Epic launched Fortnite and the Epic Games Store on iPhone on August 16, 2024, for users in the European Union. It was not a worldwide iPhone release, and Fortnite did not return to Apple’s App Store as part of that launch. Instead, EU users installed Fortnite through Epic’s alternative marketplace or another approved marketplace.

That distinction matters because “Fortnite is coming to iPhones” could describe several different things: a return to Apple’s App Store, a native installation from an alternative store, or cloud streaming in Safari. Epic’s 2024 announcement concerned native distribution through an alternative marketplace in the EU.

Why Fortnite disappeared from iPhone
On August 13, 2020, Epic added a direct-payment option to Fortnite that bypassed Apple’s in-app payment rules. Apple removed the game from the App Store, beginning the long-running Apple–Epic dispute.
Epic’s January 2024 announcement said it planned to bring Fortnite and the Epic Games Store to iOS in Europe later that year. That plan became possible because EU regulation changed the rules for designated digital “gatekeepers,” including Apple.

How the EU changed the outcome
The European Union’s Digital Markets Act created a framework under which Apple must support certain forms of alternative app distribution and payment competition on iOS. That did not turn iPhone into an unrestricted sideloading platform worldwide.
Apple still operates the notarization and security process for alternative marketplaces and applies technical, contractual, and compliance requirements. Apple’s business terms and fees also remained central to its dispute with Epic. The EU launch was therefore a regulatory consequence specific to the markets covered by the DMA—not a global change to Apple’s iPhone policy.

Epic described this as the starting catalog and said it intended to add more developers and apps. The announcement also made the crucial Android comparison clear: the Epic Games Store was available worldwide on Android, but only in the EU on iPhone.

How EU users installed Fortnite
For the original 2024 EU launch, the broad installation process was:
- Open Epic’s official Fortnite or Epic Games Store page in Safari.
- Start the Epic Games Store installation.
- Approve marketplace installation in the iPhone’s Settings app.
- Return to Safari and confirm the installation.
- Open the Epic Games Store from the Home Screen.
- Select Fortnite and tap Get.
Epic said native Fortnite play required iOS 17.6 or later at launch. That is a historical requirement, not a guarantee of the current minimum version. Apple and Epic have changed operating-system requirements and Settings labels since 2024, so use Epic’s current installation guide for live instructions.
EU users could also access Fortnite through AltStore PAL where applicable. Alternative marketplace availability depended on the user’s region and the rules in force at the time.

Where is Fortnite available now?
The 2024 launch answer and the current answer are not identical. Epic’s support documentation now describes Fortnite as available through Apple’s App Store in many regions, while its Epic Games Store remains restricted to specific iOS markets. Epic also lists cloud gaming as an option where native installation is unavailable.

Epic’s support pages do not present a perfectly consistent current country list. In particular, the retrieved pages differ over whether Brazil is included. For that reason, readers should check the live regional page rather than rely on a universal list copied into an article. The current documentation is available through Epic’s iOS and iPadOS country guide and its Fortnite iOS support page.

Native Fortnite versus cloud gaming
A native installation is generally better for frequent players. It avoids continuous video streaming and is better suited to playing without a strong internet connection. It still requires a compatible device, operating-system version, storage, and access to an eligible distribution route.
Cloud gaming is the practical alternative in unsupported regions. Epic lists Xbox Cloud Gaming, GeForce NOW, and Amazon Luna as options. Cloud play avoids a large native download, but image quality and responsiveness depend on bandwidth and latency. Queues, plan limits, regional availability, browser support, and account requirements vary by service.
Fortnite itself is free to download, but optional in-game purchases are separate from hardware, cloud-service plans, or accessories. A controller is optional; it may improve comfort, but touch controls can be enough for some players.

What happens when EU users travel?
Epic’s 2024 EU announcement said that EU residents who had installed the Epic Games Store and Fortnite could continue playing while outside the EU for up to 30 days, subject to Apple’s regional rules.
That was a launch-era statement, not a current universal guarantee. Epic’s present support documentation describes different periods and conditions for marketplace access outside supported territories. Travelers should consult the current support page rather than assume the original 30-day rule still applies unchanged.

- The Epic Games Store does not appear: You may be outside an eligible market, using an unsupported device, or running an outdated iOS or iPadOS version.
- The installation prompt fails: Marketplace installation may need to be approved in Settings before you return to Safari.
- Fortnite is missing from Apple’s App Store: That may be expected in a market where Epic distributes it through an alternative marketplace.
- You are searching for the Epic Games Store in Apple’s App Store: In regions using alternative distribution, the marketplace is installed through Epic’s official website rather than like an ordinary App Store app.
- A 2024 guide no longer matches your iPhone: Installation labels and minimum versions have changed. Follow Epic’s current guide.
- You cannot install it while traveling: Regional eligibility and time-out rules may restrict installation, updates, or continued access.
Changing an Apple ID region, spoofing a location, or attempting to bypass marketplace eligibility is not a reliable or recommended solution. Availability depends on actual regional eligibility and the current rules.
What the launch changed—and what it did not
The EU launch demonstrated that alternative iPhone marketplaces could operate in practice under the Digital Markets Act. It gave Epic a direct distribution channel and reduced its reliance on Apple’s storefront in the covered market.
