It is optional: choosing Prestige resets the weapon’s level and relocks most earned attachments, but grants weapon-specific and universal rewards. There are two weapon prestige resets, followed by Weapon Prestige Master, which adds 250 levels.
How Weapon Prestige works
Weapon Prestige is separate from Classic Player Prestige, which is a player-level progression system. This guide covers only the weapon system. Activision says the option appears after a weapon reaches its maximum level; check the weapon’s level and attachment list in the in-game Weapon or Gunsmith menus, since those details vary by weapon. Activision’s progression guide explains the reset and rewards.
- Level a weapon to its maximum. Weapon progression is available in supported modes where the weapon is used, including Co-Op Campaign, Multiplayer, and Zombies. Activision’s deep dives described Warzone integration as beginning with Season 1; that launch-era timing is not a guarantee of current availability, so check the game’s current menus. The Multiplayer deep dive and Zombies deep dive describe the mode coverage.
- Select Weapon Prestige 1. At maximum level, choose the prestige option in the weapon’s progression menus. The weapon returns to level 1, and its Weapon Builds and Blueprints reset. Earned attachments relock and need to be earned again, except optics, which remain unlocked. Listed customization—including blueprints, camos, reticles, charms, decals, and stickers—is retained.
- Use the first prestige rewards. Prestige 1 grants a unique attachment for that weapon, one attachment of your choice for permanent unlock, and a universal Prestige 1 camo. The game automatically creates a Prestige Build with the prestige attachment and camo applied.
- Reach maximum level again and select Prestige 2. This resets the weapon again. Optics, camos, and permanently unlocked attachments remain available. Prestige 2 grants a second universal camo, another permanent attachment unlock, and a weapon-specific charm.
- Continue into Weapon Prestige Master. After both weapon prestiges, the weapon keeps its previous level and gains a 250-level Master progression. Activision says attachments earned through weapon progression are then permanently unlocked. The support guide lists Prestige Master camos at levels 100, 150, and 200, along with XP rewards.
What resets—and what stays unlocked
The reset is substantial, but it does not erase everything. The exact retained items differ by prestige stage, so use the distinctions below rather than assuming all attachments or customization behave the same way.

Should you prestige a weapon?
Prestiging trades immediate access to a finished build for rewards and more progression. The reset is optional, so there is no need to prestige a weapon simply because it has reached maximum level.
- Prestige when: you want that weapon’s unique attachment, the universal camo, the Prestige 2 charm, or the longer Master progression—and are willing to rebuild attachment access.
- Wait when: you depend on the weapon’s current build and do not yet value the prestige rewards enough to lose access to most earned attachments temporarily.
There is no single best weapon or fastest method established by the official progression rules. Pick a mode that suits how you want to play and where the weapon is supported; confirm current mode availability in-game because seasonal integration can change.

How many weapons can be prestiged?
Weapon Prestige applies to the weapons covered by the system. The official launch guide listed 30 weapons at launch, while the Zombies deep dive said future-season weapons would also be covered. The figure of 30 is specifically a launch count, not the current total. See the launch weapons guide.
