The right choice depends on your weight class, build bonuses, temperature protection, stamina and carrying capacity, acquisition route, and whether you are fighting, exploring, gathering, or hauling. Start with the Armorer progression at level 10, move into cultural options when their bonuses fit your character, and compare Epic or perfected pieces at level 60 using the current in-game tooltips. What “best armor” means in Conan Exiles
Armor rating is only one part of a set’s value. A piece with a higher displayed armor number can be a worse choice if it makes you over-encumbered, drains stamina during the activities you perform, lacks the strength or agility bonus your weapons use, or leaves you poorly protected from the heat or cold of your destination. The most useful comparison is the complete package shown in the current client.

Funcom’s progression guidance establishes the broad path: the Armorer feat becomes available at level 10, additional armor archetypes open at 10-level intervals, and the Epic Armors feat becomes available at level 60. Epic Armors also provides Perfected Lining and improved basic armor, while cultural armor can be upgraded to Epic versions with feat points. The exact armor values and bonus distribution can change with balance updates, so inspect every tooltip before spending rare materials.
Choose a set by job, not by reputation
| Use case | First priority | Best direction | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Early progression | Affordable protection and manageable weight | Basic light, medium, or heavy armor from Armorer | Fewer specialized bonuses than later cultural or Epic sets |
| Strength build | Strength or strength-weapon bonuses | A set whose offensive bonus supports your weapon choice, then verify climate coverage | A damage bonus may be worth less if the set causes excessive weight or stamina loss |
| Agility build | Agility or agility-weapon bonuses | Light or medium pieces that preserve mobility and route-appropriate temperature resistance | Lower protection can punish mistakes in prolonged fights |
| Exploration and hauling | Carrying capacity, stamina, and climate resistance | Utility-focused cultural or mixed pieces when their bonuses solve a travel problem | The most useful travel set may not maximize combat damage |
| General PvE | Reliable protection with useful utility bonuses | A heavy all-rounder or another high-protection set that you can sustain comfortably | Weight and stamina costs can make gathering or long-distance travel slower |
| Endgame | The full stat package and upgrade path | Epic cultural armor or perfected basic armor after comparing current tooltips | Feat points and rare materials make experimentation expensive |
Use the table as a starting filter. Once you know the activity, compare individual pieces for armor, weight, strength, agility, weapon damage, stamina, vitality, carrying capacity, and temperature resistance rather than selecting a complete set from its name alone.

Light, medium, and heavy armor explained
Light armor
Light armor is the mobility option. Its lower encumbrance generally makes it easier to travel, reposition, and preserve stamina, which is valuable for agility-focused characters and explorers who spend more time moving than trading blows. It is also a practical first set when your material supply is limited. The cost is a smaller protection margin, so light armor rewards active movement, awareness, and avoiding unnecessary hits. Before committing to a light set, check whether its temperature coverage is adequate for the entire route, not just the area around your base.
Medium armor
Medium armor occupies the compromise position. It gives more protection than light equipment while avoiding some of the weight burden of heavy pieces. This makes it a useful default for characters who fight regularly but still gather, climb, or travel between biomes. Medium armor is especially worth considering when your build needs a specific strength, agility, stamina, or carrying-capacity bonus that is not available on your preferred weight class. Evaluate how the additional weight changes your stamina and encumbrance in the actual loadout, including weapons, tools, and carried resources.
Heavy armor
Heavy armor is the safety-oriented choice for difficult PvE encounters and players who prefer to absorb mistakes rather than rely on constant evasion. Its protection can be valuable against bosses and sustained melee combat, but weight is a real cost: movement, stamina management, and hauling all become more demanding. A heavy set is not automatically the best all-rounder if its bonuses do not support your build or if the climate protection is wrong for your destination. Test the complete equipped load, not an empty character sheet, before crafting every slot.
