system, right-click it, select Properties, open the Compatibility tab, and use the compatibility troubleshooter. Compatibility mode does not guarantee that MouseWare will work correctly on Windows 10 or Windows 11, but it can help an old installer start.
What success looks like
The error should disappear when the same MouseWare release supplies all of its files. The Logitech utility should open without a missing-export message, and its mouse settings should be available.

If the installer fails, stops partway through, or the error remains, do not copy a DLL from another computer. Remove the incomplete installation and decide whether MouseWare is still necessary.
Fix 2: Uninstall MouseWare and remove its startup trigger
Time needed: 10–20 minutes
Use this fix when the mouse works but Windows displays the error during every boot. In that situation, a stale startup command may be trying to launch EM_EXEC.EXE after MouseWare itself has been deleted or damaged.
Remove the installed program
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Search for MouseWare and Logitech mouse utilities.
- Uninstall the relevant entries.
- Restart Windows.
If Settings cannot remove it:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select MouseWare in Programs and Features.
- Choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
Disable a leftover startup item
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Look for an entry clearly identified as Logitech, MouseWare, or
EM_EXEC. - Select it.
- Choose Disable.
- Restart Windows.
You can also check Settings > Apps > Startup.
Do not disable unrelated entries based only on a vague name. If the startup item is not clearly identified, open its file location or inspect its publisher before changing it.
What success looks like
Windows should start without the comnctr.dll message. Basic mouse movement and clicking should continue to work through the standard Windows mouse driver. You may lose legacy Logitech features such as custom buttons, special scrolling, or battery reporting.
If you still need those features, reinstall a compatible Logitech application instead of leaving a broken MouseWare startup entry enabled.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Time needed: 5–15 minutes
A security product, failed cleanup, or manual deletion can remove one MouseWare file while leaving its startup program behind.
Check Windows Security Protection History
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review entries related to MouseWare,
COMNCTR.DLL,EM_EXEC.EXE, or the directory where MouseWare was installed. - Select an entry to view its detection name, path, and action.
Do not restore a file solely because its filename matches. Before restoring anything, confirm that:

- The path belongs to the known MouseWare installation.
- The file came from a legitimate Logitech or OEM installer.
- The detection is being treated as a verified false positive.
- A full antivirus scan does not find related threats.
If the file was legitimately removed, reinstall the complete MouseWare package instead of restoring a standalone DLL.
What success looks like
After a verified restore or complete reinstall, the calling Logitech program should launch without the error. If Windows Security immediately quarantines the file again, leave it quarantined and investigate the detection rather than repeatedly restoring it.
Fix 4: Update or reinstall the mouse driver
Time needed: 10–25 minutes
This fix is useful when the problem started after changing mice, removing an old Logitech driver, or restoring a system image. It is separate from replacing COMNCTR.DLL: Device Manager manages the device driver, while MouseWare contains the legacy control software that may call the DLL.
Remove the old device entry
- Right-click the Start button.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Right-click the Logitech mouse or HID-compatible mouse.
- Select Uninstall device.
- If offered, select the option to remove the driver package only when you are certain it is the obsolete Logitech package.
- Select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reconnect the mouse.
Windows should reinstall a compatible standard driver automatically. For special buttons or advanced controls, install the current software supported by your exact Logitech model rather than MouseWare unless the model specifically requires the old package.
When checking several devices and guessing which driver is stale becomes tedious, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for driver issues and identify updates; its free scan shows what it found, while driver installation is handled by the full version. It is optional, and a complete reinstall of the Logitech software remains the definitive fix when the error belongs to that software.
What success looks like
The mouse should appear without a warning icon in Device Manager. Basic pointing should work after the restart. If the comnctr.dll error continues, the remaining problem is probably the old MouseWare startup component rather than the device driver.
Fix 5: Use System Restore for a recent regression
Time needed: 15–30 minutes, plus restart time
System Restore is appropriate when the error began immediately after a driver change, system restore, software installation, or cleanup operation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
rstrui.exe. - Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, when available.
- Review the programs and drivers that will be removed or rolled back.
- Select Close.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, installed programs, and drivers. It normally does not remove personal files, but review the affected-program list before confirming.
What success looks like
The old Logitech installation should return to the state it had at the selected restore point. If the error returns after reinstalling or removing MouseWare, undoing that recent change may identify the trigger.
If no suitable restore point exists, continue with a clean MouseWare uninstall or matching-package reinstall.

Fix 6: Repair Windows components only when Windows has broader problems
Time needed: 15–30 minutes
COMNCTR.DLL is associated with MouseWare, so SFC and DISM are not the primary repair tools. Microsoft’s System File Checker repairs protected Windows system files, while DISM repairs the Windows component store. Neither command normally recreates a missing third-party Logitech DLL.
Use them when you also have symptoms such as failed Windows components, damaged built-in applications, repeated system file errors, or update failures.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until the scan reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
Run DISM first, then SFC. If SFC reports that it repaired files, restart and test again. If both tools report no integrity violations but comnctr.dll is still missing, return to the MouseWare steps.

