If compatprovider.dll appears in an error, it is usually a Windows servicing problem, not a missing game or application runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use the path that matches where the error appears:
- DISM, Windows Update, Windows Setup, WinRE, or WinPE: repair Windows components first.
- An offline WIM, VHD, or FFU image: check the image, servicing source, and ADK/DISM compatibility.
- After an antivirus alert: inspect quarantine before restoring anything.
- After an update, upgrade, or failed repair: try System Restore or an in-place repair install.
- Only inside one ordinary application: verify the application and its launch shortcut, but do not assume that application owns this DLL.
- “The specified module could not be found”: the named file may exist while one of its dependencies is missing. Check DISM logs and Event Viewer rather than copying another DLL.
Do not download compatprovider.dll from a random DLL website. A replacement can have the wrong Windows build, architecture, servicing level, signature, or hidden malware, and it may not repair the damaged component store that caused the error.

What compatprovider.dll actually is
compatprovider.dll is a Microsoft Windows DISM provider. DISM, or Deployment Image Servicing and Management, services Windows images, packages, drivers, features, WIM files, FFU files, and VHDs. Microsoft documents DISM as part of Windows and also distributes it through the Windows Assessment and Deployment Kit (ADK). See Microsoft’s DISM technical reference.

%windir%System32DismCompatProvider.dll
Typical paths include:
C:WindowsSystem32DismCompatProvider.dll
X:WindowsSystem32DismCompatProvider.dll
The X: path normally belongs to Windows Recovery Environment or Windows PE, not the installed Windows volume. Microsoft shows this path in a DISM image-mount example.
This is not a Visual C++ runtime, DirectX component, .NET library, or general-purpose application dependency. The exact provider internals are not fully documented publicly, so treat it as a Windows servicing component rather than guessing which application uses it.
Microsoft file lists confirm versions for Windows 7, Windows 8 and Server 2012, and Windows 10. Historical examples include both x86 and x64 builds, such as Windows 7 version 6.1.7601.17514, Windows 8 version 6.2.9200.16384, and Windows 10 version 10.0.10240.16384. These are examples, not universal current versions. Your correct file depends on the Windows edition, architecture, build, and update history.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteOn 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains native 64-bit files, while 32-bit processes use file-system redirection to SysWOW64. The folder name alone does not prove which architecture a process is using. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
Fix 1: Update Windows, then repair its components
This is the safest first repair when the error appears during servicing or recovery.
Install pending updates
On Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install everything offered.
- Restart the computer.
On Windows 10:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Update & Security.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install the updates and restart.
Microsoft’s current instructions are available in its Windows Update guide.
Run DISM and SFC in the correct order
- Open Start.
- Type
cmd. - Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Wait for the operation to finish. Do not close the window just because the progress percentage appears stalled.
When DISM reports that the restore operation completed successfully, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart Windows after SFC finishes.
Microsoft specifically recommends repairing the component store with DISM before using System File Checker. Its SFC repair guide explains the same sequence.
A successful repair usually means DISM completes without an error and SFC reports that it found no integrity violations or repaired corrupted files. Repeat the original operation that produced the error to confirm the result.
If manually comparing Windows builds and repeating DISM commands is becoming guesswork, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problems it detects and show what needs attention; repairs are performed by the full version, but it is optional and does not replace Microsoft’s repair commands.
Fix 2: Use a matching repair source when DISM cannot repair itself
DISM normally obtains replacement files through Windows Update. If Windows Update is broken, disabled, or unable to provide the correct files, use matching Windows installation media or another approved repair source.
The source must match the installed Windows version and architecture. Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer.
The general command is:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the actual path to the matching source.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
If DISM says the source is unusable, check the following:
- The source is for the same Windows release and architecture.
- The source contains the required Windows component files.
- The path is correct and accessible.
- The installation media is not damaged.
- You are not mixing a 32-bit source with a 64-bit installation.
Run sfc /scannow again after DISM completes successfully.
Fix 3: Check whether antivirus removed the file
A security product can quarantine or delete a damaged file. That is possible, but the quarantine record does not prove the file was safe.
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an entry involving
CompatProvider.dll. - Check the detected path, threat name, and action.
- Restore the file only if you have confirmed the detection is a false positive.
- Run Scan options > Full scan.
- If compromise is a concern, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
Do not restore a file merely because its filename is correct. A malicious DLL can use the same name in the wrong directory. After any appropriate restoration, run DISM and SFC so Windows can validate and repair the component.