Armor progression and feat gates
Level 10: unlock Armorer
At level 10, unlock the Armorer feat. It supplies recipes for basic light, medium, and heavy armor, giving you a dependable foundation without requiring a rare dungeon, boss, trader, downloadable-content, or recipe-drop acquisition. Choose the weight class that matches your current stamina and survivability rather than waiting for a perfect named set.
Every 10 levels: expand your options
Funcom’s progression guidance describes additional armor archetypes becoming available every 10 levels. Check the feat screen at each milestone and spend points on recipes that solve your next activity. A new archetype is worth learning when its bonuses, climate resistance, or weight profile addresses a real limitation; collecting every option immediately can leave you short of points for weapons, building, or other progression requirements.

Level 60: Epic Armors and Perfected Lining
At level 60, unlock Epic Armors. This feat provides Perfected Lining and improves basic armor. Epic versions of cultural armor can also be unlocked with feat points. At this stage, compare the complete upgraded package: armor value, weight, offensive and defensive bonuses, stamina, carrying capacity, and heat or cold resistance. Do not assume an Epic label makes every piece superior for every build, and do not copy a pre-Enhanced stat table without checking the current tooltip.

- Reach the gate for the recipe. Confirm your character level and unlock Armorer at level 10. Later archetypes and Epic recipes require the relevant feat and, in some cases, additional feat points.
- Identify the exact recipe. Open the feat or crafting interface and read the recipe name, weight class, required station, ingredients, and any lining requirement. Cultural, Epic, and basic recipes can have different prerequisites.
- Check the current tooltip before farming. The client is the authoritative place for quantities and bonuses after the Enhanced update. Record the materials needed for every slot so you do not gather for a partial set with incompatible pieces.
- Gather materials and stage them near the listed station. Keep enough surplus for repairs and a replacement piece. Enhanced quality-of-life changes allow crafting, repair, and dye actions to use resources in your inventory, from a follower, or from a nearby clan-owned source when the conditions described by the patch notes are met; this can change how you organize a crafting run.
- Craft one test piece first. Equip a single chest, legs, or head piece and inspect the resulting armor, weight, bonuses, and temperature resistance. A test piece exposes an unexpected encumbrance or climate gap before you commit the full material cost.
- Complete the set only after the test passes. Craft the remaining slots, then check the character sheet with your normal weapons, tools, consumables, and carried resources. The practical loadout matters more than the empty armor screen.
- At level 60, compare the upgrade path. Test Perfected Lining and improved basic armor against Epic cultural alternatives. Spend rare materials on the set that improves your actual activity, not merely the piece with the largest armor number.
- Keep a second set for a different climate or role. Store a travel or cold-weather option separately from your combat set when your regular route crosses sharply different environments. Swapping sets is often cheaper than forcing one compromise set to handle every biome.
Match bonuses to your build
Strength and strength weapons
For a strength build, prioritize strength or strength-weapon bonuses, then verify that the set’s weight and temperature profile fit the places where you fight. A small armor advantage is less valuable than a bonus that improves the damage of the weapons you actually carry, but an offensive bonus does not justify a set that leaves you unable to manage stamina. Compare the complete equipped load after adding your preferred weapon and shield.
Agility and agility weapons
Agility builds generally benefit from agility or agility-weapon bonuses and from a weight class that preserves movement. Light armor is the natural starting point, while medium armor can be worthwhile when a specific bonus or extra protection prevents frequent deaths. Check the route’s temperature requirements before choosing the lightest possible pieces; replacing armor halfway through an expedition is disruptive and can erase the weight advantage.
Stamina and vitality
Stamina affects how long you can attack, dodge, climb, sprint, and harvest. Vitality improves the margin for surviving mistakes. If a set offers stamina or vitality, compare that benefit with its weight and armor value instead of treating it as a secondary statistic. A lower-armor set that lets you maintain attacks and evade consistently can outperform a heavier set in mobile encounters, while heavy armor can be preferable when the fight is unavoidable and sustained.