It is optional, and it will not replace the need to reinstall MouseWare when that legacy package is the actual source.
Do not use regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair
Do not blindly run:
regsvr32 comnctr.dll
regsvr32 is intended for DLLs that provide registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. There is no reliable evidence that the MouseWare build of COMNCTR.DLL is meant to self-register.
A missing-export error means that another program cannot find a function it expects inside the DLL. Registering the file does not add that function and does not make mismatched MouseWare files compatible.
If regsvr32 reports that the entry point is missing, that indicates the command is inappropriate for this DLL. Reinstall the complete matching MouseWare package instead.

Do not download the DLL from a random archive
Downloading comnctr.dll from a DLL archive and copying it into System32, SysWOW64, or an application directory is unsafe and often ineffective.
Possible problems include:
- The file belongs to the wrong MouseWare release.
- The architecture does not match the calling program.
- The exported functions do not match
EM_EXEC.EXEorEVENTEX.DLL. - The file may be modified or malicious.
- Windows may continue launching a broken startup entry.
- Copying the file to the wrong directory can create DLL search-order problems.
The safe sources are the original Logitech or computer-manufacturer installer, verified recovery media, or a known-good backup from the same installation. Restoring the entire matching package is safer than copying one DLL.

The commonly indexed COMNCTR.DLL metadata identifies a 32-bit file. A 64-bit version of Windows can run 32-bit applications, so seeing 32-bit MouseWare on a 64-bit Windows installation is not automatically an error.

The important points are:
- A 64-bit application cannot use a 32-bit DLL as a replacement.
- A 32-bit application needs the matching 32-bit library.
- A DLL in
System32is not automatically a 64-bit file in every troubleshooting context. - The directory expected by the original installer matters more than the folder name.
- A “not designed to run on Windows” message can indicate corruption, architecture mismatch, or incompatible versions.
Do not use the 32-bit metadata as a reason to copy the file into a Windows system directory.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWhy the error may have appeared
The most likely causes are:
| Likely cause | What usually happened | Best response |
|---|---|---|
| Mixed MouseWare files | An older and newer MouseWare component were combined | Uninstall, restart, and reinstall one matching package |
| Incomplete installation | Setup stopped or a file was deleted | Reinstall the complete package |
| Leftover startup entry | MouseWare was removed but EM_EXEC.EXE still launches |
Uninstall fully and disable the identified startup item |
| Antivirus quarantine | Security software removed the DLL | Verify the detection, then reinstall from a trusted source |
| System Restore or rollback | Files and registry entries returned to different states | Reinstall the matching package or use a restore point consistently |
| Newer mouse hardware | Old MouseWare remained after changing devices | Remove MouseWare and use supported current software |
| Legacy incompatibility | XP-era software is launching on a modern Windows version | Remove it if basic mouse functions work |
| Windows corruption | Broader system repair symptoms are present | Run DISM, then SFC |
A missing-file message and a missing-export message are not the same. Missing-file errors indicate that the loader cannot find the DLL or one of its dependencies. Missing-export errors usually indicate that the DLL is present but does not contain the function expected by the calling executable.
Frequently asked questions
Is comnctr.dll a Windows file?
No reliable evidence identifies it as a protected Windows component. It is associated with Logitech MouseWare, and Logitech’s removal documentation treats it as one of that program’s files.
Is comnctr.dll part of Visual C++, DirectX, or .NET?
No credible evidence connects it to those Microsoft runtime packages. Installing unrelated runtimes is unlikely to repair a MouseWare installation.
Why does Windows mention Microsoft?
Some file databases display Microsoft in metadata fields. That does not establish that Microsoft developed MouseWare. The product relationship and file list point to Logitech MouseWare.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Why does EM_EXEC.EXE report a missing export?
The DLL may exist, but EM_EXEC.EXE expects a function that this copy does not export. A mixed or incompatible MouseWare installation is the most likely explanation.
Why does EVENTEX.DLL mention comnctr.dll?
EVENTEX.DLL is another Logitech-related library reported in historical MouseWare startup errors. Reinstalling compatible MouseWare files together is safer than replacing either DLL separately.
Should I run SFC?
Run SFC when Windows has broader corruption symptoms. Do not expect it to recreate a missing MouseWare DLL.
Should I register the file?
No. regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command, and there is no reliable evidence that this MouseWare support DLL provides the registration entry point required by that tool.
What if the mouse still works?
Uninstall MouseWare and disable any clearly identified leftover Logitech startup item. Windows can usually provide basic mouse operation without the old customization software.
What information should I collect if the problem remains?
Record the exact error text, calling executable, full path shown for the DLL, Windows version, MouseWare version, whether the mouse still needs custom buttons or scrolling, and any relevant Event Viewer details. The calling executable is especially important because different legacy components can load similarly named files.