Fix 4: Check the Windows disk and system logs
If the file repeatedly disappears, repairs fail, or Windows reports new corruption after every restart, the storage device or file system may be involved.
First back up important files. Then:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
chkdsk C: /scan
If Windows reports disk errors, follow its instructions before attempting more DLL replacements. Also inspect Event Viewer:
- Press Win+X.
- Select Event Viewer.
- Open Windows Logs > System.
- Look for repeated disk, NTFS, or storage-controller errors.
A failing drive can undo a successful component repair. Resolve the storage problem before relying on a reinstall.
Fix 5: Repair an interrupted upgrade or Setup operation
Windows Setup and Windows PE can load CompatProvider.dll from a temporary or recovery environment. If the error began during a failed upgrade, do not copy the file from C:Windows into an X: environment by hand.
First install pending updates and run the DISM/SFC sequence above. If the problem remains, perform an in-place repair:
- Back up important data.
- Obtain Windows installation media that matches the installed edition and architecture.
- Start Windows normally.
- Open the media in File Explorer.
- Run
setup.exe. - Follow the setup screens.
- Choose the option to keep personal files and apps.
An in-place repair replaces Windows system components while preserving the selected data and applications. Read each setup screen carefully before continuing.
Fix 6: Use System Restore if the problem is recent
System Restore is useful when compatprovider.dll errors began immediately after an update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or other system change.
- Press Win+R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the problem began.
- Select Scan for affected programs.
- Review the changes.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore normally preserves personal files but rolls back system files, drivers, registry settings, and installed programs. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guide.

Fix 7: Handle ADK and offline-image errors correctly
If the error occurs while servicing a WIM, VHD, or FFU image, the installed Windows copy may not be the cause. Check:
- The Windows image’s version and architecture.
- The DISM executable being used.
- The installed ADK version.
- The servicing source.
- Whether the host DISM and target image are compatible.
Use the DISM version and ADK appropriate for the image. Do not copy CompatProvider.dll independently into an ADK or deployment folder. Microsoft’s DISM supported platforms documentation covers compatibility requirements.
To check the installed Windows copy, run:
dir "%windir%System32DismCompatProvider.dll"
The command confirms whether the expected path contains a file. It does not by itself prove that the file is genuine, correctly signed, or compatible.
Drivers and Windows Features
A driver is not the normal owner of compatprovider.dll, and enabling a random Windows feature will not usually restore it. Use Device Manager only when the error appears alongside a specific device or driver failure:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand the relevant device category.
- Right-click the affected device.
- Select Update driver or Uninstall device.
- Restart Windows and install the driver from the hardware manufacturer or Windows Update.
If you are manually hunting through device vendors and versions, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify driver updates; the free scan shows detected issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version, and it is not required to repair DISM.
Do not install Visual C++, DirectX, .NET, or a driver solely because compatprovider.dll appears in a message. There is no verified connection between this Windows provider and those runtimes.
What not to do
Do not run regsvr32
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose COM registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general missing-file repair command, and there is no evidence that CompatProvider.dll should be registered this way.
Microsoft documents the utility in its regsvr32 command reference. Running this command can produce another error without repairing DISM.
Do not copy a DLL from another computer
A file from another Windows installation can have a different build, architecture, language, servicing state, or signature. The filename matching is not enough. DISM, SFC, matching repair media, or an in-place repair is safer.
Do not use Reset this PC as a first step
Reset this PC > Keep my files preserves personal files but normally removes user-installed desktop applications. It is not equivalent to an in-place repair that keeps applications. Review Microsoft’s recovery options before choosing reset or clean installation.
FAQ
Is compatprovider.dll a third-party application file?
The strongest verified evidence identifies it as a Microsoft DISM provider. A generic application-style error does not prove that a game or ordinary application bundled it.
Where should the file be?
The normal installed-Windows location is:
%windir%System32DismCompatProvider.dll
Windows PE or WinRE may use an X: path instead.
Is it always 32-bit?
No. Microsoft file lists show both x86 and x64 variants. The correct architecture depends on the Windows environment and build.
What if the file exists but the error remains?
“The specified module could not be found” can identify a missing dependency rather than the named DLL. Check DISM logs, Event Viewer, component-store health, and the environment in which the failure occurs.
When should I replace Windows?
Escalate to System Restore, matching repair media, or an in-place repair when DISM and SFC cannot restore the component, the upgrade remains broken, or storage corruption keeps returning. If offline servicing alone fails, troubleshoot the image and ADK rather than the installed Windows copy.