Carrying capacity
Carrying-capacity bonuses are combat-neutral but strategically important for gatherers, builders, and players transporting loot from dangerous areas. They can reduce return trips and prevent an expedition from ending early because of encumbrance. For hauling, compare carrying capacity and stamina before armor rating, then ensure the set still supplies enough temperature resistance for the route and enough protection for the enemies you cannot avoid.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTemperature resistance is a route requirement
Heat and cold resistance determine whether a set works in a particular biome. Treat climate protection as a requirement, not a cosmetic bonus. Before leaving base, identify the hottest and coldest sections of the route, inspect each candidate set’s current tooltip, and carry an alternate set when one outfit cannot cover the entire journey. A combat set with excellent armor but inadequate climate resistance can force emergency clothing changes, drain consumables, or stop an expedition entirely.
When comparing cultural armor, write down the heat and cold coverage alongside offensive and utility bonuses. This prevents a common mistake: selecting a set for strength or agility in the base area and discovering that its temperature profile is unsuitable for the dungeon or resource zone where it will be used.
Recommendations by activity
Early-game survival
Use the basic light, medium, or heavy recipes unlocked through Armorer. Light is appropriate when movement and low encumbrance are your immediate problems; medium is the balanced choice; heavy is safer when you are learning enemy attacks or fighting in cramped spaces. Craft only the pieces you can sustain with your current materials, and upgrade as your level and feat access expand.
General PvE and boss fights
For ordinary PvE, a high-protection set with useful utility bonuses is usually the safer recommendation, provided you can manage its weight. Boss fights reward enough armor and vitality to survive unavoidable hits, but stamina and weapon-damage bonuses still matter because a fight that lasts longer creates more opportunities for mistakes. Bring climate-appropriate pieces and repair supplies rather than assuming the same armor works everywhere.
Exploration and resource runs
Exploration favors carrying capacity, stamina, mobility, and temperature resistance. A specialized travel set can be better than your strongest combat outfit when the main objective is returning with ore, hides, or building materials. Keep one combat set available for hostile encounters and switch before entering the most dangerous area rather than carrying a heavy fighting load for the entire journey.
PvP and defensive play
In PvP, there is no universal weight-class answer. Light armor can support repositioning and stamina management, while medium or heavy armor increases the protection margin when disengagement is impossible. Select bonuses that match your weapon and tactics, then evaluate the full loadout against the climates and terrain where you actually fight. The same set can be excellent for an ambush and inefficient for a prolonged siege, so maintain alternatives when your storage and feat budget allow.
Craftable, cultural, and drop-acquired armor
| Category | How you obtain it | Why choose it | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic light, medium, or heavy | Armorer feat and the station listed by each recipe | Reliable early progression and predictable access | Current material costs, weight, and starter bonuses |
| Cultural armor | Unlock the relevant recipe through feats; Epic versions require Epic Armors access and feat points | Build- or climate-specific bonuses | Whether the bonus package fits your role better than basic or perfected armor |
| Epic and perfected armor | Epic Armors at level 60; Perfected Lining and improved basic armor, plus Epic cultural options | Endgame upgrades and stronger complete packages | Current tooltip, lining requirement, materials, and opportunity cost of feat points |
| Dungeon, boss, trader, DLC, or recipe-drop sets | Activity- or source-specific acquisition | Specialized bonuses or access to a desired cultural style | The actual source, recipe requirement, and whether the set is available in your edition and current version |
One current comparison guide identifies Pride of Aesir as a strong all-rounder candidate and discusses sets with combinations of armor, stamina, carrying capacity, weapon damage, and temperature resistance. Treat those figures as guide data, not permanent specifications: verify the live tooltip after patches and before investing rare resources.

How to compare two sets without misleading yourself
- Normalize the loadout. Compare the same number of armor slots with the same weapons, tools, shield, and carried resources.
- Record weight and armor together. A larger armor number is not automatically better if the extra weight changes your stamina or encumbrance threshold.
- Separate offensive and utility bonuses. Strength, agility, weapon damage, stamina, vitality, and carrying capacity solve different problems; rank them according to the activity.
