This guide explains how to identify a current mod, install and remove Workshop or manual .pak files, set up a matching multiplayer server, and recover from mismatch errors, crashes and outdated mods.

Conan Exiles Enhanced is the Steam PC version rebuilt on Unreal Engine 5. Funcom released it as a free upgrade on May 5, 2026, and listed mod support and a refreshed Mod Dev Kit among the launch features. The practical consequence is that the game can load mods, but a mod made for the previous Unreal Engine 4 build may require work by its author before it functions in Enhanced.
Funcom describes the situation directly: the new version fully supports mods, while some mods need to be upgraded to work with Enhanced. “Upgraded” is more than changing a filename. A creator may have to open the project in the Enhanced toolchain, recook the assets for UE5, and repackage the result as a new Workshop item or updated download.

Legacy and Enhanced are different targets
A Legacy or UE4 label means the item was built for the pre-Enhanced game. It is not proof that the item is unusable, but it is a warning that you should not subscribe and assume it will load. A listing specifically marked Enhanced, UE5 or a current game version is a better starting point. If the author has not stated a target, check the update date and recent comments before putting the mod in a valuable save.
Patch 2.2.0 and Unreal Engine 5.8.2
Patch 2.2.0 moved Enhanced to Unreal Engine 5.8.2. Funcom said modders were notified in advance so they could recook their work. That notification does not guarantee that every author updated on time. After a major engine or game patch, expect a period in which some mods warn, stop loading or cause a crash until their authors publish compatible packages.
Which mods are most likely to work now?
No permanent list of compatible mods exists because Workshop files change independently of the game. Evaluate each item at the time you subscribe rather than relying on an old recommendation or a screenshot from the Legacy era.
Use this compatibility checklist
- Target: Look for “Enhanced,” “UE5” or an explicit current-game version in the description and title.
- Last update: An author update after the current game patch is stronger evidence than a high lifetime subscriber count.
- Dependencies: Install every required framework, library or companion mod and check whether those dependencies are also recooked for UE5.
- Comments: Sort for recent reports. A page can look popular while current users are reporting crashes or a missing dependency.
- Load order: Follow the author’s stated order. Some systems must load before content, balance or patch mods.
- Save impact: Treat building, item, NPC and map changes as potentially persistent. Make a backup before adding or removing them.
- Multiplayer support: Confirm that the author permits server use and that the same files can be installed on the server and every client.
Custom maps need extra caution
Funcom’s May notes treated custom modded maps as future-patch work. A map listing may therefore depend on a particular build, an author-side update or a feature that is not yet stable in Enhanced. Do not move a long-running world to a map mod until the author confirms Enhanced support and you have a restorable save.
Can you use mods on an official server?
No. The Steam Workshop warning says mods can only be used on non-official servers. That excludes official Conan Exiles servers even when a particular Workshop item appears harmless. Use single-player, local co-op, a self-hosted dedicated server or a rented server for modded play.

This restriction applies to the server environment, not merely to the person who subscribed. A client cannot force a Workshop mod onto an official server, and installing a mod locally does not create permission to join one.

Workshop subscription is Funcom’s easiest installation method. The following sequence applies to Steam PC Enhanced.
- Open the Conan Exiles Steam Workshop. Search for the item and open its full page rather than subscribing from a search result.
- Verify the listing. Read the Enhanced/UE5 requirement, current game-version notes, dependencies, load-order instructions and recent comments. Do not proceed if the page only documents the Legacy build unless the author explicitly confirms Enhanced support.
- Select Subscribe. Steam downloads the Workshop item. Let the download finish before launching the game; a large item may take time even when the subscription button changes immediately.
- Launch Enhanced and open the in-game Mods menu. Find the subscribed item in the available-mod list.
- Enable the mod. Move it into the active list and place it in the author’s required load order. If you are adding several items, establish the order before loading the world.
- Restart after a substantial change. Restarting after adding or removing a large set gives the game a clean load and makes it easier to identify the item responsible for a problem.
- Back up the save before entering the world. Keep the backup outside the live save location so a failed load cannot overwrite your only copy.
For multiplayer, perform the same review on the server and client lists. Every player must have the same mod files, versions and order required by the server. A subscription alone does not ensure that the server is running that version.
How to install a mod manually with a .pak file
Manual installation is useful when an author distributes an external package or when a server administrator needs direct file control. Download only from the author’s stated distribution and confirm that the file is intended for Enhanced.
- Close Conan Exiles and Steam’s game process if it is still running.
- Open the game’s installation directory and navigate to
<SteamLibrary>steamappscommonConan ExilesConanSandboxMods. - Place the supplied Enhanced
.pakfile in thatModsfolder. Keep the original filename unless the author’s instructions say otherwise. - Start Enhanced, open the Mods menu and enable the item. Apply the required order.
- Launch a test world or a copy of your save before committing the change to a primary world.
Manual files and Workshop subscriptions can leave duplicate copies of the same mod. If the game behaves differently from the author’s instructions, inspect the folder for an old or duplicated .pak before changing unrelated settings.
Removing a Workshop mod
Return to the item’s Steam Workshop page and choose Unsubscribe. Allow Steam to remove or update the subscribed files, then check the in-game Mods menu. Removing a mod that added items, buildings, characters or recipes can alter a save; keep the backup made before the change.
Removing a manual mod
Close the game, open <SteamLibrary>steamappscommonConan ExilesConanSandboxMods, and remove the relevant .pak file. If you are unsure which file belongs to the mod, move suspected files to a temporary backup folder rather than deleting them permanently. Start the game with the item disabled and test a copy of the save.
How multiplayer mod matching works
A modded server is a shared software state. The server and each joining client need the same mod set and compatible versions; the order must also match when the mod or server requires an ordered list. A client having an extra item, an older package or a different dependency can receive a mod mismatch and be refused entry.
Before starting a session
- Write down the server’s active list in order.
- Give every player the exact Workshop items or
.pakpackages, including dependencies. - Have everyone update before the session, not while the server is already running.
- Restart the server and clients after a large update.
- Do not mix a Legacy client or Legacy server package with Enhanced.
When an author replaces a Workshop file, the server may update at a different time from a client. Pause play until the server administrator confirms that all players are on the same package.

