Use Battle Training to learn one skill at a time: start with movement and Ki, add offense, then practice defense before combining them into full attack sequences. The game lets you choose a starting level, so returning players can move past the basics. The button examples below use Standard controls; check the in-game control explanation if you use Classic or have remapped inputs.

Where to start: Battle Training or CPU practice?

Battle Training is the structured route for learning the game’s mechanics. Bandai Namco describes it as covering beginner fundamentals through intermediate and advanced actions, with instruction from Piccolo and Gohan and an appearance by Goten. Choose a starting point that matches your experience: begin with flying, Ki Blasts, and counters if you are new, or move on to more advanced techniques if you already know the series’ combat basics. Bandai Namco’s training overview describes the curriculum.

If you want to practice against an opponent rather than follow lessons, use CPU training. A dated update notice lists a “Guarding After Attacks” option for CPU training, added on 20 January 2025 in version 2008.007.003.005.004. That confirms the feature for that update; it does not establish what the latest build is in October 2026. Read the update notice.

Choose the control scheme before drilling inputs

The game offers Standard and Classic controls. Bandai Namco recommends Standard, while Classic is designed to resemble controls from earlier Budokai Tenkaichi games. That recommendation is not proof that one scheme suits every player. Pick the layout you can use reliably, then keep it consistent while learning a technique. Changing schemes also affects QTE controls.

All button notation in this guide refers to Standard controls: R1/RB means the right shoulder button, and a direction means the corresponding input on your controller. The precise control prompt can vary by selected scheme, character, and remapping, so confirm it in the game’s controls explanation before practicing. The beginner guide covers the Standard scheme and related inputs.

Practice movement and approaches first

Combat takes place in three dimensions, so movement is more than closing a gap on a flat plane. Learn basic movement and short dashes, then distinguish the two larger approaches below. A dash that gets you into range is not the same as a dash meant to change sides.

Dragon Dash

Use Dragon Dash to close distance quickly. Practice starting it from different ranges and directions, then learn to stop or adjust your approach before attacking. The goal is to arrive under control rather than rush into an opponent’s guard.

Z-Burst Dash

Z-Burst Dash can take you behind an opponent during a Dragon Dash. It uses more Ki and is harder to guard, making it a more costly but potentially less predictable approach. Drill it separately: first recognize when you have enough Ki, then practice the timing and direction needed to get behind the target. Do not spend the resource automatically whenever you dash.

Bandai Namco’s combos and counterattacks guide explains the distinction and the related movement inputs.

Build offense in small, repeatable pieces

Learn a short sequence before trying to improvise a long combo. Rush Chains, Smash Attacks, and follow-ups each have a different job; practicing them separately makes it easier to see which part of an attack creates an opening.

Rush Chains

A Rush Chain uses up to four rush inputs before a follow-up input. Start by practicing the basic string, then add the follow-up once you can land the preceding hits consistently. The available action after a chain can differ by character, so do not assume one character’s sequence works identically for the entire roster.

Smash Attacks and follow-ups

Smash Attacks build power while charged. Practice holding the attack long enough to recognize how the charge changes the hit, then try a fully charged Power Smash and look for the follow-up opportunity it creates. Keep the charge drill separate from your Rush Chain practice at first; once both are reliable, test how they fit into a larger sequence.

The official combos guide gives more detail on attacks and counters. Check the selected character’s prompts because actions can vary.

Train defense as separate answers to different threats

There is no single defensive response for every attack. Practice guarding, recovery, counters, and evasion as distinct tools, and learn what each costs before relying on it. The Standard-control guard example is to hold R1/RB; adding up or down changes the guard direction for high or low defense.

Directional guard

Hold guard and add the appropriate direction to defend high or low. Use CPU practice to notice whether an attack is aimed high or low instead of holding one direction by habit. Guarding is a deliberate read, not a universal answer to every pressure sequence.

Recovery

Practice recovery as its own response after being hit or knocked away. The aim is to regain control and return to a position where you can defend or move, rather than immediately attempting an attack while still vulnerable. Follow the in-game prompt for your control scheme.

Perception and Super Perception

Perception offers a way to respond to an opponent’s action; Super Perception expands counter options but can consume Ki or Skill Count depending on which counter you use. Learn the prompt and resource cost for the specific response you are attempting so you do not mistake a limited-resource counter for a free guard.

Z-Counters and Super Counters

These counters are timing-based answers rather than substitutes for ordinary guarding. Super Counters require extremely precise timing, so practice them against a predictable attack and focus on the timing window before trying to land one in a chaotic exchange. The official counter guide describes the counter inputs and their costs.

High-Speed Evasion

Use High-Speed Evasion to avoid an incoming attack when the timing and situation allow it. Drill the recognition and timing separately from counter practice: a successful evasion avoids the hit, while a counter attempts to answer it. The game’s control explanation provides the exact input for your chosen scheme.

Combine the mechanics only after isolated practice

Once movement, offense, and defense each feel familiar on their own, use Battle Training’s larger sequences to connect them. The training preview describes a curriculum that combines attacks, Vanishing Assaults, and Sparking mode rather than leaving every lesson as an isolated input.

Ki charging feeds into those choices: spending Ki on movement or counters can affect what remains for later actions. Sparking mode requires at least one Skill Count, according to the training overview. Before attempting a full sequence, check that you have the needed resource, then practice the order of actions without trying to add every possible follow-up at once.

A practical practice order

  1. Set your controls: choose Standard or Classic, check the game’s controls explanation, and account for any remapping.
  2. Learn movement: practice basic movement and Dragon Dash, then add Z-Burst Dash and observe its greater Ki cost.
  3. Isolate offense: practice a Rush Chain, a charged Smash Attack, and a follow-up as separate exercises.
  4. Isolate defense: practice high and low guard, recovery, Perception options, Z-Counters, Super Counters, and High-Speed Evasion against suitable attacks.
  5. Combine a short sequence: connect an approach, an attack, and a follow-up; then add Vanishing Assaults or Sparking mode when you can manage the resource requirements.
  6. Test against a CPU: use opponent practice to apply the skills under pressure; where available, “Guarding After Attacks” can help you practice against a CPU that guards after attacking.

For a literal question such as “How do I enter regular training?”, use the game’s Battle Training option for its structured lessons, or CPU training when you specifically want an opponent. A Steam Community discussion uses that wording, but it is not authoritative menu documentation; follow the labels shown in your installed version.