- Check both temperature directions. Heat resistance does not substitute for cold resistance. Read the full climate information on every candidate.
- Price the acquisition route. A craftable set may be repeatable, while a boss, trader, DLC, or recipe-drop set can require a specific activity or feat investment.
- Test the set in the real scenario. Run a short route or a controlled fight before crafting the remaining pieces. Observe stamina recovery, movement, encumbrance, and temperature effects.
- Recheck after updates. The Enhanced Unreal Engine 5 release changed presentation and quality-of-life behavior, and future patches can change balance. Use current client values whenever a decision involves expensive materials.
Troubleshooting common armor problems
The recipe is not visible
Check your character level, the Armorer or later archetype feat, and whether the recipe is cultural or Epic. At level 60, Epic cultural armor still requires the relevant feat investment; reaching the level alone does not unlock every cultural recipe.
The station will not craft the piece
Read the recipe’s station and ingredient list again, then verify that every required material is available to the crafting interface. Enhanced resource-sharing behavior can include inventory, follower, or nearby clan-owned resources for supported actions, but distance, ownership, or action type can still prevent a source from being counted.
The crafted armor feels worse than the old set
Compare the complete equipped load rather than armor rating alone. The new pieces may have higher protection but impose more weight, reduce stamina flexibility, lose a useful weapon-damage bonus, or provide the wrong temperature resistance. Revert to the older set for the activity where its package performs better.
Best Value
You overheat or freeze during a trip
Inspect heat and cold resistance for every slot and identify the section of the route that causes the problem. Carry a climate-specific alternative, change the set before entering that biome, and avoid assuming that a set that works at base will work at the destination.

You run out of feat points
Prioritize the weight class and bonuses that support your current build, then delay decorative or redundant archetypes. Epic cultural options compete with other level-60 investments, so unlock them only after confirming that their complete package solves a real combat, travel, or carrying problem.
What changed with Conan Exiles Enhanced
Funcom records the Enhanced Unreal Engine 5 release on May 5, 2026. The upgrade includes visual improvements and quality-of-life changes, and official patch notes describe crafting, repair, and dye actions using resources from your inventory, a follower, or a nearby clan-owned source in supported situations. These changes improve convenience, but they do not make old armor tables authoritative. Interface labels, presentation, balance, and individual values should be checked in the client version you are playing.
When a guide, video, or spreadsheet predates Enhanced, use it for broad ideas such as weight-class roles or a set’s acquisition route, then confirm the recipe, station, materials, armor, bonuses, and temperature resistance in-game. This is particularly important for Epic and perfected armor, where a small tooltip change can alter which set is best for your build.
A practical endgame decision process
- Define the job. Write down whether the set is for boss PvE, routine combat, PvP, exploration, gathering, hauling, or a specific biome.
- Set non-negotiables. Choose the minimum temperature coverage, acceptable encumbrance, and required weapon or attribute bonus.
- Shortlist weight classes. Keep light, medium, and heavy options that satisfy those requirements instead of assuming one class is universally correct.
- Compare acquisition cost. Include feat points, rare materials, travel, and repeatability, not just the displayed armor value.
- Craft and test one piece. Confirm the live tooltip and practical behavior before making a complete set.
- Build a rotation. Keep a primary combat set and at least one climate or hauling alternative when your activities span different environments.
- Reassess after patches. Recheck the client after major updates, especially when playing Enhanced or moving between editions.
Final recommendation
For a new character, craft the basic weight class that matches your stamina and survivability, beginning with Armorer at level 10. Strength and agility characters should select bonuses that reinforce their weapons, while explorers and haulers should value carrying capacity, stamina, and climate resistance. At level 60, compare Perfected Lining, improved basic armor, and Epic cultural sets as complete packages. Pride of Aesir is one all-rounder candidate mentioned by current comparison material, but its live tooltip—not an old table—should decide whether it fits your character. The best armor is the set whose weight, bonuses, climate protection, and acquisition cost match the activity you are about to perform.