Yes, rented servers are supported through select hosting providers, but Funcom’s FAQ does not name a universal provider list. Confirm the service’s Enhanced/UE5 support before paying or transferring a world. A host that supports the older edition is not automatically suitable for Enhanced.
Server-hosting requirements to verify
- An explicit Conan Exiles Enhanced or UE5 game build, not only a Legacy listing.
- Workshop subscription controls or a documented way to upload and manage
.pakfiles. - A server-side mod-order editor and a way to see the active versions.
- Automatic and manual backups that can be restored without opening a support ticket.
- Controls for matching client and server mod lists.
- Support for the Isle of Siptah DLC and map where your players own and use that content.
Ask the host how it handles a game patch that invalidates a mod. The useful answer is a rollback or backup procedure, not merely an assurance that Workshop items are available.
Isle of Siptah, Exiled Lands and Enhanced server migration
Funcom moved official Isle of Siptah PC server characters to Exiled Lands servers for the Enhanced transition. Enhanced’s supported PC world setup merges Exiled Lands and Isle of Siptah access in the new environment, but Isle of Siptah content still requires ownership of that DLC.
This matters when selecting a map mod or renting a server. Confirm which map the server is running, whether the map mod supports Enhanced, and whether every player owns the required DLC. A map or DLC mismatch is separate from a normal mod-order problem.

Change one variable at a time. The aim is to establish a clean Enhanced launch, then identify the first incompatible item rather than reinstalling everything blindly.
If you receive a mod mismatch when joining
- Compare the server’s list with the client’s list, including order.
- Check that every item is the Enhanced/UE5 release and not a Legacy package.
- Update the game and all listed mods, then restart Steam, the client and the server.
- Remove duplicate manual
.pakfiles fromConanSandboxModsand check for a second copy installed through Workshop. - Have the server administrator rebuild or reapply the active list, then test with one player before inviting the group.
If Enhanced crashes or will not launch
- Disable the most recently added or updated mod and try launching once.
- If the game starts, leave that item disabled and test the remaining set.
- Repeat by re-enabling updated items one at a time until the failure returns.
- Read the item page for a required dependency, a known patch conflict or an author instruction that changes load order.
- If the failure began immediately after a game patch, wait for the author to recook the mod or remove the outdated package before troubleshooting the base game.
If a world loads with missing content
Stop and restore the pre-change save if the world contains important builds or characters. Verify that every content mod is enabled and in its required order. Removing a mod that supplied placed objects or recipes can leave a save in a different state, so do not repeatedly load and save while experimenting.

When a Legacy mod is the suspected cause
Do not assume a warning can be ignored. Disable the Legacy item, launch Enhanced, and check whether the author has published an upgraded, recooked and repackaged version. If no such version exists, the practical choices are to leave it out, keep a separate Legacy installation and save where possible, or wait for the author; forcing an old package can damage a modded world.
How to manage a large mod list safely
Keep a written inventory
Record each item’s Workshop name, author, current update date, dependencies, order position and whether it changes maps, buildings, inventories or progression. The record makes it possible to reconstruct a server after a reinstall and identify what changed after a patch.
Use staged updates
Update a small group, start a copy of the world, and verify loading, crafting, placed structures and travel before updating the next group. For a dedicated server, test the updated list privately before opening it to the full player group.
Protect saves before structural changes
Back up before adding, removing or replacing a major mod, before a game patch, and before changing a map. Label backups with the date and mod-list version. Keep at least one backup that has not been opened by the new configuration.
How to compare two mods that do the same job
Popularity alone is a poor compatibility test. Use the same questions for both candidates:

Prefer the candidate with clear current-version support and a manageable dependency chain, even if another item has more subscribers.
What to expect after future patches
Every game or engine update can change the conditions a mod was built against. Enhanced’s move to UE5.8.2 illustrates why a previously working package may need a new cook. After a patch, update the base game first, then inspect every mod page before launching the primary save. If an item warns or fails, disable it, test the unmodded or reduced list, and wait for an Enhanced recook rather than treating the warning as harmless.
The safest long-term setup is a current Enhanced package, documented dependencies, a deliberate load order, matching server and client files, and a backup made before each substantial change.
